Bringing Iphone from US to India

Recommended Posts

Ummm, i could not find satisfactory answers for this question anywhere , so am posting it here :0
Iphones in the us are really cheap and there are 100$ delas with contracts and stuf. So if i buy an iphone on contract and bring it to india and get it unlocked here , will it work?
What are the custom charges and do the custom people allow it? I heard that as long as it is not packed and you bring it like its your own iphone and you are using it , then they do nothing !
Whats the cost and stuff?
 Please answer ASAP

Yes, you will be able to buy the phone in the US and get it unlocked in India, however, remember that the 'contract' has a 2 year term, so your friend or whoever it is in the US that signed the contract will have to pay the monthly plan (data and minutes) for the next 2 years. AT&T won't just let you (a tourist) go buy an iPhone under contract and leave. They require a background check using your social security number. If you have someone in the US willing to take the phone on contract and give it to you, then good :good:

I've carried a couple of new phones with me when I've traveled to India and never really had any trouble, but I suppose it would be a good idea to at least to take it out of the box and sorta make it appear like you're just carrying an old phone.

Ummm, and how much is the monthly charge? And how do you bring it,do you pay the full charge for two years? Plus i heard that the companies can break your contract if you pay them some money which is done legally!

Do you know the charges for theat?

The monthly charge (at least for me) is around $70, and if you wanna break the contract, it'll end up costing you almost as much as buying an unlocked phone. Check this link for their termination fees.

The last time I brought a couple of phones to India, I bought them unlocked (at $650 or something).

^^ Sorry to have burst your bubble. The $200 price of the iPhone in the US, is because the carriers subsidize the price for your, assuming you'll stay with them for 2 years (so they can make money off of you for the next 2 years on talk and data charges). You can't really expect them to subsidize the phone by around $450 just for you to run away to India :fear:

There are some loopholes to this, and I've heard of people taking the phone on contract and using insurance to claim that you lost the phone or something, but I don't know how that works, and wouldn't try it anyway :fear:

The cheapest iPhones are the ones that are bought on contract and then reported stolen to retrieve a new one. This involves considerable risk but has been done. The thing is, so many people have done it already (Indians mostly / only?) that there might be a few checks in place already.

My friend got one such device from someone coming down from UK. He paid 25k for an iPhone 4 which was 35k at the time and hadn't released in India. However his phone could not be unlocked for an entire year, so basically he had an iPod in the shape of an Iphone for an entire year. Of course considering it is an iPhone and not Android, luckily he still is using it.

The above given method may not work on this day and is illegal too. In fact, stealing an iphone is the cheapest, if you are going to think of the above example to be a good one.

---

The cheapest legal way of getting an iphone is to buy it from US and get someone to carry it again. But this is again illegal since you will not be paying customs duty on it and evading it by giving excuses (if asked). But it is so common place that it is considered legal.

The only legal way and the most expensive one is to buy it locally.

Sorry for the late reply anant.

My brother was in the states during black Friday week. Got an unlocked phone.

To answer some of your queries :

1. Customs has no issues as they can't see it. Regardless, it's too puny for them to bother. Also carry a cut simple & you can say it's an old phone.

2.no clue about unlocking here. Pretty sure you can get itddone though.

3.lots of people get it. Chill :-)
