Guys!!! I know that im a little late to the party .. but here goes.

I have never been a big fan of this franchise, heck!!! this is the first game I have played in this series. But then, the impression I got when I finished the game was WOW. Why??? Read on …

You play not only as the furry pointy-eared protagonist Ratchet (duh!!) who is supposed to be the last of the Lombaxes but also as Clank, Ratchet’s multi-utility robotic sidekick. This time there enemy is the “humble dictator” the EVIL Emperor Tachyon who is supposed to be the last of the Cragmites whom the Lombaxes supposedly eliminated ages ago. Emperor Tachyon is on a mission to search and obtain a long lost device called the “Dimensionator to help him in his quest for Universal domination (world domination is so passé). Ratchet and Clank are on a mission to stop him. In their quest, they go planet hopping and on the way face off with Tachyon’s minions, space pirates and other sundry monsters with the help of a few allies of course and in the process find out more about themselves (read Lombax and Cragmite History).

The game starts off with Ratchet and Clank getting a distress call from Captain Quark saying that the city is being attacked by giant, heavily armed robotic warriors and our two heroes rush to his rescue.

A special mention should go to the game for its graphics, which are stunningly beautiful. They are almost as good as any modern day big budget animated movie. The game is colorful and vibrant and the attention to detail is amazing. The background score and voice acting is very good and so are the sound effects.

The game itself is action packed, right from the word go, be it sliding on rails escaping enemy fire and dodging oncoming trains or infiltrating emperor Tachyon’s high security prison to rescue an ally or facing off pirates to get back the dimensionator, or facing off with the space pirates, there is never a dull moment in the game.

When you are not fighting in the game, you will be laughing your head off during the cut scenes. The antics of Captain Quark need a special mention here. Mr. Zurkon’s one liners are really funny. My favorite part in the game is to summon Mr. Zurkon and let him take care of my enemies while I listened to his rib tickling one-liners. The game can be called a stress buster of sorts.

You have a wide arsenal of off beat weapons in the game. When the going gets tough, you can use the Groovitron which induces your enemies into a not-stop dancing frenzy while you fire away at them or the Nano Swarm, a gadget which unleashes a swarm of laser guided nanobots which sting your enemy to death. Then you have the notorious Mr. Zurkon, (my personal favorite) who takes great pleasure in destroying your enemies and letting out cheesy one-liners, which have you laughing. You also have the tornado launcher, which creates cataclysmic tornados, blowing your enemies away. For those who are less …. er …. inclined to try out these funky weapons, we have the standard laser guided rockets, flame throwers, Fusion Grenades, etc. The above weapons are just a few among the wide range of weapons available in the game. Your weapons upgrade their damage capability automatically when you use them. You can also upgrade your weapon’s rate of fire, ammo and range at weapon shops by paying for it in “raritarium” a resource, which you collect, from the enemies you have killed and from special crates in the map.

The wide arsenal of weapons not only makes the game more fun to play but also adds tremendous replayability value to it. Replayability wise, the game is “poora pisa vasool”. The game also has skill points, which are something like achievements on the Xbox 360. For getting these skill points, you need to meet a specified requirements like – perform a move a certain number of times or kill certain enemies with a certain weapon or acquire all available gadgets in the game and so on. Getting skill points unlocks extra content like cheats and secrets in the game. And there are hidden “gold bolts” through out the game which when obtained also unlocks extra content like different skins for Ratchet and stuff all adding to the games replayability. There are also “Holoplans” hidden in the game, which are supposedly meant to be blue prints of a deadly weapon. Collecting all of them unlocks the weapon.

Destroying any thing in the game, be it enemies or crates gives you bolts which can be used to buy new weapons, ammunition, gadgets and armour. You will never run out of ammunition in the game courtesy the ammunition crates almost everywhere in the game and the weapon shops.

The six axis functions in the game to guide a freefalling Ratchet away from incoming missiles or to guide him thru a specified path as he glides thru the air with the help of his new robo-wings. The six-axis controls may take a little time to get used to. For those who are uncomfortable with the sixaxis, you can always switch over to the analogue controls.

Now, the positives and negatives of the game.

Positives

1. Stunning graphics.

2. Huge range of funky weapons.

3. The replayability of the game is unbelievable.

4. The humor in game is top class.

Negatives

1. er …. umm … er……. er ……. game is too short?????

Conclusion

The game is a must play on the PS3, not only for its beautiful cartoony graphics and its groovy weapons but also for the awesome humor the game has.

Please read and comment.

Just purchased R&C:ToD for Rs. 1495 + Rs. 20 shipping and handling from eBay. I thought it would be the platinum version but when I got it, the box looked the same as the original (non platinum version)!! Delivery happened within 3 days of purchase (locally in Mumbai). Arrived in perfect condition.

If anyone interested in buying it, check out the listing at eBay here.

[P.S.: I'm in no way affiliated with the seller, just spreading the word! ]

Cheers.
