KP says Cook can break Sachin tendulkar's record.

www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/story/645433.html

Of course he means test. Now if we can put rabid fanboyism and all around daftness aside to actually discuss this, it is actually a very interesting statement.

Among current players Cook certainly seems the one to break sachin's test statistics- both runs and centuries. Cook certainly has the ability and he plays as opener (thus max game time). If he can stay fit without major drops in form it is quite possible. England play the maximum no. of tests amomgst all countries, so that works in his favor. Although, the no of tests played all around is on decline so you never know.

One big advantage that sachin had is that he started playing at 16 yrs. Cook made his debut at 21 so those 5 yrs of cushion he doesnt have. That is one reason why i think only some one who starts playing in his mid teens (with ability obviously) can break the record, but still... thats an advantage, not a necessary pre condition. If cook keeps up at 50, his current avg, per innings (not bloated by not outs) and play 10-12 tests an year in 7-8 years he will clear it. He is 28 yrs as of now.

^^Yep. Around ~2500 runs difference..

(was expecting Ponting to break Sachin's records, too bad he retired.)

Edit: Amla is around 30 and still need 10000+ runs to break Sachin's record.

At current average (with 12 matches/year for 10 years), he'll be still 4000 runs short.

A player does not play in the same manner throughout his career. There is bound to be rough patch at some point of time. Ricky Ponting came close but in the f** end, he faltered. Kallis won't be able to do it coz of the age factor, but imo tendulkar may be a better batsman but kallis is the best wholesome cricket player of forever.

Kallis has got maybe 2 years more in him.. I don't see him continuing after WC 2015. He will be 37-38 then. Sachin might play a series or two more in the coming season before he's done.

And going by current form, Sachin is scoring nothing these days.. So very likely that Kallis might break the magical no 51

Cook I doubt because I don't think he'll maintain the same level of fitness throughout.. Might cross ponting and def gavaskar

Even KP was going strong most poeple thought even he'll compete with Sachin..
Even Ponting...

Every good player will have a purple patch in his career..Cook is having one right now...

Whats amazing about Sachin is his ability to come back strong..

When he had Tennis Elbow , Even he was'nt sure if he's gonna come back and play cricket..He came back and was as good as he was before...

During 2003 Aussie tour he was in terrible form , even the series before that..Hardly got any runs..

But In 2004 , for like 3 or 4 test matches he dint even get out and scored tons of runs that year..

Again in 2007 everyone said he's finished and cant compete any more...
We all know what happened after that...

Cook , He'll hit a rough patch or an injury..

We'll see how hard he'll come back...

KP when out of form took more than an year to get a century...

Yeah true. Current record might look great for Cook, but who knows about future. Pressure of captaincy can also get to him.

Great thing about Sachin was that he hardly hit a major rough patch in almost 90% of his long career.

there may be rough patches sure and no player plays in the same-ish manner through out, but it works the other way too. Cook can hit more amazing form than what he has now. His current avg is shade under 50 and he can go till 55-58 in coming few years (not over all avg but avg in just those 4-5 years) thereby hitting the prime. It is almost as probable as people just throwing the idea of a player hitting a slump abjectly. As good as his last 3 years have been, he can still scale higher heights. England in test cricket are the best in the world as of now, and that gives him the support to assert dominance, most notably support from the bowlers. His bowlers make sure that he doesnt have to bat under pressure, thereby freeing his mind. If India had a good bowling unit, or even a decent support batting cast in the 90s, Tendulkar would have scored more as he would not have had to do the 'last stand' act ever so often.

Generally a batsman's prime years come in the period between 27-33 when he is experienced, yet relatively young. Cook is at the best stage to launch himself further and he has a very good team around him to allow that.

As for health issues, i dont recall any time Cook has been out for a long period or him suffering any major injury al all in his 7+ year old career (could be wrong, someone correct me if that is the case).

-----------------------------------

Agreed with Kallis being better cricketer than anyone else, even tendulkar. His record with both bat and ball is phenomenal, even when looked individually; but when you combine them, it is just :majesty: :majesty:

People tend to forget cricket is not only about batting. Shame.

Sachin has played for 20 years, that is the primary reason he has that kind of record, genius is usually short lived but this one has survived

I see no one breaking his record in tests, it is really early to call on Cook, I thought Ponting came pretty close at some time, I remember a time when he was scoring a 100 almost every third or fourth innings for like a year.

It will be really tough to break such a record, the time required is absolutely too much

Edit: Oh and Kallis, he is the best cricketer of our generation by miles, nobody can touch him, don't forget to add his fielding to his batting and bowling.
