Zelda: Skyward Sword, Gears 3 to Each Sell 10 Million This Holiday

This upcoming holiday season is going to be absolutely jam packed with triple-A titles, but the sad fact for game publishers is that most consumers don't have extra bundles of cash just sitting under their sofas. Consumers will choose carefully and some really top notch games might not sell as well as they should... at least not in the immediate launch window. So who will be the big winners?

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter shared with us his list of forecasted top five sellers for the holiday: Call of Duty Modern: Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Gears of War 3, and FIFA 12.

He's anticipating that Zelda and Gears each sell about 10 million (that should make Cliff Bleszinski very happy) while EA's FIFA takes fifth place with about 7 million sold, but highly anticipated games like Bethesda's Skyrim or Rocksteady's next Batman won't do well enough to make the top five.

"The only other game I could see selling numbers similar to FIFA is Need for Speed The Run. I don't see Elder Scrolls V Skyrim or Batman Arkham City selling 7 million, although it's possible for either," he said.

Pretty much everyone in the business expects Modern Warfare 3 to top all software again, and Pachter believes it'll sell 20 million units, while EA's shooter BF3 should do better than some are expecting to grab second.

PS3, Xbox 360 sales "neck and neck"

Games industry analysts believe the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 are approaching similar global sales.

55 million Xbox 360 units have been sold, putting Microsoft's console just five million units ahead of the PlayStation 3.

The Xbox 360, which launched a year before the PlayStation 3, has been buoyed by the success of ten million-selling motion-sensing add-on Kinect.

But, according to EEDAR's Jesse Divnich, for the first six months of 2011 the PlayStation 3 sold ten per cent more than the Xbox 360 worldwide.

"If one looks at the total amount of sales through the first six months of 2011, the PlayStation 3 has sold about ten per cent more than the Xbox 360, worldwide, so the PlayStation 3 is definitely gaining ground," Divnich told IndustryGamers.

"The Xbox 360 does have a five per cent lead over the PlayStation 3 worldwide, a minimal difference," Divnich continued.

"We do know based on our consumer surveys that the replacement rate among Xbox 360s are slightly higher than the PlayStation 3 (the Nintendo DS is the highest, as it is expected for portable electronics). The PlayStation 3 was a tad bit more technologically future proof from the start compared to the Xbox 360.

Fifa 11 - 15 million. HOLY sh*t. :surprise:

Didnt the last one sell 10+ million as well? It just keeps on trucking. Decent numbers for DS2. It was never gonna be a HUGE hit, I think 2 Mill is about they would have expected as well.

@kaysee. It was a showcase for the Cryengine 3, and they had to show how well it scales on the consoles. I think they will be satisfied with 3 million.
