Viking: Battle For Asgard

Interceptor

Recommended Posts

Finished my second "large scale" battle. It was awesome, kinda like a mini Helm's Deep from LOTR... calling in dragon air strikes FTMFW!!

The game is really addictive, reminds me of the Diablo days, I keep thinking, I'll liberate just one more settlement, complete one more objective and keep playing on and on....

OK!!!! now that im playing the game, yes!!! .. the game is damn addictive .. the battle moves are awesome ... the fatalities are amazing ... the stealth kills are awesome .. and the stealth missions are amazing as well ..

the second battle (the one which tyler called mini helms deep from LOTR) is truly huge .... almost epic proportions ... but the sad part is the the frame rate takes a beating here ... for a moment, its like a fuccking slide show ..

almost

and as tyler said, the cut scenes are bad .. voice acting - bad and camera angle is sometimes irritating.

apart for these -ves, the game is truly good and worth playing ...

atleast from what i played till now, dosnt deserve the 6.3 rating given by IGN.

In spite of all the bad reviews this game got from media, I thought I would give this one a try primarily because I love hack and slash games. I played this game without any high expectations and ended up thoroughly enjoying it.

The story follows the journey of Skarin, a young Viking warrior who is chosen by Freya the principle deity of Midgard to lead an assault against Hel and her army of undead and disgraced warriors (called LEGION). Hel wants to extract vengeance on the gods of Asgard and bring about Ragnorak on to Midgard.

The story begins with Skarin battling Hel’s harbinger in which he is mortally wounded. At the brink of death, Freya appears before him and asks him to lead the battle against Hel’s forces and so goes the story.

You start off each level (if that’s what we can call it) in a Viking settlement where you can enchant your weapons with elemental powers, upgrade your health, buy flame pots (bombs), health potions, throwing axes and treasure maps. You can learn new combat moves for a price by visiting the battle arena. The landscape is dotted with waypoints called “Leystones” which enable you to teleport from point to point. Treasure chests, bags and urns are scattered all over the map which help you pay for your purchases.

A typical level goes thus .. You roam around the country side fighting the Legion scum and freeing Viking settlements. The leaders of these settlements give you side quests, which you need to fulfill in order to persuade them to join your army. These side quests range from bringing food and medicine to the settlement to assassinating a traitor to clearing an area of enemies. Each level ends with a final assault of the enemy stronghold. There are certain criteria, which you need to fulfill before you can launch the final assault though.

These final assault can be particularly breath taking and has an epic feel to it. Imagine thousands of you soldiers and enemy soldiers facing off in battle (though the frame rate takes a beating here). Each assault has 3 – 4 stages and each stage ends with the death of enemy sub bosses. Killing enemy sub bosses gives you dragon rune stones which enable you to summon dragon air strikes on strategic enemy locations on the battlefield. The assault ends with the killing of the main boss or with the capturing the enemy waypoint.

The thing that struck me the most about this game is the combat system, which I must say is very smooth. The game is a button masher’s delight and is ideal for a casual gamer. You get to behead, dismember and chop your enemies into two spilling his blood and guts all over the place. I guarantee you that this game will fulfill most of your wildest bloodthirsty fantasies.

Imagine .. you are walking along the countryside .. you are spotted by a group of 4 enemies who come charging at you .. you dodge the first enemy’s attack and slice him into two in one move, then you jump up and bring down both your weapons on the second enemy’s shield shattering it and then you chop off his hands you then head butt the third enemy who is too close to you dazing him for a moment just enough time to execute a fatality on him and then the last enemy .. you evade his strike and behead him .. again in a single move .. and all this takes place in 7 – 10 seconds .. awesome and brilliant.

The game is not all about direct face-to-face combat. There are a few missions, which require stealth, which are fun as well. A typical stealth mission involves you infiltrating an enemy stronghold and retrieving an artifact on the way killing the odd enemy who spots you or stands in your path. But then, if you are feeling particularly blood thirsty, you can just hack and slash your way thru the enemy camp. The second procedure being very difficult because of the sheer no of enemies charging at you. Difficult but not impossible.

Now, the positives and negatives of the game.

Positives:

1. The game looks beautiful. The grass is green and the snow, white. The vistas are huge. The landscape from the top of a cliff or a tower in the game looks spectacular.

2. The combat system is very impressive, smooth and noob friendly. I can go on and on about the combat system but then .. .

3. Seas of soldiers battling in the final assaults look spectacular. You really need to see it to believe it.

4. Stealth missions are fun.

Negatives:

1. The game could use better sound effects and background score. A good background score would have added more intensity of the combat system and the final assaults.

2. The cut scenes and the voice acting in the game are just pathetic. The voice acting is especially bad. There is no lip moment and the only way you make out as to who is speaking on the screen during these cut scenes is by identifying the voice as male or female.

3. The camera angles during combat can be annoying at times.

4. The frame rate tends to stutter at times, especially during the huge battles.

5. The boss battles are way too easy. Killing the final boss was the toughest among all the bosses not because the boss itself was tough, but because the sheer number of enemies you need to kill to get to it.

In spite of all the negatives, the game is really worth playing just because of its combat system. The combat system is good enough to neutralize all the negatives.

So if you like hack and slash and give a damn about the cut scenes and the story, I guarantee that this is one game you will definitely enjoy.

^^ LOL :(

Nice review reapah :) Shame they didn't try harder on this game. The three big battles almost devolve into slideshows sometimes. Or atleast they did in the videos I've seen!
