OVERALL WINNER:

While you can argue all day about which the better console is, when it comes to customer support in India, Xbox 360 vs PlayStation 3 is a no contest. With a 3-year warranty, quick turnaround time, and hassle-free replacements, the Xbox 360 sets the standard for after sales support for consoles in India, and even manages better turnaround times than bigger Western markets. Support for the PlayStation 3, on the other hand, is abysmal. Long turnaround times and clueless support executives make getting the console replaced a harrowing experience. So if you’re equally drawn to the features and software offerings of both consoles and feel that after-sales support is important to you, the Xbox 360 is the clear winner here.

WHERE THEY NEED TO IMPROVE

Taking the above service and support situation for both consoles into consideration, here’s where we think both Sony and Microsoft need to up their game.

Xbox 360

  • Replacement consoles – Giving refurbished consoles as replacement is a global company policy, so that’s probably not going to change. But Microsoft India should consider replacing failure-prone Core and Pro consoles with the new, more reliable Arcade consoles. This would greatly reduce the number of consoles they get for replacement, so everyone’s happy.
  • Post-warranty support – The fact that Microsoft India is looking at some sort of post-warranty support is a positive sign. But whether or not they deliver on it we’ll know only in October, once the first batch of Xbox 360s runs out of warranty. A paid extended warranty would be great.

PlayStation 3

  • Turnaround time – Taking a month to replace a PS3 is ridiculous, especially when the company is promising replacements within 7-10 days. Turnaround time needs to come down drastically.
  • Quality of customer support – Customer support executives are clueless about the PS3, and they’re often unable to provide the customer an accurate status for his query. The entire replacement process has to be simpler and streamlined.
  • Post-warranty support – A paid extended warranty option should be explored, because not everyone can justify paying Rs 12,500 for a PS3 just a year after paying Rs 25,000 for one.

    I have owned both consoles and both have needed repairs at one time or another. While my Xbox 360 broke twice it took about 10-12 days to get it back and about the same for the Ps3 no where near a month. Second the three year warranty on the 360 ONLY covers the RRoD and the new E74 (or whatever its called) problems… So if you call Microsoft 1 year and day after you purchased your 360 for any other problem it will be an out of pocket repair… Oh and Sony does NOT give brand new consoles i can say that from experience.

    * Reviewer is XBOX fan
    * MS is offering 3 yaer warranty as they knew XBOX is error-prone, RROD & other issues are frequent in XBOX (similar to BSOD in Win 98)
    * Sony product is a sony product & it will not behave abruptly, whetehr its DVD player, TV, amera or PS3.

    I don’t own any of XBOX 360 or PS3, but I am planning to own one (probably PS3) as I own PS2 (pirated :-) ) & found know issues with it & also MGS series is only for PS3 only. I have also gone to many user forums & websites which shows how XBOX doesn’t live to users expection.

    5. Pay for playing on live(i agree) tell me if 1 Indian is playing Gears or Halo 3 without delay or lagg. I’m using airtel 1mbps home and its got amazing dl and upload speed and it laggs.
    6.Xbox360 wireless adapter = 3000 buck wow!!! i will get Wireless – N router with dongle for that cost. I did a very big mistake trusting on 360′s line-up which made me buy a 360 and that will never happen again!

    I love the 360 for its games and interface also the controller but quality wise and support [0]

Go out of India and look elsewhere. Europe and America they replace it in a week max. UK they have a next day replacement policy.

I still think library-wise and actual game support wise your going to get a second-rate support from third party developers on MS games but, once again, as mentioned before thats not MS’s problem.

    Sony better pick up its pace because MS was far behind when the console war started and if your not targeting countries with larger gamer bases then your going to lose out in sales and eventually the fight ends up getting lost too.

    I feel that all this blog is about the warranty and less about the console and games. First off, you should compare statistics from PS3 to 360. Would you take a console that is a ticking time-bomb or would you rather get a console with only 1% chance of having a factory defect since that’s what all the PS3 is.
