Persona 3 FES

^^ You can say that again. 4 is SO much harder than 3FES!

I'm grinding

Yukiko's castle

just to make ends meet :D And the damned things set up so that you can't grind properly either.

lithuvien is right about the lack of suicidal overtones opening it up to more audiences. I haven't checked but this might have gotten a lower rating than 3FES just for that.

^^ Yeah I had to grind it twice to get through( and I know what you mean,it's not built for grinding. Experience dips to 2 or 3 points per shadow and a max of 50,doesnt... do much :wOOtjumpy: ),but I think synthesizing persona is soo much more important here, back in p3 you could be level 25 and your persona could be level 18 and you'd still win easily, but here, your persona really has to be up to speed with your personal level, that made a huge difference..

I really like the new mortal blow system, and also the guard mode,it reduces the chances you seeing the game over screen without doing anything wrong..and the AI has been imporved a lot too..

Gee, I don;t understand why people are labelling P3 as an easy game. I mean, it takes me 3-4 tries to beat the "no-weakness" gaurdians in Tartarus, even though I have decent levels.

But seriously, dressing up Yukari / Mitsuru in the hgh-cut armour was awesome.

"Are you serious ... Well, if it is for the good of the team" :roflroll2:

Guys, need some help.

I got the Devil S Link from the guy in the P.Mall after he took 40K from me, :cry5:, but after that, I can't see him there. I pressed X too quickly during the conversation so I don't know where he is.

Also, where do I find the athelete from the Rival school (THe one who you meet after the track compettion)? Does he give an S.Link as well?

Game Review

Persona 3: FES

Playstation 2

My Rating: 8/10

What do you get when you cross a Japanese dating simulator with a role-playing game? You get Persona 3, the third installment in Atlus' highly acclaimed and very successful series.

Story: 7/10

For some unknown reason, every midnight, there occurs a phenomenon known only as the "Dark Hour". During this time, ordinary people are turned into coffins, while some survive that transmutation, only to be hunted down by mysterious beings known as "Shadows". A group of special people must battle these Shadows to protect mankind. Of course, all these special people happen to study at the same school "Gekkoukan High". During the day you are an ordinary high school student with the usual chores of studying, joining clubs, making friends and most importantly, making girlfriends. During midnight, you explore the mysterious tower called Tartarus, the source of all Shadows.

Now, this would have made for a very interesting game, but somehow, it appears as if the script-writers forgot whether they were writing an RPG or a dating simulation. Lets be honest, you can't have both and still have a good storyline. The whole plot felt a little … insipid, for a better word.

Game play: 8/10

There are two parts to the game play; the first is your traditional RPG style and the second is the traditional dating simulation. Let's take them one-by-one.

The RPG part starts when you enter Tartarus, the tower of Shadows. You can make a party up to four members. Like most other RPGs, you main character has to be in the party. There are no random encounters in this game. Instead, you will be able to see shadowy forms as you travel through Tartarus. Conveniently, enemy units will appear on your mini-map as dots well before you can see them, which gives you ample time to prepare for battle. Now, battle commences when you and the shadow come into contact. Here is where the fun starts. To initiate contact, you must either hit the Shadow or get hit by it. If you hit it, there is a good chance that you will get a "Player Advantage" situation, where the enemy must wait one full turn before doing anything. Getting hit will have the opposite happening.

Now, all shadows look alike before you begin the battle. It is only during battle that you can find you what kind of enemies you battle. You can use weapon attacks or magical attacks. To perform magical attacks, you have to shoot what little brains your party member has to bring out his special power called Persona, which is supposed to be a manifestation of his / her personality. All the players' attributes like strength, magic, speed, weakness and resistance to different elements will be governed by the Persona. All the characters have a single persona, which makes sense, since it is supposed to be a manifestation of your personality. But for some strange reason, our hero has the capacity to use multiple personas, and by multiple I mean a lot. I managed to find out almost 30 personas. Either the lad is gifted or he has a serious case of multiple personality disorder.

