ghb
i haven't played much but whatever i have played i like it reminds me a lot of assassin's creed in terms of combat and the repetitiveness...i spoiled AC because i played too much of it too soon and didn't feel like completing it coz i felt i was doing the same thing over and over again...i'm playing this at a much slower pace
reaper
OK .. here is my full review .. Prince of Persia. Earlier last year, when I first heard that a new Prince of Persia was being made, I really had my doubts if this latest title would be a worthy successor to the original widely popular and hit trilogy. I felt that the resurrection of the franchise was a bad move by UBI and that it was milking an almost dead series. Well, now after playing this game, I realized how wrong I am. Prince of Persia is back. The new muscular and irritatingly talkative and nameless “Prince”, a wanderer and a grave robber, is searching for his lost donkey “Farah” which is supposedly loaded with gold and is himself lost in a desert sandstorm when he stumbles upon the “City of Light:”, where “Ahriman”, the god of darkness and everything evil has been imprisoned since the last battle between him and hiss brother, the god of light and good, Ormazd ages ago. Here he meets the beautiful Elika, princess of the city of light. The two witness the destruction of the tree of life holding Ahriman prisoner there by releasing corruption and Ahriman’s chosen four upon the city. The various parts of the city are corrupted by these chosen and the prince, with a lot of help from Elika, needs to defeat them all and heal the fertile grounds to clear the lands of corruption and stop Ahriman. The developers, Ubisoft Montreal, this time took a gamble by concentrating more on platforming elements than on combat and the gamble paid off. The result is the prince navigates between obstacles, performing acrobatics with grace and fluidity of a ballet dancer, when done successfully done is a treat to watch. The controls might take a bit of getting used to especially to those who played the original trilogy but the learning curve is short, the controls, very noob friendly and spoton. Picture this .. The prince jumps a gap and lands on a ledge, jumps again, hangs on a pole, swings and double jumps to a another pole, then jumps on to a wall, wallruns and jumps on to the opposite wall, then jumps on to a pillar, climbs all the way to ceiling, roof runs to the next pillar, comes down and jumps on to firm land. All this in 10 seconds or less. Wish my description were as awesome as the maneuvers the prince executes. The graphics in one word, AWESOME. The art style is fresh and colorful. The transformation of the landscape from dark and dead when corrupted to verdant, vibrant and colorful when healed is amazing. It is worth healing the land just to see it transform if not to stop Ahriman. Even if you are not a fan of the original trilogy, hell even if you are not a gamer, one should have a go at it just to see how beautiful a game can look. The game is non-linier, allowing you to clear any objective in any order provided Elika has the right powers. This brings us to the “Light Seeds”. Once the land is healed of corruption, the “Light Seeds” are scattered all over it and it takes a lot of backtracking, to collect them. This is not essentially a bad thing. In fact UBIsoft must have deliberately done that just to make you realize how drastically different the transformed landscape looks. And it really is worth the effort. Collecting Light Seeds allows Elika to unlock new powers which in turn, will allow the Prince to travel to new areas in the city. The introduction of the Elika into the gameplay is brilliant. She not only helps the prince in his acrobatic maneuvers helping him double jump and activating power plates, but also helps him in combat. Elika’s moves can be used as a part of your combo in battle resulting in devastating damage to the enemy. Also Elika does not allow the prince to die be it battle or otherwise. If the prince fails in the middle of a maneuver, Elika saves him and carries him back at the last solid ground you had been. Being saved by Elika in the middle of a battle allows the enemies to regenerate. This results in no irritating “game over” and load screens and helps in maintaining the momentum of the game. Enemies are very few and far in between. Each area has around 2 – 3 minions and a boss. The minions can be avoided altogether if you are quick enough to reach them and kill them even before they spawn. The combat moves however lack the variety as seen in the original trilogy. So in a sense lack of too many enemies actually helps the game in not making the combat repetitive. You will encounter the same boss multiple times in multiple levels before finally killing it. Even then, the boss fights are anything but boring and will leave you wanting more. Even though the game concentrates a lot on platforming, the combat is no way is its weak link. The game’s sound track is topnotch and a special mention should be made about the conversations between the Prince and Elika. They will talk a lot during the game and though at times irritating, their conversation will bring a cheer to your face no matter what your mood is. What is good? What is evil? What is light? What is dark? Well.... Prince of Persia does not explain all these but it does a very good job in keeping you entertained and leaving you wanting for more. The positives: § Spectacular graphics and fresh and colorful art style is a must see for every games and non gamer. § The platforming elements and the few puzzles in the game are the best among recent games. § Fluid movements of the prince while performing sequences of acrobatics are a treat to watch. § Noob friendly controls. § Introduction of Elika does away with the annoying “game over” screens and load times when you fail. The Negatives: § The game is short. It hardly lasts for over 10 hours if you are not particular about collecting all the Light Seeds. § The wee bit of backtracking may turn off the less patient of the gamers. Now, excuse me while I go for my second playthrough. This time as the original Prince from The Sands of Time and Farah.

