I recently bought PS4 and looking the best arcade racing game right now. My mind was pretty much made up for Payback. I was even gonna pick it up on the launch date. But after watching the reviews, I'm in a dilemma. I think I may go for Rivals instead because I've played it.

Payback: I'm not sure why it got such bad reviews. Reviewers are trashing it for MT and a cheesy storyline. They don't talk much about anything else. I can live with the grinding and bad cutscenes (if they are skippable) as long as the gameplay is enjoyable.

Rivals: It's got great reviews. Plus, it's much cheaper than Payback. I don't see any downside.

If we leave out MT and bad acting from Payback, which game offers a better experience Payback or Rivals? Or is there any other arcade racing game I should go for?

Don't buy NFS 2015. Payback - there is no grind unless you want everything. Every car and every customization. If you don't want that, then you can simply pick it up, complete main events, upgrade your car after each race and buy one later.

You are given a car for each category which is pretty useful for more than 50% of the game. By then, you will have enough credits to buy a new car. You can also search derelicts and build a car in any of the categories and save credits. Apart from that, you can also win shipments which give you credits/tokens/customization, etc.

Hardly any grind.

As for the story and cut-scenes, you can skip if you want. They are nothing special. Reviewers didn't even play the game. 53ef62a.png

It's easily the best arcade racing game on PS4 you can get at the moment. Plays very much like CREW.

New patch live.

Size: 4.9 GB

  • Something we’ve heard loud and clear is that it’s often too time consuming to upgrade multiple cars. We agree, and as a result this is something we’ve been tackling over the previous weeks, and will continue to act upon. We’ve already started this process and have made several server-side tweaks. The first of which was decreasing the amount of time for parts within the tune-up shops to refresh. This is now down from 30minutes to just 10minutes.
  • There’s also been changes to the way events, bait crates and roaming racers work. Completing any of these tasks will now grant you more in-game bank as well as more REP. The increase in winnings will allow you to purchase more cars, as well as parts. The increase in REP will have a side effect of awarding you more shipments, which in turn will lead to more bank, more part tokens and more vanity items.
  • Players in Ranked Speedlists will also notice an increased amount of parts being paid out. Win the Speedlist and you’re guaranteed a new part. We've also increased the frequency in which they are rewarded for simply playing in Speedlists.
  • We believe that owning a garage of customized cars is part of the essence that makes Need for Speed what it is. We’ll keep making tweaks, based on your feedback, and we’re committed to making car progression a much more enjoyable experience.

The Changes

  • Decreased the time it takes for new parts to appear in Tune-Up shops, down from 30mins to 10mins.
  • Increased the amount of REP awarded by taking part in events.
  • Increased the amount of Bank awarded by taking part in events.
  • Bait crates now reward increased REP.
  • Bait crates now reward increased Bank.
  • Competing against a Roaming Racer will reward you with increased REP.
  • Competing against a Roaming Racer will reward you with increased Bank.
  • Increased rate in which parts are rewarded within Ranked Speedlists.
  • Air Suspension will now appear more frequently.
  • Slightly increased REP and Bank for finishing an event outside of first place.
  • Tune-up shops now stock higher quality parts.
  • Improved quality of cards from targeted rolls in the Tune-up Shops.
  • Increased the level on parts awarded from winning events.
  • Multiple fixes to Improve stability.
  • Improved game performance.

is it worth 1000 bucks

Depends on what you are looking for. It's an arcade racing game with plenty to do. Pretty much like CREW with better handling. The characters and cheese aren't strong enough but those main missions are fun to play.

Nothing really spectacular but not really bad either. With lack of arcade racers on PS4, this fills the void well.

If you are looking for mindless arcade racing, yeah, it's worth it.

BIG UPDATE: NEED FOR SPEED PAYBACK SPEEDCROSS

Our first big content update is here and it’s coming December 19, here's what it brings.

NEW CARS

  • We’re talking about the Mazda RX-7 Spirit R, Volvo 242DL, Volvo Amazon P130, Plymouth Barracuda, Nissan Skyline 2000 GTR and the BMW M3 Evolution II E30.
  • Starting December 19, the abandoned cars will start to appear, hidden within Fortune Valley. Find the car, escape the cops, keep the car. Once you’ve acquired the car, it will then be available to purchase from a dealership of your choice.
  • Abandoned Cars will start appearing across Fortune Valley very soon as a free addition to all owners of NFS Payback.

NEW CLASS: Speedcross

  • Speedcross is an event that focuses on scoring as many points as you can through a pre-determined course. Go big, and go fast as you score points in each of the following areas; Drift Zones, Jumps, Speedtraps and Smackables.
  • The introduction of Speedcross will also include sixteen brand new events, split across four zones; Canyon, Airfield, Construction and Ember valley.
  • Two new cars will be added within the Speedcross pack, the Mini John Cooper Works Countryman and the Infiniti Q60 S. These won’t be the only cars available within the Speedcross class, joining them are the; Nissan 350Z, Ford Focus RS and Dodge Charger.
  • Speedcross will be free to all owners of the Deluxe Edition and will be purchasable as a separate standalone for everyone else.

BMW M Performance Parts - A selection of our BMW cars will be receiving a number of new BMW M Performance parts as part of their visual customization options. These parts will be available to buy and equip the same way as all other visual customization parts, via the garage.

Speedlists – Drift Run - We’re adding a new game mode into Speedlists, Drift Runs. These are based on the Drift Trial events that you will have played within the single player of NFS Payback. Up to 8 players will be able to take part in the event, with a multiplier being given to those that are in front (distance wise).

Steering Wheel Support - Steering wheel support will be coming to all platforms and will be available to everyone from December 19th.

From everyone at Ghost, we’d like to take this moment to wish everyone within the NFS Community a very Happy Holidays and an even better New Year. There’s more to come, and we can’t wait to talk about. We’ll see you in 2018.

SWEET! Fvm9YCI.png
