No Trophies = No Buy?

Would you play without them?!

No%20Trophies%20equals%20No%20Buy%20-%20Trophy%20wife%202%20-%20www.PlayThree.net.jpg

So after much rumour, months of waiting, and one false start Sony have finally launched Trophies. Trophies are the PlayStation 3 gaming reward system which is clearly inspired by the success of Achievements on the Xbox 360. As Sony only implemented the Trophy system in July games that support it have been sparse. But this holiday will see the trickle of PS3 games that support Trophies slowly turn into a flood. But just how important are they to making a purchasing decision?

Once upon a time completing a game was reward in itself, but now you can receive Achievement Points or Trophies for accomplishing extra objectives. They don’t change the game for a player, and not everybody responds to them, but the effect is the player will play a game for longer. Traditionally you go from A through to Z in a straightforward playthrough of a game. However the allure of Trophies means that once you have completed a game you might play a game again on a harder lever, or with different weapons, or go in search of special items. The overall effect is that a player spends much more time with a game then they might otherwise, they will see greater value in the franchise and are more likely to buy a sequel. In fact technology research firm EEDAR found that a diversity of Achievements in Xbox 360 games led to higher review scores and stronger sales.

Platinum%20PlayStation%203%20Trophy%20-%20www.PlayThree.net.jpg

Although the Trophy system has only recently gone live, developers have had ample time to prepare as Sony announced them early last year during the big HOME reveal. Naughty Dog took the time to implement Medals, a reward system, into their game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune allowing them to easily patch the game with full Trophy support. Criterion Games took the decision to ‘lock’ game saves for Burnout Paradise to an individual PS3 user account, so that when they Trophy patch the game, it will retroactively reward players with Trophies. So for gamers who like to brag about their gaming successes, and developers who can expect increased sales this should be a win win situation right? Maybe.

Microsoft have made it mandatory for any game released on the Xbox 360 to support Achievements, Sony have certainly suggested that they will do the same. However they want to give developers a grace period; forcing them to include Trophy support without ample development time might mean they delay the PS3 version of a game, thus scoring an own goal by allowing the 360 version to have an exclusive launch window.

Inevitably this means new games are being released without Trophy support. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed doesn’t have Trophy Support. Executive Producer Haden Blackman said “we received info on Trophies far too late in development.”

Bethesda’s post Nuclear Holocaust RPG Fallout 3 will be released without Trophies despite the fact that they have planned and implemented Achievements in the 360 version. Developers on NeoGaf forums have said it should take much less than a week to convert 360 Achievements to PS3 Trophies. Whilst Microsoft have secured the rights to exclusive Fallout 3 DLC, although unlikely, it might be they paid for exclusive rewards. More likely it is just plain laziness from Bethesda. Other multi-platform games launching at the same time do include Trophies, including Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Saints Row 2 and Call of Duty: World at War.

So any game released from October onwards really should have Trophies included. Developers really have no excuse to not add them, it is a little lazy, and a little disrespectful to PlayStation 3 owners who pay the same price as 360 owners for their version of a game with a feature missing.

Until then I have to I won’t bother buying the PS3 version of a game that doesn’t have trophies. (Of course as a multiconsole owner it doesn’t preclude me from buying the 360 version!) However until Sony make Trophies mandatory in 2009 I absolutely positively have to insist to developers and publishers No Trophies = No Buy.

New slim trophycard available at Playfire.com

London based social networking site for gamers Playfire.com has today released a major update to their popular trophy card system. In the backdrop of three new trophy patches hitting the console for Warhawk, Novastrike and PAIN Playfire has created a new slim alternative (see below) that 's designed specifically for forum signature spaces and other vertically constrained areas, along with a number of new themes for both the new and original versions.

But the update doesn't stop there! In addition to the new size, the team has introduced automated level calculation based on the number & type of trophies you have (bronze, silver, gold etc) combined with a nifty progress bar representing your progress towards your next level. The interface for adding trophies has also been completely revamped, styled & simplified making adding trophies even quicker and easier than before.

In addition to the new slim widget the team has also updated their original widget with five brand new themes (see below) -- Pain, Mirror's Edge, Buzz Quiz TV, NovaStrike & PLAYSTATION 3.

And for all you budding designers out there, Playfire is now accepting theme submissions! So if you fancy submitting a new trophycard theme for the official Playfire roster, then your next step should be to download the official trophy card template here. Once you’ve polished your design to perfection you then just need to email your submission to abby [at] playfire [dot] com.