piksdevil
Hi guys, I really didn't expect the game to be so short. And the bosses were repetative with the same fighting skills in each fertile grounds and also inside the black gate. Previous POP versions were much better than this one I guess. What do you guys say?? And the game ended with a to be continued note........... God knows what they will come up with.

Aftrunner
Finally got around to playing this for an hour or so (temp traded F3 PC for PoP PC with a friend) and its pretty dissapointing. Literally. Its pretty. And dissapointing. I dont like the partial control the game gives you over platforming (I dont know who thought it was a good idea to eliminate the wall run button and integrate it with the jump button, same for chimney jumps where it gives you a ridiculously large amount of time to press one button). Havent run into any puzzles yet but its too soon for that I guess. It feels like platforming for 3 year olds. But I do like the combat. I never liked the combat in the last three games and this one is kinda fun. Plus it looks good. So I will stick with it for the moment. Also it runs pretty well on my rig. Running it at 720p with V sync and 2X AA.
Tyler
Started playing the game last night. It should be called "Prince Of Persia: Press A to beat the game". No seriously, it's as simple as a game can get. On one hand I can see how this is disappointing to some but on the other I feel it's exactly what I need at the moment. I'm tired of games being overly difficult at times... sometimes I just wanna sit back and have fun without feeling tense every single moment. I had the same feeling about Saints Row 2 and now it's PoP. Yes, there's no way to die and the platforming is ultra simplistic... I mean the Prince automatically changes his position when you jump onto a column to face the next column... I was wondering why he doesn't just jump on his own to the next instead of me having to press A. But still it works... at least for me since I already suck at platformers. I guess this has already been said a million times before but the game looks absolutely gorgeous. The animation is fluid... the Prince and Elika move with such grace! Combat is pretty cool... thankfully it's not button mashing but more time based. The moves during combat look very cool especially when you pull off a nice combo. However the Prince moves VERY slow during combat when he's not attacking. I also like that you face only a single enemy at a time making each encounter feel unique even if you're fighting a standard grunt. I can already tell that the game is going to be repetitive. Then again I enjoyed Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2... both Ubisoft... both repetitive. I guess Ubisoft really needs to bring in some innovation and creativity to their recent titles. They make games which look amazing and play well but somehow they just can't seem to add a lot variety. It's like they create a template with a checklist of gameplay ideas and all you have to follow the same thing until you beat the game.
CarbonCore
Finish the game and you'll like it. The platforming bit gets longer and more complex as you unlock more power plates.
Tyler
^^ I'm already liking it. I had a question - I can see a couple of Light Seeds I simply cannot reach, tried everything but there's no way I can reach those areas. Do I get to unlock some power/ability later which can let me grab these or am I simply not trying hard? Also, what do I get if I collect all 45 seeds in an area? There are power plates in each area which you have to activate to gain access to those areas. Thats why its a good idea to re-visit each area once you unlock new power plate. There are certain places where you have to combine walljump, wallrun and Elika grab to reach those high seeds. Dunno about collecting all light seeds, I think there's an achievement for that.
