I finally got a copy of this game. Up yours, you PA-buggers.

Here's my review on it. (Please not that I have not finished the game)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS3 owners have had to sit tight and curse as Team Ninja brought out first Ninja Gaiden: Black exclusively for the Xbox and then Ninja Gaiden II exclusively for its successor, Xbox 360. But, there was good news as they re-created Ninja Gaiden Black with better graphics and a more content, this time for the PS3. They called it; Ninja Gaiden: Sigma.

Story:

The main protagonist of the game is a young ninja called Ryu Hayabusa. He is the son of the chief of the village, who incidentally is away on a long training trip. In his father’s absence, Ryu has been entrusted with the Dragon Sword, one of the swords of legend. Its evil counterpart, the Dark Dragon Blade, lies deep in the Hayabusa village, guarded by the ninjas there to prevent anyone from unleashing its terrifying power again. But one day, while Ryu was away visiting the Shadow Clan, his village was attacked, the ninjas slaughtered. The mastermind behind the attack was a Greater Fiend called Doku, who wanted the Dark Dragon Blade. Ryu follows him to get back the Blade and to get … revenge.

Gameplay:

This game can be called as a martial arts lover’s wet-dream. You get to do everything you have seen ninjas do in movies / anime.

Ryu starts of with the Dragon Sword, which is a katana. As the game progresses, he will get access to dual katanas, nanchakus, bo-staffs and what not. The square button is for a normal attack. The /_\ button is for a power attack. As with all such games, the normal attack is faster and has little recovery time. The power attacks are slower and have a higher recovery time. You can also press a combination of buttons for a devastating combo. Of course, you will need the scroll for it first. All throughout the game, you will get scrolls which will describe how to perform a particular combo. It is interesting to note that some combos are weapon specific. For example, the “Flying Swallow”, which beheads an enemy, cannot be executed if you are using a bo-staff.

The O button is used for projectile weapons. You start of with the shuriken, which every ninja must have. Then you will come across other weapons such as bows, smoke bombs, etc. It is interesting to note that while shuriken are unlimited, the number of arrows you can carry for your bow is limited and on top of that, you cannot carry more than a certain amount. Projectile weapons are good for disrupting enemy units which like to take pot shots at you from a distance instead of fighting you like a man.

The X button is used to jump and for executing combos. You can jump normally across a gap if it is narrow enough. If it is wider, you can simply use the adjacent wall and run across it to reach the other side. For reaching high places in narrow confinements, Ryu can perform what is known as the “Bird Flip”. Here, he runs straight up a fall and flips back (Just imagine Neo in the fight against Morpheus where he runs straight up a beam and flips over Morpheus). Just use the Bird Flip continuously and voila, you are up there in a place where no ordinary mortal could have reached.

For those who want to get into “Naruto” mode, there are a few ninjustus called “ninpo arts”. Pressing the /_\ and O buttons simultaneously will execute the selected ninpo art. Ninpo Arts will consume ninpo points.

Now, this game has a new playable character, the generously endowed “Rachel”. Her weapon of choice is a gargantuan hammer which she wields as easily as my fifth grade teacher wielded her switch. She is there only for a short while, but is fun to play with. She has the same controls as Ryu, except that she cannot execute ninpo arts (she is not a ninja, duh!). Though slower on the attack speed, she wields much more power than our masked marauder.

The enemy units have pretty decent AI. This means that you simply cannot keep pressing the attack button and wipe them out easily. The enemy can dodge, block and do sneaky attacks. This means that learning how to block and dodge is very, very important in this game. Trust me. I learned that the hard way. It is also important to use appropriate weapons for certain enemy units.

Killing enemy units will net you various coloured “essence”. Blue essence will restore you health. Red will restore your ninpo points. Yellow essence has two uses. One is to calculate karma points at the end of each chapter. It’s sort of an achievement system where you are ranked according to number of kills, time taken and essence collected.

As you move through the game, you will find a suit of old armor and a stand at various places. Pressing the square button will summon the legendary blacksmith Masamune (or it could be Murasame., I forgot). He will upgrade your weapons if you give him certain items and sell health drinks, scrolls, maps and various trinkets that can do wondrous things like increase your attack power. How do you play for all these? Remember the yellow essence I told you about. Well, that is the currency you use here. The flip side is that the karma points calculated will be affected since the amount of essence you have will be reduced.

Graphics:

The graphics are pretty good, but not exactly PS3 material if you compare it to games like Genji: Days of the Blade and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. The camera is controllable, which is a big plus for this game, but it has its bad moments. It doesn’t turn properly in most places. Of course, you can always press R1 to reset the camera behind Ryu but that really becomes a problem when you are busy pulling of combos to save your sorry hide.

Sound:

The background score is hard rock/ metal and matches the modern settings and the tone of the game perfectly. The voice acting is nothing special, but it’s not bad either. What I liked most was how different type of weapons sound different when you hit the enemy.

My verdict:

Definitely one of the games to own for the PS3 if you like hack and slash games, specially if you do not have an Xbox 360.

Just started this game and feels like Ninja Gaiden II was walk in the park compared to this. It's ridiculously difficult. The camera angles are such a pain in the a*s. Chapter 3 took me nearly and hour and 49 minutes to complete. But I still haven't switched the difficulty level down. I'll play it one chapter a day perhaps. That was it will ease out the pain. Else it will be seriously frustrating. :P

The original Ninja Gaiden Black on the Xbox was the ultimate masochistic masterpiece. Sigma's difficulty is actually toned down several notches from that game. My NG disc is lying untouched after the last time I was brutalized.

If this is what toned down means, then I shudder to even think what the original game would be like. :(

Have you completed the game by any chance? If yes, then how long did it take you to complete it?
