This War Of Mine provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle. For the very first time you do not play as an elite soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout. At night you get a chance to scavenge nearby locations for items that will help you stay alive.

Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them to endure the hardships. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival. The sooner you realize that, the better.

In This War of Mine, the focus is shifted away from military operations portrayed in most games. Instead, it is a dark survival game where you control a group of civilians trying to stay alive in a besieged city. Your task is simple: survive.

During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, offering precious time to craft, trade, upgrade your shelter, feed and cure your survivors. At night you can scavenge nearby areas in search for food, medicines, weapons and other useful items.

This War of Mine was inspired by real-life events and delivers a message: “This can happen in your city, in your country.” Here's what our lead designer, Michal Drozdowski, had to say: “While designing a new game, we came across an article that described how one man survived in a besieged city. We learned about his hardships and the horror of that experience. We decided to work around this idea and make something real, something that moves people and makes them stop think for a second. It's about time that games, just like any other art form, start talking about important things.”

In TWoM you have to make life-and-death decisions based purely on your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them in order to prevail; there are no good or bad decisions during war. There's only survival.

A very interesting concept, but never going to be mainstream and no assurance that it will be fun.

People like being in a position of power in Video Games, this might not be enjoyable at all.

The trailer is so good. Movie quality

Won't be surprised if it is in line with their other works and takes a 2.5D isometric approach / top-down UI based game-play.

Ever heard of survival-horror?

I won't compare this to survival-horror per-se.

A better comparison would be games like Rust, DayZ and so on with a story mode attached (with a lot of checks, balances) and minus the online interactivity bit.

I wasn't comparing this game to survival-horror.

I was just reminding Sackboy that there's a whole genre of video games where people are not in a position of power.

Its intrigue , chills/thrills. There is a whole comedy related genre too but in RTSs especially you want to be in a position of power.

RTSs about survival don't do very well, you need to allow growth.

Its a really hard concept to pull off.

I guess they should also give 20% of $ to Sony or ms for releasing on consoles(Not sure if it applies to indie games also..)

That is licensing fees, plus extra for every patch push out. And yes it applies to indie developers.

only MS charged for patching games. there was a huge thread about it long back here (fez related) and there were actually some people who defended that sh*t. ironically those guys are either MIA from the gaming threads or became quasi PC gamers only to crawl from their holes every now and then.

MS also has a platform parity clause which is the reason why most actually of the indies went ahead and signed exclusive deal with sony.
