Borderlands 2 bosses ‘bigger and better’

Borderlands 2 will feature ‘bigger, better’ bosses than those that appeared in the first game, developer Gearbox boasted over the Christmas period.

Lead writer Anthony Burch and lead designer Jon Hemingway explained that experimenting with DLC for the first game left the studio with a much better idea of how to refine their first-person action-RPG experience.

So: “In Borderlands 2 the combat is much more focused on target prioritisation and strategy and trying to figure out what is the best way to take this guy down,” Burch said. “What’s the best order of things I should do? How should my teammates, my co-op buddies help me out?”

Meet the Siren

Gearbox details the revamped siren class in its shoot and loot sequel.

The phaselock ability is the first earned in the Siren's skill tree, allowing her to bind an enemy from range in a kind of energy bubble

First, it takes an enemy out of a fight, providing a degree of crowd control.

Second, it locks the enemy in place, useful for turning fast-moving creatures into easy targets.

She's got support trees so she's also kind of a mystical healer and she uses her ability to grant health bonuses to herself as well as the team.

She can use her phaselock ability to revive another player, so you don't even have to be near somebody to get them up

She'll also be able to deal out plenty of direct damage by investing skill points in the Cataclysm tree.

She has a skill called Helios, and when a target gets phaselocked you get a huge aoe explosion and targets in that radius can get set on fire.

Meet Borderlands 2's Gunzerker

Shoot guns in style.

The Gunzerker, can temporarily wield two guns at once.

With the skill Yippe Ki Yay, "while you're gunzerking [dual-wielding], any time you kill an enemy it increases the duration of gunzerking. A really large encounter with lots of enemies becomes exciting. You immediately enter your gunzerking mode and every time you kill them you get bigger and stronger and badder and just completely go on a rampage throughout the fight.

There's also the Brawn skill tree, where you can learn the Come at Me, Bro skill. With this, "while gunzerking you can let out a taunt and get enemies to focus on you," said Hemingway. "But then for the next several seconds you get a ton of damage reduction. But also the moment you taunt you instantly go to full health -- and so it's actually fantastic.

The third skill tree is called Gun Lust, which according to Burch is "all about just doing crazy or interesting things with guns. There's one skill called No Kill Like Overkill and anytime you kill an enemy, any excessive amount of damage you dealt is converted into health for you.

A skill called Double Your Fun ties into the grenade system. "If you throw a grenade while gunzerking you actually end up throwing two grenades, but the second grenade doesn't cost you ammo.
