Wet

At a recent Sierra Entertainment event, we had a chance to take an early look at a new title that breaks new ground by featuring a scantily clad heroine who enjoys spending her time capping baddies and leaping around like some sort of sensual little monkey. Wait, someone’s done that before? Lara who? Hmmmm. Well, while A2M’s Wet (get your minds out of the gutter, A2M stands for Artificial Mind and Movement) may not be the most innovative title in the publisher’s pipeline, it certainly looks like it’ll be a lot of fun to play. Combining gunplay, acrobatics, and swordplay, the game looks to improve on the tried-and-true formula originally made popular by the Tomb Raider titles.

Wet serves as the coming-out party for Ruby, the latest in a long line of lithe, sexy video-game heroines. Like her contemporaries Lara Croft and BloodRayne, Ruby is much more than just a pretty face (and/or hot body). While we don’t know much about the game’s storyline yet, we do know that she “solves problems,” usually with some sort of weaponry. This probably means that we’ll be seeing assassination missions and the like, although we’re hopeful that Wet will offer something in the way of a storyline. Double-crosses and shady deals are usually par for the course for these types of games, so we expect that Ruby will get set-up or screwed over by an unscrupulous employer at some point. As long as the story ties the elaborate action sequences together nicely, we’re there.

Feel the pain!

The game’s combat is comprised primarily of gun and swordplay, as Ruby will be able to deal death in a variety of manners. During the sequences that we saw, she wielded two pistols simultaneously, which allowed her to target multiple enemies at once. While the controls are far from final, we were told that the right bumper was being used to target foes, with the X button acting a virtual trigger. If you’ve got two enemies gunning for you, just flick the right analog stick toward the untargeted one and your aiming reticule will be split between them. As for the sword, well, we’re not really sure how exactly that work, but it sure looked like a lot of fun. It appears that Ruby will be able to perform predetermined finishing moves, including a nasty little number that the developers jokingly call “the taintsplitter.” We’ll leave it to you guys to figure out what that is.

When you’re not busy gunning down roomfuls of enemies, you’ll probably be spending time swinging from the rafters or leaping from one platform to the next. The acrobatics in Wet are strikingly similar to those seen in games like Prince of Persia, and we definitely wouldn’t say that that’s a bad thing. Ruby’s leaping and flipping animations look fluid and graceful, and she’ll be able to fire her weapons while in mid-air. There a few nice touches here and there, from the ability to slide down a ladder while hanging upside down (shooting enemies while you do) or running along a wall (while slashing foes with your sword). It looks like the game will have some environmental puzzles, too, as we saw one in which Ruby had to shoot a switch while in mid-leap from one pole to the next.

Although it’s still pretty early in the development process, it appears that Wet will be a pretty good-looking game. We were actually most impressed with the menus, loading screens and cinematics, as all of them feature some very interesting design aesthetics. Faux-grainy film stock gave the cinematics a funky look, and we can’t even begin to describe the visual style of the menus. We don’t know if this stuff will make it into the final game, but we sure hope it does. The character model looks pretty nice, too, and it’s quite obvious that the development team will be heavily focused on making sure she moves smoothly. The only environments we saw were for testing purposes, so we can’t really make any judgments on them yet, and the same can be said for the audio.

It would be very easy for us to compare Wet to the Tomb Raider series, as both feature sexy heroines that are as dangerous as they are sexy. However, it looks like Wet will kick things up a notch (BAM!) by introducing swordplay to the formula, as well as creating a unique visual style that’s impossible not to like. Again, it’s still early in its construction, so we’re excited to see if A2M can breathe new life into the sub-genre. Keep your eyes peeled for more coverage over the coming year!

The Demo is out on UK PSN, and its all kinds of fun!! Played it twice already. Although I didnt find the controls all that smooth (specially the movement) - something similar to Bourne since it is the same engine.

On the good side - the music score and the girl - total badass!! The game's got an awesome grindhouse feel to it. Can't go wrong with that. ever.

Oh, and the end level of the demo is the best part :nerves:

i just completed....and it was f**king awsome ....clearly exceeded the expectations... though the graphics were nowhere in the league of uncharted and killzone but the gameplay was good. i doubt it will become repetative overtime but the demo was great .music is good ... and babes with guns are always good :fulltite:

the last sequence of the game was the best part .. i hope the game is made up of many such sequences ...
