Valve working on 'Steam Box' gaming console!

Recommended Posts

Valve has no plans for a game console any time soon

Valve has told Kotaku it doesn’t plan on creating a console any time soon, as its first step is getting Big Picture Mode out for Steam.

“We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on,” said Valve’s Doug Lombardi. “We’re also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we’ve talked about a fair amount.

“All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.”

Piston living room PC available for pre-order; prices start at $999

Xi3 Piston consoles will be full upgradable

Piston, Xi3's Steam supported living room PC, is now available for pre-order, and will ship later this year.

Pre-orders opened at the SXSW Gaming Expo and are now available on the
company's official website, where a $100 discount is available until
March 17.

The Piston is available in three varieties: the standard retails for $1,000 and
comes with 128gb internal SSD. 256gb and 512gb SSD units cost $1,340 and
$1,750 respectively. The Piston boasts 8gb RAM and a 3.2Ghz Quad Core
(R464) processor.

According to Xi3 president and founder Jason A. Sullivan, the early
pre-orders are the result of high demand. "Given the amount of awards,
media attention and gamer interest the Piston console has generated
since it was unveiled at CES 2013 in January, we've become seriously
concerned that we will not be able to meet the demand for Piston
consoles this year," he said.

Piston will ship in the 2013 holiday season. Following its unveiling
in January, Gabe Newell of Valve confirmed the company will release its
own living room PC in the form of the Steam Box, despite Valve having invested in Project Piston.

Isn't that a bit overpriced for a machine with a 7660G in it? :|

SSD, wonder which one, that they are demanding an arm and leg for.

Anyone know what processor it is, R464?

 Who said it's Steam Box? It has no Valve branding or any official announcement.

It's simply a small form factor PC which Xi3 have named "Piston" and combined with some carefully worded press releases, some people are for some reason thinking it's a "Steambox".
Xi3′s PISTON Console is the first unoffical “Steam Box” to be announced

Gabe said somewhere that they were facing heating and noise issues. How is it up for pre-order?

It's not a Steam Box, just a 'media' PC that 'supports' Steam.
