shockwave
Played it last night. Finished 2 episodes. What an awesome game. Loving every bit of it. The ending of Episode two was too good. And I love the songs they used at the end of each episode. Also, it helps me when I finish an episode since I can decide if I wanna play further or quit for the day. Like a real TV show. Nice. The game looks beautiful. Quite a few places have low textures, probably from early build, but most of the environment is praise worthy. Remedy has pulled off a stunner in the graphics and lighting department. And just when I thought I played the most atmospheric game Metro 2033, Alan Wake comes in the contention. Seriously, not only the whole atmosphere is sh*t scary, it's awesome and very unique (I haven't played any survival horror games before, but I have seen people playing). The time when Takens appears and the whole atmosphere changes, it gives me shivers. Even the foliage reacts to the wind which honestly I didn't expect from a Remedy game. Story is kick a*s so far. Sam lake isn't shy in revealing his inspirations, possibly his biggest inspiration must be Stephen king (with two references so far). Honestly, the only reason I picked this game was for the Story. Right from the first trailer I knew it had a lot of potential so I had to pick it. Graphics, etc are always secondary for me in a game. I loved Max Payne games so already a fan of Lake's writing. I hope the story stays strong throughout. In Episode one, I loved the part where Alan had to collect the keys, and see a person inside the Diner. That little passage in the dark was so creepy, and it was so bright outside. I love it . Also when we finally take the keys from that Lady, I came out and went back in, she was gone. So cool they did that because I love games developers does things which you can "miss". It only shows their detailing. Similarly, the TV and Radio shows can be easily missed, but they're very interesting so I try not to. All in all, I am super impressed and I can't wait to continue. Oh and Bonus disc is full of WIN. Do not fail to check it out.
Tyler
He even admits that Stephen King is his favorite author later on in the game. *Not a plot spoiler* And yes, the wind/foliage effects are very well done. My only problem is that the enemies aren't creepy enough and there's just too many of them. I honestly don't find a bunch of lumberjacks scary at all after experiencing and surviving Silent Hill six times. It's a great game no doubt and story is good enough to make you keep playing... just not scary enough.
Bulovski
The next section you'll encounter should change that - it's not scary as such, just bloody frantic.
shockwave
I'd like that. I wish they'd allowed free-roaming in day time. Let the levels in the forest be linear, but they should have kept the bright falls open. Was watching one of the documentary and the whole thing is lovely and HUGE. Tyler
I think that's how it was supposed to be - free roam during the day and linear missions during the night. But Remedy eventually settled for a linear game. The daytime sections are jawdropping though. I just wish they were longer...
shockwave
May be they wanna keep that for a sequel? I heard someone said the sequel might not take place in Bright falls. That would waste their hard work. Also: He even admits that Stephen King is his favorite author later on in the game. *Not a plot spoiler* And yes, the wind/foliage effects are very well done. The enemies just look humans, even their physics are normal so guess I'd agree that they don't "look" scary (at least when we have blown off their cover with light). Even when you're fighting them (specially in low numbers, like one or two) and keep dodging their attacks, the scare goes away. But what scares me is the tension that builds around, the shift in the atmosphere and the way they appear from no where. It just scares me going in darker places. (like someone said earlier, at times I don't want to step out of the light under the poles). So the atmosphere is scarier than the enemies themselves.
