Sony: We Should Probably Develop Less Games

Recommended Posts

Despite being one of the best publishers in the industry, and managing to bring out critical hit after critical hit, Sony has failed to produce huge chart-topping games like Gears of War and Halo. Outside of Gran Turismo, Sony’s IPs have yet to hit the big time, partially due to poor marketing – something that Sony’s Worldwide Studios President has taken notice of.

When questioned by GameInformer why Microsoft were able to sell just one game in 2011, Gears of War 3 (although, to be fair, they did have other games), and it still managed to sell more than all of Sony’s 2011 games combined,

Shuhei Yoshida admitted that their increased lineup stretched marketing funds and focus (emphasis added): .

It’s a combination of many things. First, we have to be very honest about our games’ quality as well. We love our games, but we can point out many issues when you look at the titles individually.[/b]

Another thing is focus. When you have ten games coming out in a year compared to two or three, how much focus you get from our business and marketing side is very hard. From a portfolio side, we were very excited about the games we had last year, but we probably diluted support for each title.

He was then asked whether Sony could end up producing less games. After talking about Sony’s love for new IPs he closed with an admission that the company should develop fewer games and support them more (emphasis added):

It’s easy to say, “Yeah, let’s make three games a year.” But game development is dynamic. You cannot plan to do that. You already have to have a certain number of games in the pipeline hoping they hit in a certain year. We love working on new IPs. It’s really hard to predict when these games get finished.

It’s a challenge, but I think we could and probably should be focused on a smaller number of titles so each one gets the best support.

With titles like The Last Guardian - which sadly is unlikely to sell well – being stuck in development for years, and games like Resistance 3 failing to pass a million sales, Sony’s plan to release a huge number of quality games doesn’t seem to be working for them. And, when you factor in the fact that Microsoft has managed to top the NPD six months running with the help of a fewer number or far higher marketed products, it’s understandable why the cash-strapped company might want to release fewer games. Unfortunately, while a drop in Sony-produced content might be good for their bank balance, it certainly isn’t good for gamers – titles like Heavy Rain and Flower would never have been funded by a different publisher.

With the PlayStation 4′s release drawing ever closer, it’ll be interesting to see which route Sony decides to adopt – tons of games, little marketing or a few games with tons of marketing. I know which one I’d prefer.

US only most likely

Uncharted 3 is 5 million +

Killxone 3 was 2 million

Lpb 2 was 1.5 million of what i know

Gear 3 is 6 million +

WW sales ^

and uncharted is still charting in europe charts and in Germany is ranked behind max payne 3 and diablo 3 only despite being 8 old month game

And The news is very old, what yoshida was saying is that releasing too many games in short span doesnt lead to proper marketing

..faltoo wali baat...Sony needs to see lot of positive points also from making so many new Ips/Games,they may have not been huge selling titles but most of them have been critically well received by both fans and media. Many of these titles add to their handheld library also and when their next gen comes out, these already popular games will help in draw lot of existing fans to it as well.

Btw its not like almost all of those games sold poorly,GT5 sold over 8 million,UC series did about 10-13 million .

Yea Usa is their only big market otherwise every where Microsoft is behind Sony. Also In USA only xbox 360 is reported to be used more as media tv player than gaming console that pretty much shows the lack of games could do the console . It is possible that Gears and Halo selling so much is a reason that lack of many other titles ,make these existing xbox owners to rely on these few titles only and hence they sell extraordinarily well.

Well; hard to disagree to a certain extent....If Sony has paced their exclusive pushes uniformly since console launch, things would have been a lot better. Also, games like GT5/TLG don't help because they are key titles that are delayed beyond patience, and don't have the desired impact. If GT5 had release between forza 2 and 3, it would have been an instant hit, but by the time it came out, Forza had saturated the market

Well then why is the XBOX selling better than PS3 in US if the gamers find it to have lack of exclusives. And Gears 3 has sold better than UC3 and KZ3 combined in Global Sales.Gears and Halo are selling because of their Co-Op and Multiplayer capabilities which none of the PS3 Exclusives offer.

If the title is not good people wont buy it even if it is an exclusive. The entertainment factor doesnt show lack of games but the exciting services they showcast in the US.Heck in 2008 it was stated that 40% of PS3 owners just bought it as a standalone BluRay player.

Its US only and Gears 3 has sold 7 Million Units and UC3 has sold just 4.2 million Units

uc3 is more then 4.2.

Uncharted 1 was 3 million

Uncharted 2 was 6+

The uncharted series has sold 17 million in the last news

Uncharted 3 must be 6+ easily by now since it sells a lot in europe

uncharted GA must be 1 million

In US people play where their friends are and also live > psn a reason why games sell more on xbox in genreal.

UC3 has a really good mp and is a better game then gears imo

Cheeky bastard.

Seriously though, Sony cant start making less games. People need those games to win forum wars by making lists.
