Current Online Scenario:

Starhawk is only available as a "public" beta test right now (the private beta ended 1/3). The game will not be finished, and released, until 5/8/2012.

Entrance to the beta will be in various waves. They want to take players on slowly to test server capacity. So they will take them in waves, with the earliest waves to reward various groups of people. Who gets into the beta, and when:

  • On 1/17 all PlayStation Plus subscribers (just go download from the PSN Store), and all previous Private Beta participants (who haven't erased their original Private Beta files) (if you have an old, un-used private beta code, it is probably expired)
  • 1/31 Uncharted 3 beta key holders. These voucher codes were inside North American copies of Uncharted 3
  • 2/7: Visit GameStop and PlayStation on Facebook and see how you can get a beta voucher code
  • 2/14 Visit IGN.com to get a code
  • 2/21: Everyone with a PlayStation Network account. Everyone who wants in, gets in!

Build n ' Battle

Build n' Battle is a technology in the story and a gameplay mechanic that allows players to buy one of the variety of structures available and set it down anywhere on the battlefield in real time. The structures are selected from the structure ring and vary in purpose, costs, etc. All structures cost Rift Energy which is the in-game currency. Build n' battle allows constantly changing gameplay across the maps by allowing players to customize the battlefield and the team's tools, invoking strategies as well has developing their own unique style. Build n' Battle may have some subtle differences between how it operates in Singleplayer, co-op, or multiplayer modes. Structures will drop down from the sky and instantly crush and kill any enemy unit below it when it lands, then procedes to quickly build itself from the ground up.

In multi-player, all players can call down structures. Limits on how many stuctures can be built in the current beta is 32 structures per team. If this changes depending on the number of players is unknown that this time.

As of right now, Build n' Battle can be accessed from any vehicle.

Structure (Build):

Walls

Walls are a specific structure that can be built using the new Build n' Battle mechanic. They are used for defensive purposes. They are the cheapest structures costing only one rift energy. Infantry can fight from the top of walls on platforms that provide some cover. Automated turrets can be placed on the top and have a gate. Multiple walls can be attached side by side easily, without gaps to further increase defense.

Energy Shield

The Energy Shield is the most expensive structure in the game so far costing 8 rift energy. The Energy Shield is a large, spherical force barrier that deflects all muntions on the outside, protecting the units inside the shield. It cannot be destroyed by raw firepower, as it is invincible. The only way to destroy a bubble shield is by taking out the generator on the inside of the shield. The shield generator itself is very weak.

Beam Turrets

Beam Turrets are a specific structure in Starhawk that players can buld using the new Build n' Battle mechanic. The player can operate the turret manually, but if the player leaves the turret will operate automatically like its cheaper auto turret cousin. They are mainly anti-vehicle, attacking 4x4s and Hawks with a constant armor piercing beam, and they can attack infantry with some effectivness. They cost 6 rift energy to use.

Bunkers

Bunkers are a specific structure in Starhawk that can be built using the new build n' battle mechanic. They are a small defensive stronghold, and cost 4 rift energy. Built bunkers will spawn infantry weapons, and provide cover and protection for infantry against enemy infantry, as well as the more powerful vehicles. Bunkers have a high amount of health and are heavily armored. Bunkers spawn Kinetic Rifles, Shotguns, and Rocket Launchers.

Four auto turrets can be placed on top of the bunker. Infantry can also fight ontop of the bunker via a ladder on the inside. However, enemy infantry can also enter in the top hatch.

Razorback Garage

A Razorback garage is a specific structure in Starhawk that can be built using the new build n' battle mechanic. Razorback garages are needed to spawn Razorback combat jeeps. They are considered one of the moderately expensive structures over longer use. The Razorback garage costs 2 rifts, and prices for additional Razorback's cost 1 rift. This is subject to change in later builds.

Pod Beacon

The Pod Beacon is a unique structure than can be built using the new build n' battle mechanic. When placed, the players can spawn in a certain area around the pod beacon, essentially acting as a forward base. The pod beacon also allows the player to slowly gather rift if they are close enough.

Auto Turrets

Auto Turrets are specific structures in Starhawk that can be built using the new build n' battle mechanic. They are one of the cheapest structures in the game, costing 2 rift energy. Auto turrets are small automated sentries that track and shoot nearby infantry. They are anti-infantry only, and cannot defeat most vehicle armor. They also have a limited range and can be taken out from afar. As such they are best used in chokes and near or behind cover that limits vision.

Auto Turrets may be placed on other structures like walls or bunkers.

Rift Energy

Rift Energy is a source of energy in Starhawk that serves as both a plot device and in-game currency. The story thus far shows that rift energy is a great new energy source and is highly sought after by the Rifters. However, if one is exposed to rift energy they become the Outcast with their mind and body permutated. Thus, Rift energy is as dangerous as it is valuable.

In the game, Rift energy serves as currency to build structures on the battlefield. Rift is accumulated through killing enemy players, vehicles, structures, and completeing objectives. Players can also obtain Rift by destroying Rift Barrels or being near a Pod Beacon or Rift Collector. The teams who preform better in the game will be rewarded with rift to construct structures, to further gain an edge on the battlefield.
