Producer - Crowd Funded / Chris Roberts

Developer - Chris Roberts (Cloud Imperium Games Corporation)

Platforms - PC

Website - http://starcitizen.r...industries.com/

Game Engine: Cry Engine 3

Launch Date:

.. after being in development for 12 months, is still about two years away from launch.

Business Model:

There will not be a subscription fee, and the game itself can be purchased like your typical game for a one-time fee. However, on top of that, you'll be able to spend money on various in-game items, including cosmetic items for your ship. The easiest, most recent comparison for this would be Guild Wars 2: you buy a copy and can play for free forever, but certain, optional things cost real-world money. This could be a sticking point for some, as many gamers have taken issue with games that nickel-and-dime their players.

Snippets About the Game >>

Star Citizen appears to be a mashup of Wing Commander, Privateer, and FreeLancer), crowdfunding is currently being used to help fund the game. Rather than use Kickstarter, Cloud Imperium has a website set up to take pledges.

the game is being developed only for PCs, allowing it to take full advantage of the type of high-end hardware only they can provide -- will be up to snuff. From the detail of the cockpit to the minor details on the outside of an enormous carrier

Star Citizen is divided into two parts. There is the open-world, online portion, and the single-player campaign. The latter is, somewhat confusingly, referred to by a separate name: Squadron 42. In it, you'll tackle branching missions in a more traditional, Wing Commander-like style, with the option of having friends join you online for cooperative action. This campaign can lead to accessing the open-world stuff, or you can decide to jump right into that from the start. If and when you do go the open-world route, you're free to choose to focus on something outside the confines of the military like, say, being a merchant, essentially playing the role players filled in Wing Commander: Privateer.

One of the benefits of Star Citizen's open world is that it will be populated not by NPCs, but other players. While a police force does exist, that won't prevent players from having the freedom to attack each other at their behest; this will be a particularly big concern in areas which are not heavily policed.

players' actions impacting the in-game universe, one small example being the way a newly discovered system can be named after the first player to stumble across it.
That may sound like an event that will unfold only a handful of times -- unless systems are procedurally generated (which they are not), there are only so many systems to be discovered for the first time. The content Star Citizen ships with, though, will not reflect the amount it contains in the weeks, months, and years following its launch. Roberts says the plan is to provide content updates on a regular basis -- he specifically mentions the potential to see a new system every week or two, rather than every year.

It's remarkable to think about how big the game could become. Even from the start, it sounds as if it will be enormous. In addition to being able to navigate the universe in your spaceship, you'll also be able to get out and wander around larger ships on-foot. Roberts even told IGN there are plans to allow one player to pilot a ship while the other shoots from a turret. If the battle goes south, the ship could be boarded, in which case players would be faced with dealing with the invaders from the perspective of a first-person shooter.

Star Citizen passes $10m raised mark

Number one crowd funded project of all time.

Star Citizen, the crowd funded space trading and combat sim from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, has passed the $10 million raised mark.

At the time of publication it had raised an incredible $10,662,857, a few hundred thousand dollars more than Pebble, the E-Paper Watch for iPhone and Android that raised $10,266,845 on Kickstarter.

Star Citizen’s first playable module arrives with backers next week

Star Citizen backers are going to get their first taste of the game next week. Not that they’ll be chomping on a large slice of galactic adventure, or even chewing a section of slowly roasted ship combat. Instead, they’ll get to nibble tenderly at the hangar module – the first amuse-bouche that will eventually grow into a full space sim meal. Is it lunchtime yet?

The hangar module is a basic, and early, segment of the game – letting backers create an avatar and wander around, looking longingly at their pledge reward ships. You’ll be able to open the doors, and clamber inside, but not actually fly the things. That part of the game isn’t ready yet.

Extra features will be added to the hangar over the coming months, including customisation options and the ability to invite friends. Cloud Imperium are also planning to release a dogfighting module before the end of the year, giving players their first chance to fly the ships.

Chris Roberts’ recently told Eurogamer that he is no longer seeking private funding for the game. “I’m actually not taking money from investors now,” he said in an interview. “The budget for what we’re delivering is about $20 million, and we’re almost there – we’ll probably be there before the end of the year.” Given that the game has currently raised $16 million purely through crowdfunding, he’s probably not wrong.

The hangar module will release next Thursday, August 29th.

Breaching the $20 million funding mark, STAR CITIZEN to feature planet-side FPS combat

It’s especially fitting to me that we reach this goal today, on the anniversary of the release of the original Wing Commander. Thanks to the support of this incredible community, Star Citizen embodies everything I dreamed of doing with that series, and opens up the potential for so much more. Each of you has helped to make this possible and you are allowing us to create a game the way games should be created.
