This is the announcement you've been waiting for: One of the most beloved strategy titles of all time re-imagined by one of the best strategy studios in the world. Firaxis Games' XCOM: Enemy Unknown introduces a wider console audience to what made the storied franchise great in the first place.

Unlike 2K Marin's previously announced XCOM shooter, which sparked tempers among longtime fans for turning its back on the series' cerebral roots, this title is a full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force. XCOM's leader needs a worldwide perspective where threats are identified, populations reassured, and national leaders mollified – but a tactical mind is just as critical considering every shot XCOM's soldiers fire on the battlefield is under the player's turn-based control.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

I think there's already a thread for this.

That's the FPS title being developed by 2K Marin. This however is true to the XCOM series.

BTW the XCOM bundle is going really cheap on Steam atm...

XCOM: Enemy Unknown features both real time and turn based elements

Answering questions triggered by its surprise cover reveal, GameInformer reports the turn-based combat is quite faithful to the original XCOM games – although squad members have different statistics, so old hands will have to learn new tricks.

Talk of real-time elements refers to a global strategic view. Players can research alien technologies, manufacture equipment, wrangle finding from world governments, send jets to take down UFOs, recruit and train squad members, and trigger missions by dispatching squads.

Enemy Unknown’s plot takes place in the same canon as 2K Marin’s shooter XCOM, but at a much later date.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be a really challenging game; not impossibly difficult or frustrating

In a recent interview with VentureBeat, Jake Solomon, lead designer for Firaxis Games’ XCOM: Enemy Unknown, said that their upcoming remake of the legendary XCOM game will be a really challenging game. Jake wanted to differentiate this term and said that it would not be impossibly difficult or tedious to play, just challenging in so many other ways

When asked whether Firaxis could avoid the pitfall of making their game tedious to play, Jake said:

“We have a game that openly embraces the idea of challenge as a selling point, and I think you see a lot of games doing that now. And obviously we can manage that aspect through the different difficulty levels.”

Jake concluded that the world of XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be a living battlefield:

“It’s not the sort of thing where you’re going to find yourself wandering in the dark, and you’re just in the wrong corner. It’s a living battlefield.”

XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s PC Version is Getting Extra Special Attention

That's good news for PC gamers, and it won't stop there. In addition to the PC version of the game getting its own user interface optimized for keyboard-and-mouse gaming, XCOM: Enemy Unknown also will be modder-friendly, though Solomon can't commit to what that means exactly right now.
