Microsoft hiring 'next generation' Xbox developers

Software giant looking for hardware engineers to work on console "from conception through implementation"; one position mentions "future platforms."

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6302784.html

Historically, a console life cycle has usually lasted about five to six years. So, with the Xbox 360 getting set to celebrate its sixth birthday this November, it shouldn't be a surprise that Microsoft is laying the groundwork for its next move in the gaming hardware market.

According to several job postings on LinkedIn, Microsoft is forming a team "responsible for defining and delivering next generation console architectures from conception through implementation." Currently, the company's Interactive Entertainment Business is hiring an Audio/Video Hardware Architect, Audio Architect, and a Graphics Architect for positions with descriptions that contain the aforementioned language.

Another position, for Wireless DV Engineer, will play "a key role in the development and verification of the Xbox and future platforms." (Emphasis added.) The Xbox division is also hiring a Design Verification Engineer and a Senior Hardware Verification Engineer.

Microsoft's original Xbox model came out in November 2005 and was beset with hardware failures that ended up costing the company in excess of $1 billion due to warranty extensions. The problems were largely remedied with newer chipsets, with the whole console undergoing a redesign that resulted in 2010's slimline Xbox 360 S. That model is the one currently on the market in both 4GB and 250GB configurations.

This gen seems to be going on and on and on with no end in sight. We havent even heard of the next gen consoles yet and it will take them a year or so to get them out once they are announced. :(

really? this gen still seems like it hasen't hit it's stride :fear: but that could be just me.....Could we just consider games like UC2 and Gears 2, coupled with a KZ and a few more shooters as the pinnacle? If yes, then this gen is :(

@arch: it should be Sony....they were the real ones to taste the bitter feeling of being late. Nintendo will obviously introduce something jazzy enough for the public to lap it up

That's a good thing. The longer the life cycle, the more money everyone makes, and the less we have to pay for hardware.

Microsoft better be hiring a good hardware QA team to make sure they don't put out crap hardware.

Don't think so.

360 slim 250gb will hit 150/200$, PS3 will hit 200/250$ soon. So that will increase the install base of both consoles by 40 million or so, then they will announce the next gen consoles.

Nintendo will announce it next year, they will pimp 3DS this year, so yeah ...

^ I believe M$ would play the PS2/PS3 scenario with the xbox360/successor. They can always lower the price and at $150 the 360 will make a fantastic buy. In the meantime they can always roll out a new console. They really need to. The 360 is getting whacked in a corner when it comes to good games now :(

Oh yeah where would we be without all those sequels that have 3 at the end of them and look pretty much exactly similar to their prequels with maybe one or two added effects and absolutely no changes in core gameplay.

That alone makes extending this gen for another 3-4 years worth it. If we are lucky we can have Gears/UC/whatever number 4 and 5 and maybe even 6 this gen itself on the same engine.

O.o

And as far as developers making money is concerned you make it sound like everyone was losing money up until the last 2 years. I am sure they will do fine. Its not like this is the first time new consoles are coming out. Its been the same for 25 years.

New hardware means devs spend a lot of time and money developing engines and other tech to develop for that hardware. Lets not forget all the crap games that come out in the first couple of years in most console life cycles. Gears of War was the Xbox 360's first killer app and it came 1.5 years after the console launched. As the specs get higher, that number of crap games earlier on is only going to go up.

And what makes you think launch titles for the next Xbox won't be Gears, Halo and Forza? New hardware doesn't mean new game IP. Or is just the same games with better graphics enough to justify a new console?

WHOA ! you got to play castlevania....that game is superbly presented in both art form and graphics wise...if developers churn out lazy sequels with just one added effect it is not the hardware fault.....also look at ff13...it looked spectacular......they come under pressure to release game soon to meet markets demands instead of working more on it taking their time.....new hardware also wont make much difference if the developers have same attitude....

Yeah..as many have said, the longer a gen lasts the better it is for everybody. I believe we still haven't seen the best this gen has to offer.

On another note..a small insignificant nitpic; this November it would the 360's sixth anniversary, not birthday.

They have to meet market/publisher demands. That is largely how the gaming industry works. Very few devs have a staunch support to say "When it's done" instead of a release date. Look at IW :fear: It is probably less about the attitude of the devs themselves
