Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth will propel the development of human civilization beyond the traditional timeline of a Civilization game, by exploring humanity’s future on an alien world. For the first time, players will lead factions divided by contrasting cultures and evolve their new civilizations to reflect their chosen destiny. Players will experience an array of new gameplay possibilities, including nonlinear technological progression, deeper customization of chosen factions, and an entire alien world that will change the very identity of each faction based on their choices.

Seed the Adventure: Players will establish a cultural identity, select a leader and sponsor an expedition by assembling the spacecraft, cargo and colonists through a series of choices that directly impact starting conditions when arriving on the new alien planet.

Alien World: Exploring the benefits and dangers of a new planet filled with dangerous terrain, mystical resources and hostile lifeforms unlike those of Earth, players will build outposts, unearth ancient alien relics, tame new forms of life, develop flourishing cities and establish trade routes to create prosperity for their people.

New Technology Web: Reflecting forward progress in an uncertain future, technology advancement will occur through a series of nonlinear choices that affect the development of mankind. The tech web is organized around three broad themes, each with a distinct victory condition.

New Quest System: Quests are infused with fiction about the planet, and will help guide players through a series of side missions that will aid in the collection of resources, upgrading units, and advancing through the game.

New Orbital Layer: Players will build and deploy advanced military, economic and scientific satellites that provide strategic offensive, defensive and support capabilities from orbit.

#7 The African Union faction in Beyond Earth behaves a lot like Civ V‘s Shoshone, expanding and grabbing territory early and then fiercely defending it.

 

#6 Siege Worms are powerful alien units that you won’t be able to dispatch during the early stages of the game, and their travels through the Earth can lead to the destruction of tile improvements.

 

#5 Many areas of the planet will begin the game covered by a green mist that will damage your units…but dedicating yourself to the Harmony Affinity can allow you to research technologies that mean the mists heal your forces instead.

 

#4 The full-body animated leaders will change visually depending on what Affinity they are pursuing, with Purity leaders beginning to wear clothing with classical Roman influences.

 

#3 Affinities aren’t selected in the same way as social policies or religions in previous Civilization titles. Instead Affinities develop naturally as the result of many choices made over the course of a game.

 

#2 The Virtues system allows players to pursue victory in different ways, even when they have the same Affinity. Combining Supremacy with the Might and Knowledge Virtues can make you a technological military powerhouse, while Supremacy plus Industry and Prosperity will crank up the production of your cities.

My city was surrounded by green foggy hexes - called miasma - which is some pretty nasty alien . If a unit ends its turn in a hex with miasma, it will take damage. Miasma also diminishes the resources you can gain from the terrain, and prevents improvements from being built on the hex. You can't remove miasma until you get the requisite technology, so it will be an early nuisance for sure but it's possible you could use it to your advantage in the late stages. Think of miasma as analogous to the xenofungus from Alpha Centauri.

The random nature of the quests seems like it could backfire, but the designers had already thought of that. The game AI is smart enough to see which way you are leaning, and offer quests and storytelling moments which reflect your choices to give you the opportunity to fully embrace an affinity. Once you go Harmony or Purity or Supremacy, the architecture of your cities and buildings changes, and the appearance of your units might also be altered so there is visual feedback as well. Of course, there will be special units and powerful wonders only open to specific affinities.

It was time to found my first city, so I calmly built a settler and made my way south. Once at my location, I pressed "B" to give the age-old command to found city. But here's the catch, the city (or outpost as it's called in Beyond Earth) didn't get founded immediately. Each turn, a new hex joined the city's working radius until it finally was founded 6 turns in. This delayed founding of settlements can be used to my advantage in war, as an incomplete outpost isn't yet owned by its faction. That means you can attack them with impunity! File that one for future backstabbings.

Before long, massive siege worms appeared that looked straight outta Dune. When you first see these beasts, a quest pops up asking you to kill one of them. After attacking with ranged fire from two units, my city, and two melee soldiers, I finally destroyed a siege worm and got a big pile of science points for my efforts. Those points can go towards researching better technology to upgrade my armies, thereby ensuring a pure offensive strategy is extremely viable in Beyond Earth.

CIVILIZATION: BEYOND EARTH release date reveal

Firaxis' forward-looking Civ will take players to the stars this October 27th. To celebrate the new count-down, 2K have released footage from an E3 demo of the game.

 

Now that you know when Beyond Earth is being released, Firaxis have also announced what you'll get for buying it before that date. Pre-orderers will get the Exoplanets Map Pack, a DLC mini-drop "inspired by real exoplanets". Here's what's inside:

  • "Kepler 186f: This lush forest planet is one of the oldest known Earth-like planets;
  • "Rigil Khantoris Bb: Orbiting the closest star to our solar system, the historical records of this arid continental planet's settlement are well-preserved;
  • "Tau Ceti d: This planet of seas and archipelagos features a booming biodiversity and a wealth of resources;
  • "Mu Arae f: Tidally locked in orbit around a weak star, the southern hemisphere of this planet is a blistering desert where the sun never sets, while the northern hemisphere is perpetually in frozen darkness;
  • "82 Eridani e: An alien world of scarce water and wracked by tectonic forces;
  • "Eta Vulpeculae b: A mysterious new discovery with unknown terrain."

RPS: Hands-On: Civilization – Beyond Earth

 

 

 

Until I’ve experienced the mid- and late-game, it’s impossible to say whether the game will retain the tension and surprise of these early hours, but it’s a pleasing start. Importantly, there’s enough shown in those beginnings to leave my mind full of imagined tactics and strategies a week after playing. Beyond Earth presents a lot of information but all of it feeds back into the basics of the design – management of resources and space. Easy enough to grasp, but with so many new permutations, mastering it might be as tricky as holding onto a siege worm.
