Don King Presents: Prizefighter is apparently "the most realistic boxing video game simulation," according to 2K Sports. "This in-depth, documentary-style title will provide the deepest, most authentic and entertaining experience ever seen in a boxing video game."

Prizefighter is currently in development at Venom Games for Xbox 360, Wii and DS - behind Rocky Legends and, technically, Rocky (Venom Games boasts ex-Rage staffers in its ranks). The game is slated for a spring 2008 release.

According to first details on the game, players (in addition to punching faces) will establish a boxing career by training and promoting themselves. Ultimately the goal is to win and defend the title belt while a central storyline knits things together (so we’re told).

We’re not sure if legendary boxing promoter Don King is involved beyond his name being used in the title, but he has offered this quote on the game:

"In all my years working in professional boxing, I have never seen anything come as close to recreating the thrill, the intensity, the courage and the spectacle of the sport.

"Don King Presents: Prizefighter is more than a game - it is a glimpse at what life is like in and out of the ring for these incredible athletes."

EDGE REVIEW

Hopes were high for this one: Venom, developer of the decent enough Rocky games; a wealth of documentary footage from boxing legends (and Don King); and the promise of a career mode more complete than any seen thus far. There was even, in good old boxing tradition, a bit of lip aimed at the competition by the game’s producer: Fight Night Round 3 is apparently “mostly just beautiful, and that’s about it”.

So, the tale of the tape. The documentary footage is diverting enough, but doesn’t present a coherent story – often simply hinting at events which the game doesn’t fill in, such as the early rivalry with Jesus Silva. The career mode is lightweight: pick your next fight, then choose whether to play two minigames to boost your stats, or sacrifice one for a media engagement which gives you more fans, and hence more adrenaline, when you’re in the ring.

It’s here that Prizefighter falls flat. The in-ring fighting has problems that are simply fundamental for a boxing game. Never mind the sluggish movement, repetitive phrases from trainers, or ability to trap the AI in combination patterns: at the most basic level, Prizefighter has suspicious collision detection and a great many gloves that clip through arms and heads. Given that a boxing game’s focus should be getting the confluence of two upper bodies right before all else, it’s unforgivably lax, and renders pointless any of the video footage or other dressing around it.

Verdict: 4/10

You know, the Rocky games weren't that bad. The last (and best) being Rocky: Legends. The license helped it along (soundtrack, characters and locations especially) but the core gameplay was quite bearable on the older consoles. Needless to say, the competition is much tougher now.
