But all in all nikon lenses are of better quality and nikon has better battery life ..

you cant go wrong with either but D5100 is more VFM as it shares the sensor with its older sibling D7000 which is really good ..

Get that for 35k and try getting 55-300mm(320$ or Rs. 18500 ) or 70-300mm ( much better and 500$ and Rs. 35000 ) if zoom is your thing but if you want crazy macros go for 35mm AF-S lens ( its only 200$) or if you auto focus doesnt matter that much 50mm AF (100$)

Was thinking more on what Anshul said, i.e. 18-105 lens (will give a wide angle shot and some zoom as well). Then spend the rest on a macro lens.

 D7000>>D5100 600D

@Sackboy: Nikon 35mm 1.8 is not a macro lens. The 45mm and 60mm 2.8 G are macro. You can even consider the Tamron 90mm 2.8 :exoticdance::sign_offtopic:

Nice pics.

But D7k is a lot costlier than D5.1k.

Any inputs on the macro lens prices ?

Also any ideas where to get the cams from ? Zoomin/FK etc ? Both of the sites don't have much to offer apart from standard 18-55 kit lens. Does it make any sense in buying the camera from the grey market (considering I might end up saving 9-10k) ?

Buying a camera from Grey market is a no no for me unless he takes up the service at his own expense, because these gears are meant to be handled rough and you always end up taking it to a service station every other trip.

About the lenses, if you are starting photography now, i honestly suggest you to go with the 18-55 kit lens and a zoom lens like 55-250 or 55-300 which is relatively cheap considering other lens prices. These lenses are also remarkable lenses and still after 1 year and some 2000 photos, you feel that you can do better with a prime lens or a macro, i would then suggest you to think about other lenses. If you are a starter, buy a nice gear and some basic lenses and learn the tips and tricks of photography, then settle down for a professional lens by which you would have learned to maintain a lens :)

Just my thoughts on it :hypocrite:

^^ Thanks for the input bro.

Used a D3100 today again with a 50mm prime lens and even though images look super clean on the LCD, you can see blurries when viewing them on a laptop screen. So yeah, need to study more into it.

Also, one of my prime uses will be macro photography, so :|

Nearly decided on D5100 but the lens prices are bloody atrocious when compared to Canon !

D3100 shows blurrieness o.O bro that has to be a fault of the pictures, it might be one of the cheapest DSLRs but there is no blurriness even in that. You only see the difference at very high zoom.

Unless you were using high IDO settings

Like Sacky said, do check the picture itself by full zoom in your camera. Often we see just the zoom off image and think that the picture might be sharp, but on full zoom in your camera screen will show you if it is a sharp pic or not. Placing in the PC and checking comes next ;)

Get the D5100 with your eyes closed :hypocrite:D5100 vs D3100

Did you manually focus with the 50mm ? What settings did you use?? Since it's a prime lens, you get more light so the DOF is pretty shallow. I use the liveview function for manual focus(love my 50mm) :dog: Images are pretty sharp :P

For macro lens, you can also consider the Nikon 105mm f/2.8  Budget?
