Ubisoft boss says next-gen platforms are 'coming soon'

Sony and Microsoft will roll out their next-generation consoles a lot sooner than anticipated, according to Ubisoft big cheese Yves Guillemot.

Apparently we’ve Nintendo to thank for it too, as Guillemot believes that the arrival of Wii U next year will put pressure on the competition to make the transition to next-gen earlier than they had hoped for.

“I think it’s sending the message that the new transition is going to happen – and we’re going to have new machines coming soon,” he told Gamasutra.

Furthermore, the executive pledged that Ubisoft will continue to support new consoles at launch, as it plans to do with Wii U and has previously done with Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.

"We’re going to continue to take this approach,” said Guillemot. “We feel this console is coming with very innovative features that will change the video game industry and we want to be a part of that.”

'Definitely life left in PS3, 360,' says Far Cry 3 dev

Ubisoft says it wants to make sure it really pushes the boundaries on every platform Far Cry 3 is released for.

Somewhat at odds with Ubisoft CEO's calls for next-gen hardware, lead game designer Jamie Keen argues there's "definitely life in the current-gen consoles".

"We were very lucky with our engine in that we went through a lot of the things we had to work out in regards to consoles previously on Far Cry 2. That technical knowledge and expertise is really serving us well now.

If a 6 year old console can run a game like gow 3, then dev\'s are oblivious, and incompetent. Most of the hardwares capability goes unused most of the time due to incompetence, and short cuts taken early in the products life cycle.

Freaking finally. There were too many threads poping up all over the place. Half the threads on the front page of the news section are next gen related.

Anyway, EG have a nice article on what to expect from next gen.

the article is more like a CryEngine 3 show off

was wondering though on how could they be sure that their engine will work and nicely at that, without having the exact knowledge of the hardware of next platforms

something is fishy there or they are plain boasting

I think its pretty much safe to say that Crytek would have very good knowledge of whats to come with next gen. At least on the 360 side. They are already rumored to be working on Timesplitters for the next Xbox, so if anyone would know its them.

Ditto for Epic and Mark Rien. UE3 has been ubiquitous this gen, chances are it will be the same next gen for UE4. Both Sony and MS would want to work closely with them as well.
