Kojima to leave Konami after MGS 5

He'll probably leave the industry and move towards movie making. In a Game Informer article he clearly said he doesn't feel close to other developers save for Platinum and a few indie devs. He's more comfortable with other movie directors than his fellow developers in Japan or elsewhere.

Kojima’s rumored departure might hurt Metal Gear, Silent Hills, but consoles aren’t Konami’s focus anymore

getting rid of Kojima Productions is not that crazy for Konami. The company, like nearly every publisher in Japan, has shifted away from triple-A console games that cost millions of dollars to produce. Instead, Konami Digital Entertainment is embracing mobile games.

During the company’s last financial quarterly report in February, the publisher revealed the games it has in the works for its current pipeline. Only two, Metal Gear Solid V and Pro Evolution Soccer, were in development for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Compare that to five mobile games and six for arcades.

Konami is just not that into making console games.

Konami also has wider interests. While Konami Digital Entertainment, its gaming division, makes the most revenue, the company generates nearly just as much from health-and-fitness related products. The company is also seeing consistent growth from its casino-gaming division and pachinko-machine division.

The casino business is growing especially well for Konami.

The company’s fiscal year ends March 31, and by then it expects to have generated more than $860 million in revenue from video games and $248 million from casino games. But when it comes to operating income, that $860 million from games is only expected to generated $82 million in profits. Casino products, however, on much less revenue, is expected to bring in $58 million in profits.

If Konami is getting cost conscious — if it is paying attention to margins — it could easily make sense for it to stop putting so much upfront money into massive projects like Metal Gear Solid games. Instead, it could break up that budget and throw it at dozens of mobile games while trying to get more from its casino attractions.

Pretty stupid of Konami for not being able to keep a lid on this till MGS5 launched. It is definitely going to impact the launch of their biggest game in a while.

Also, Kojima will be a terrible filmmaker. Should stick to making games

How can you say that ??

All mgs series had awesome stories!!

Cutscenes in mgs are directed better than most of the hollywood action movies out there.

But still making live action film is lot different from directing cutscenes. I don't think he can take up that task at this age without much experience. It takes a few years just to know all the elements in making films, let alone directly jumping into film directing.

I would not say that. All games do have a fantastic arc(start and finish) but some of the stuff in the middle is filler (for non mgs fans).

Kojima's direction struggles whenever it comes to the talky portions in the games, its stretched and he over indulgences himself a lot of time going into the minutest of details and laying it all out at once and leaving nothing to the players imagination. All His mgs scripts too have a common theme, it all goes "you've been played all along/everything was planned" theme every single game. Fans will love it but new players will be starching their head esp in mgs 4 where there was around 2+ hrs of cutscenes where they're just sitting on the plane and talking to each other. Another problem he faces is the translation, his scripts, dialogue's and names are in japanese and sometime they dont make any sense in english. The humor in his games is also something that will always divide opinions esp given how serious some of the themes.

Come action scenes and kojima is head and shoulders above everyone in gaming right now and as good as some film directors. The way he frames his shots, the interaction of the characters, the music, camera work etc is all top notch and a sign of a man who knows his stuff. The introduction of snake in all 4 games is just one example on how good he can get. Everytime we thought that he couldn't top it, he does exactly that.

Im very curious too what he does with mgs5 as he said its going to be a departure from his normal style of cutscenes with long one take styled cutscenes throughout the game. Ground zeroes has just one cut throughout the entire game. If the red band and last years trailer are any indication then its going to be one amazing game.

This could work out well. Get kojima's sh*t tastic writing off MGS and there is a half decent game somewhere in there.

I think in a way its good news, gives the guy some new ideas to experiment and make new games .... and honestly speaking new IP's are badly needed NOW !

This might be the case, but that is not the point. The point is the way Kojima has been treated. He was the one who gave them one of their most major franchises (their only major franchise in some years) and Konami have literally spat on his work by removing his name from all promotion materials in MGSV. They have also revealed they are hiring a new team for a new MGS within less than a day of news of his departure. This thing is very bad PR for Konami and plenty of forums are already exploding over it. This PR is what will affect Konami's profits.

@KC

For me most of his games plays like movies with detailed features of everything.Downside confusing story for newcomers.

But yes there were too much cut-scenes on MGS4.Btw it took the game to a new level of awesomeness showing detailed chemistry between Npcs. Also he actually included a playable PS1 level in a flash back to show how much the game looks realistic instead depending on pre rendered cut scenes .

But this will nor effect his career for a filmmaker.Like you said the guy knows how to handle things. So even if there is some choppy or clumsy story dialogues in between ,I think no one will mind as long as the ending is good. :)

Plus Kojima is not Nolan. :P
