The Witcher 3 preview

Four quest designers worked on the original Witcher. Its more refined sequel had six. The conclusion to the trilogy, which promises 100 hours of content and a 50-hour story, has more than doubled that. “We have about 14, I think,” says lead quest designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz.

Nor have CD Projekt Red simply padded out The Witcher 3’s Skyrim-exceeding open world with unimaginative busywork. They’ve systematically banished fetch quests from the game—or, at least, as much as a team can when making a high-fantasy RPG. It’s one of the ways the Polish developers are refining their identity through the creation of The Witcher 3, where quest and narrative design is being meticulously worked and reworked right up until release. The philosophy is, if you need to have a fetch quest, make sure the story does a damn good job of hiding it.

The reason for abolishing fetch quests? CD Projekt Red don’t like them much either. “We are trying very hard to limit such interactions of structures to a minimum because we don’t think they’re interesting.” Instead, they want to be radical.

The studio’s ambition is to further the RPG on all fronts – from big, sprawling decisions that impact the world to the very basic principle of handing an item from one NPC to another. It’s a sign that The Witcher 3 could complete the developers’ ongoing evolution from rough RPG debutantes to best-in-class.

Mateusz and Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, lead quest designer and game director respectively, list various types of open-world game, including GTA-style sandbox titles, before explaining why Piranha Bytes’ Gothic series is the most apt comparison. It’s most similar to our game, I think,” Mateusz says. “A quite perfect combination of storyline and freedom in the open world. It’s quite similar, the Gothic series, in terms of quest design and how we organise the story, but our game has a very, very big landscape and Gothic locations were open world on a smaller scale,” Konrad finishes.

We’ve written about the size of The Witcher 3’s open world in past issues, but it’s the detail of that landscape more than the scale that feels unprecedented. Individual blades of grass swaying in the wind, the animation quality of the creatures that bound at Geralt in battle, the sparks flying from his hand during a fire spell and the time-lapse effect of dramatic skies tearing over the monster-killer as he meditates. A lesser PC stands no chance here, and it’s not just pretty effects that make The Witcher’s world so enticing. The way the game’s three regions are shaped by various portions of European mythology and history promise a coherent but still unusual dark fantasy world.

The Novigrad canals are a nest of monsters and all the filth that the city wants to hide underneath its streets. Being an ancient construct built on the ruins of old elven settlements, only the bravest (or the foolish) dare to descent there. Don’t go there unless you have a pretty damn good reason!

EDIT: Added details.

We are thrilled to unveil the new logo of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Putting the titular Wild Hunt in its centre, the new logo casts the spotlight on the mask of one of its ominous leaders—general Eredin.

The Wild Hunt has always been thought to presage war, great plagues and death. Their origin unknown, these ghastly riders instilled fear in the hearts of men and are believed to be able to steal people’s spirits that would later join the ghastly cavalcade. They come at night, in the winter and their appearance is always preceded by the aurora borealis.

In The Witcher 3, the Wild Hunt are not mere bosses at the end of a corridor. They’re part of the lore, part of the system of folk beliefs, they’re both something that children say stories about to scare each other and an entity that can wipe out entire villages in one night. The Wild Hunt is essential to the whole Witcher universe and in The Witcher 3 it will finally take center stage.

The ones who command the Hunt remain a mystery even bigger than the Hunt itself. Their number and purpose are shrouded with mystery, their cold steel however is not—many have witnessed the Hunt’s atrocities, almost none survived to tell the tale.

More information about the game and the Wild Hunt is planned to be released soon. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is scheduled for release on Xbox One, PlayStation®4 and PC in February, 2015.

New CD Projekt RED logo!

4vgSVvp.png

Established in 2002, located in Warsaw (HQ) and Kraków, Poland, CD Projekt RED was born out of raw passion to video games. The studio’s founders--Michał Kiciński and Marcin Iwiński, both pioneers in video game distribution in Poland in the 90s, decided to employ their gaming industry experience in video game development. A lot of time has passed since 2002, and the studio’s logo remained mostly untouched. Until today.

The new logo is a combination of energy and passion for game-making the studio is known for. This is how Adam Badowski, CD Projekt RED’s Head of Studio, sees the change:

We are rebels and rebels are free. Just like birds. The Northern Cardinal is what we see ourselves in the industry: intrepid, bold and confident; flying high and aiming even higher. The colour, cardinal RED, is something that connects it with another bird, a mythological creature close to our cultural roots and heritage--the Raróg, a small firebird believed to bring luck to people. RED stands for energy, the inner fire that drives us; it represents something very close to everyone here in the studio--the creativity and passion we harness from within ourselves to make the best RPGs in the world.

Starting May 14th, the Cardinal logo will become the new, official logo of CD Projekt RED--it will accompany all official assets and will form the core of the studio’s visual identification.

It's just the styling of game title (which looks cool imo), the wolf medallion will always be Geralt's symbol.

I was referring to the CD PROJEKT RED logo which was changed from this,

to,

I am perfectly fine with the new logo for the title itself.

On which CD PROJEKT RED has shed a little light,
