Activision Patents Matchmaking That Encourages Players To Buy Microtransactions

Quote

Systems such as loot boxes already use various tricks to encourage players to drop cash, so it’s not surprising that game publishers would want to find more underhanded ways to get those wallets open.

Quote

“For example, if the player purchased a particular weapon, the microtransaction engine may match the player in a gameplay session in which the particular weapon is highly effective,” the text of the patent reads. “This may encourage the player to make future purchases to achieve similar gameplay results.”

Quote

“For example, microtransaction engine 128 may identify a junior player to match with a marquee player based on a player profile of the junior player. In a particular example, the junior player may wish to become an expert sniper in a game...Microtransaction engine 128 may match the junior player with a player that is a highly skilled sniper in the game. In this manner, the junior player may be encouraged to make game-related purchases such as a rifle or other item used by the highly skilled sniper.”

Some lucky players got their hands on early copies of Call of Duty: WWII only to find out that they weren’t able to play the first-person shooter. While clearly it’s normal for multiplayer offerings to not be playable before a game launches, it did raise some red flags that the campaign wasn’t playable. It’s now been enabled, however, thanks to a 9GB Call of Duty: WWII update 1.02.

The hefty update makes it so that the game’s campaign mode works. So, if you purchase a copy of Sledgehammer Games’ first-person shooter when it releases on Friday, November 3, you’ll have to download the 9GB update before you can jump into the game. While it’s definitely an inconvenience, there have certainly been larger day-one patches in the past. It really just signals how the gaming world is constantly changing, and is vastly different than even a decade ago.

Review

  • Connectivity aside, you’re treated to a surprisingly fun campaign that has some interesting deviations from your standard Call of Duty fare.
  • Call of Duty: World War 2 may not have the flair of Infinite Warfare’s many gadgets, but it does a fantastic job in lending a sense of strategy to the proceedings depending on whom you’re paired up with in the game’s eight hour campaign spread across ten missions.
  • The plot of Call of Duty: World War 2 isn’t as subversive as Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, but it does more than enough to keep you invested in the characters thanks to witty dialogue and great voice acting.
  • All in all, Call of Duty: World War 2 plays like the series’ early hits. By no means is this a bad thing, though the overall formula and package is wearing thin. There are some bright moments in single-player campaign marred by arbitrary stutter and Zombies is always a blast (provided you have friends along for the ride).
  • We noticed minor stutter in this (SP) mode alone
  • It requires a mandatory download of almost 10GB before you can play

Rating: 7/10.
