Mercenaries 2: World in Flames™ is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world. A power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a warzone.

But for you, international crisis is all upside: You are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. Mercenaries 2™ features a slew of potential clients, all willing to pay you to do their dirty work. Dirty deeds, done for exorbitant fees. These are world powers with deep pockets, deep grudges, and enough arms and ammo to start World War III. This is your kind of environment.

Mercenaries 2™ features the latest and most dangerous in civilian and military tech, everything from shiny new sports cars, to the future-tech satellite-guided bunker-busting mini-nuke. Tanks, APCs, boats, luxury automobiles – you name it, you can have it delivered to you in real time. And if you run out of cash you can always 'acquire' the gear you need in the field.

If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or blow the living crap out of it. Play your own way, or play with the help of a friend in the new cooperative multiplayer mode.

You are not a soldier. You don't have to play by anyone's rules. You have your own code: you will fulfill the terms of the contract, no matter what. Not everyone in the world of Mercenaries is as honorable. Everyone will try and screw you, given the chance. They think they can get away with it, because they don't know rule #1: EVERYBODY PAYS.

Key features:

* Cooperative Multiplayer!

Play the main Mercenaries 2 campaign with the help of your friends. Jump in and out of a game at any time!

* Enhanced Destruction!

Bring buildings teaming with enemy soldiers down section by section, topple an overpass with C4 to stop an oncoming enemy vehicular assault, fire off an RPG at a balcony and watch as it crashes on unsuspecting enemies below – in Mercenaries 2, destruction isn't just cool to look at, you can use it to your advantage!

* A massive, reactive, and completely unscripted game world!

The world of Mercenaries 2 is larger than all of the maps of the previous Mercenaries combined and is jam-packed full of colorful characters and environments.

* Build your own Private Military Company!

Increase and customize your support options by recruiting other mercenaries you meet in the game!

* A Mercenaries' Paradise!

Each faction has plenty of work for you, from small pick-up jobs to elaborate, multi-objective missions. The world of Mercenaries 2 offers over one hundred unique tasks you can take on – if you're interested.

* Tired of driving?

Take over landing zones in the world and instantly travel from place to place!

* If you can't beat them, steal from them!

Don't want to pay for a Bunker Buster? No problem – every faction has tons of fuel and munitions just waiting for the "resourceful" mercenary to acquire. Just make sure that Bunker Buster doesn't blow up when you start getting shot at!

* No Deadly Water!

Don't worry about drowning ever again: use watercraft or swim to traverse the oceans, rivers and lakes of Mercenaries 2.

* Cool new toys!

Dozens of weapons, vehicles and support options are available for to use to blow the crap out of everything! Use the new grappling hook to latch on to flying vehicles and commandeer them in the sky!

* Work for the highest bidder!

Clients will offer you money, information and other resources in exchange for your services, provided you haven't done anything to piss them off!

Game Info

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is the upcoming sequel to 2005's Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, due for release in the US on August 31, 2008 and in Europe on September 5, 2008, as confirmed by the official website.

Features new to Mercenaries 2 include destructible environments, co-operative mode[3], a fire effects engine that allows the player to ignite things such as oil or foliage, improved artificial intelligence for non-player characters and the ability to swim. The game is powered by the Havok 4.5 physics engine.

New vehicles have been added, an example of this is boats.[4] Hijacking now consists of a small minigame, ranking in difficulty relative to the vehicle being hijacked. Another feature is the ability to switch from driver to gunner on demand. One other new addition to this iteration of Mercenaries is the ability to build a Private Military Company and recruit mercenaries into it. There are two confirmed mercenaries that can be recruited: Eva Navarro who will act as a mechanic once recruited and Ewan who is a helicopter pilot who can pick up valuable objects you may encounter, and can also extract you if necessary.

The game will feature terrain ranging from urban environments such as Caracas, to the Amazon rainforest. It will also include the cities and regions of Maracaibo, Cumaná, Mérida, Ciudad Guayana, Guanare, the Orinoco River, Lake Maracaibo, the Northern Andes, Isla de Margarita, and more.

Mercenaries 2: From the Beginning

Impressions of the explosive first mission.

It's been almost a year since we last saw Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. In that time, Pandemic Studios has been working to smooth out the framerate and tweak the game so that it's superior in every way to the original. We got a chance to once again get our hands on Mercs 2, taking it from the beginning and shooting our way through the first mission.

When the game begins, you select one of three characters -- Mattais Nilsson, Chris Jacobs or Jennifer Mui. I went with Jen, because, well, she's a lot cuter than Mattais or Chris. Though the missions remain the same no matter which character you choose, each has their own preferences in weaponry. Jen isn't a powerhouse like Chris or a maverick like Mattais. She's more about speed and stealth. But in the first level, she displayed none of these tendencies -- that's because she starts off with an assault rifle and a grenade launcher.

You're hired by a Venezuelan businessman named Solano to free General Carmona, who was recently arrested during a military coup. The mission is fairly easy, just something to get you into the game and familiar with the controls. After landing on the beach, Jen gets a few weapons and is thrown into a series of small frays with some trigger-happy enemies. They prove easy to dispatch, especially with the grenade launcher. Explosions are Pandemic's gift to gamers. Enemies fly as if shot out of a cannon, the jungle catches on fire, buildings crumble. The first mission is ten minutes of things going boom.

After killing a few baddies, you are faced with a seemingly impenetrable gate. Good thing you can call in a satellite-guided bomb. Target the gate blocking your way and a mini-game appears. You're shown a radar screen broken into six quadrants. As the radar sweeps through the grey quadrants, hit the corresponding button to lock in the location. Then step back and look to the skies as a chunky bomb drops and obliterates the obstruction. Jen's face is awash in the yellow glow of the explosion. It's a thing of beauty.

Shortly after this, you receive an air-dropped jeep. You have the option to go on foot and fight more troops or you can take the jeep and swerve around some roadblocks. Eventually you reach another gate which must be destroyed. You won't need the jeep anymore, because a tank is being dropped down. This is where things get good.

The tank is a beast and rolls right through a hillside shanty town. Though the tank is appropriately slow, enemy attacks have no hope of penetrating its armor. This isn't really a challenge, just a chance to embrace the destructive power of a tank. It's a great way to kick off a game, giving you a taste of what the next dozen hours have in store for you.

Things end with a small skirmish where you rescue General Carmona. Once he's safe, it's on to a cut-scene in which Jen is betrayed by Solano and shot in the a*s. The betrayal is bad enough, but the bullet to the a*s is what breaks the camel's back. Jen vows vengeance on Carmona and Solano. And so begins the full game.

The extra development time has served Mercs 2 well. The framerate, which was a serious concern a year ago, is fairly smooth at this point and the visuals have been given an extra kick. The only issue that has me worried is the AI. It's not on par with the rest of the package. Fortunately, Mercenaries 2 still has a couple of months of development time. Right now, Mercs 2 is looking like a strong successor to one of the better games from the last generation.

Along with Dead Space and Mirror's Edge, EA is heavily banking on this at E3.
