Microsoft Surface

The Microsoft Surface tablet comes in two options, Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro.

Windows RT is the lightweight option, both physically and spec-wise.

676g

9.33 mm thick

10.6" ClearType HD DIsplay

31.5 Wh battery

microSD, USB 2.0, Micro HD Video

Office Home & Student 2013 RT, Touch Cover, Type Cover

32 GB, 64 GB

Windows 8 Pro, is the obvious pro option, and is touted as a "full PC." It comes with a heftier weight (and likely pricetag):

903 g

13.5 mm thick

10.6" ClearType Full HD Display

42 Wh battery

microSDXC, USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort Video,

Touch Cover, Type Cover, Pen with Palm Block

64 GB, 128 GB

Microsoft Surface comes with a sturdy, integrated kickstand and a SmartCover-esque cover, that features a fully functioning keyboard, with a trackpad. It connects with a "single magnetic click" that'll make it an ease to swap out (or just take off, if you'd rather).

Microsoft knows not everyone is sold on virtual keyboards though, and has created a high-tech cover for all those tactile typers.

"I can touch type on this as fast as I can type on any keyboard." said Michael Anguilo. Touch cover comes in five colors - black, red, blue, and pink.

Surface also comes with two cameras, called "LifeCams." The rear-facing camera is angled so when positioned on a kickstand, it can still record meetings with ease.

Because Surface is a full-on PC, it will run true PC games. Eric Neustadter, from Xbox Live Operations, tweeted colloquially that it could run Civ IV and V, unlike the iPad, and that it will be "the greatest Civilization-playing device known to mankind."

No price or date of availability announced. Expect 500-600 for the Win RT (ARM version) and 900 bucks for the intel version.

That might be quite close to the actual price considering they said that the Intel-chip "Pro" version would be “near ultrabook class PCs”.

WinRT is the obvious one Microsoft will spend all their marketing might on. It is the one they expect to be the iPad competitor, their volume tablet business. Price, battery life and display is key here. I dont think 1366x768 will cut it when u get a tablet at greater than full HD today.

The Win8 pro tabs are probably just for a niche audience and enterprises . But i doubt it'll succeed if its 1 kg in weight and thick. Sorry to say, no one wants full windows on a touch screen. Full windows experience on touch is pretty crap. Its not meant to be used with fingers

'Surface' is a stupid name for a tablet .... if MS supports ability to develop content / write code etc, maybe the pro version will some some .... other wise, dont understand who'll want to buy a 1kg tablet !

Pro version is basically a laptop with a touchscreen. It runs full Win8. No needs for any developer support as all exsiting Windows apps will work.

Win RT is the challenge for them as its new. No apps yet and needs developer support. Not to mention, Win RT is the one going for volume and competing with the iPad.

But seeing how crap WP7 is and how its hardly made a blip in the market so far, dont know how well WinRT will do. The first problem is all the confusing lineups. Win 8 pro for tabs..Win RT for tabs..How will OEMs translate that and educate the customer? We geeks will know it. But customers wont who buy it from brick and mortar stores.

Then the realization that "Oh damn, This doesn't run photoshop. This is not the version of Win tablet i wanted...."..Microsoft has lot of work in its hands...Its just sad they didnt announce pricing, battery, availability yet. Win 8 seems to be in the making forever. Meanwhile Apple has already announced a ship date and price for Mountain Lion

what do you mean its hardly made a blip in the market ? Win 7 is loaded onto almost every laptop manufactured by any OEM. Many companies have upgraded to win7 from winxp. They would've sold hundreds of millions of licenses by now !

Considering the weight of the pro version and the expected not so good battery life, I would rather buy a nice win 8 notebook for myself. Or a hybrid.

Well... The Pro version does have a bigger battery than the RT one, so maybe the battery life won't be that bad.

Wp7 = Windows phone 7 ≠ windows 7

Cuz...

Windows RT tablet will not run Win32 apps like the Pro version, so it will be a successor to WP7...not actually. But ya its stripped down.

DS has pointed out the problem correctly, both tablets are very different products.

It's Windows ..

Just make a product and developers will come

WP7 has a 4% marketshare but already has over 100,000 apps

And BTW Windows 8 Store already has over 20,000 metro apps .. Your no apps argument is flawed

And why do people forget that Windows RT and 8 both have many security features catering to enterprise

And please don't say why enterprise will buy gimmicky metro ..

Solid iPads sales are reported in enterprise section in US

All Adobe needs to create a photoshop app and it will work

iOS got it just this year ..

will it run skyrim :P

Yes ofcourse ..

The pro version is intel based ..

It will run Skyrim .. Like a Bauss .. B)