If you hit an enemy at its weak point, you can "knock it down", which will render it unable to do anything till it uses a turn to get back up again. Unfortunately, this also applies for players. If you get knocked down, all you will do on your next turn is dust yourself and get back up again. If you manage to knock down every enemy in the battle, you can gang up on the enemy to inflict massive damage.

As the leader of the group, you can assign special tasks to each member, like "Full Assault", or "Heal/Support", etc. At all times, there would be a member outside Tartarus who would, feed you tactical information like enemy weaknesses, boss locations, etc. Even the group attack has to be first sanctioned by you. Talk about power. This means that if you are incapacitated in any way, then these miracle moves will not happen.

All of this is well and good, but the system has one big and annoying flaw. The game is over when the main character dies. Imagine you playing for 30 minutes, having gained two – three levels, several rare items and feeling like the cat's pajamas. Suddenly you run into a laughable bunch that just happens to use a low level death spell. By some strange calculation, the spell works and you are dead. That's it. Game over for you, even though there are three deadly forces of destruction waiting to tear the Shadows a new one. It was precisely this mechanism that almost made me throw the game out of the window.

Now to the dating part. During school hours and in the evenings, you can try and make friends. Consider this as a "side-quest". Each friendship you cultivate will result in a "Social Link", which is then used to level up your persona that result from a fusion. Maxing a social link will also unlock the ultimate persona for that particular social link. The final Persona usually come equipped with devastating spells that you will find quite useful as you proceed higher and higher into Tartarus. Though this concept is interesting, making so many social link tends to become tedious after a point of time. Also, the process isn't that emotionally involving as in a standard dating sim.

Sound: 9/10

A lot of the dialogues are voiced, which is to be expected given the release date of the game. Thankfully, most of the voice actors are pretty good. People who are supposed to be emotional get emotional, other characters sound flat, but then again, they are supposed to be a little emotionally dysfunctional.

The opening music is great. There has been a lot of times when I simply let the music play again and again while I finished my cooking in the kitchen, tapping my feet to the tune. The music in the real world (read non Dark Hour) is quite upbeat and peppy. The music turns a little somber and mysterious when you visit the Velvet room, as befits the situation. Even the music that plays during the sad / tragic parts has been done very well.

The only part where the music falls flat is in Tartarus. The music is monotonous. Even though you have the option of selecting your own music, each track ranges from poor to average. A little better variety would have made the journey through Tartarus a little more interesting.

Graphics: 8.5/10

Everything looks anime style. In fact, the opening scene reminded me of how Jigouku Shoujo looks. Everything at night looks decidedly creepy. Even the in-game graphics feel as if you have taken control of a bunch of anime characters. The camera can be rotated 360 degrees, but there is no provision for the vertical camera angles to change. The various sceneries like the school, the malls, the shrine, etc are tastefully done and have all the little ingredients that make them look believable. When the characters speak, you won't see their facial expressions, but a portrait of them with the appropriate expression (happy, shy, angry) while the dialogue goes on. The developers have made lot of use of exclamation signs over the characters heads to very good effect.

The only bone of contention here is that there is lot of load time in between screens. The load time is on an average, three to four seconds, with the load time shooting upto six to seven seconds on some occasions.

Also, for some strange reason, the game wouldn't let me choose the memory card. It automatically zoomed in to the card in slot 1 and I still haven't seen anything that could let me change it. When you try to load a save game, the pointer will always be to the first file, not the last game you saved. This becomes a problem if you are resuming after a long break, for then you have to carefully search through all those files to see where you last left off.

Replay Value: 6/10

Well, after you have finished the game once, you are given the option to start a new game where you can carry over all your social links. This will allow to you max out every possible social link in the game. Other than that, there is nothing much to look forward to, unless you want to try your luck at a higher difficulty level.

^^ Nice review mate!

The opening scene reminded me of Jigouku Shoujo too. I wish there were more/longer anime scenes in the rest of the game...

Music is definitely the highlight. Apart from the J-pop stuff (which is cool is it's own way), I love the full moon boss and floor boss themes (the tracks are called Master of Shadow & Master of Tartarus).
