Heaven Angel
Through a joint collaboration with Wikia, Warner Bros. will offer a custom companion app for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The app is a dedicated hub for all of Wikia's community-curated Shadow of Mordor content, including player-written guides to help with certain missions and background info on characters. While in the app's "reader" mode, users can peruse a wealth of information about the game and the lore surrounding it. More interesting, however, is a secondary sync mode within Palantir. Once initiated, sync mode constantly listens to the game audio coming off your display and automatically retrieves relevant information surrounding protagonist Talion's current going-ons. Information runs the gamut from character biographies to mission walkthroughs and more. An initial version of the app will be available later this month, with limited sync capabilities – not that it's useful unless you're watching a trailer for the game. Wikia and Warner Bros. will offer the app free of charge on iPad, though Wikia isn't opposed to offering Palantir on other platforms down the line.http://www.joystiq.com/2014/01/23/middle-earth-shadow-of-mordors-palantir-app-listens-while-yo/ http://www.blogcdn.com/slideshows/images/slides/216/934/8/S2169348/slug/l/palantir-sync-found-1.jpg/img] __ Warner Bros. shows deep preview of combat in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor The story-based open-world game builds upon the lore that served as the backstory to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but it relies upon brand new characters and settings that weren’t dramatically shown in either the books or the Peter Jackson movies. It’s a big risk in that respect, and one that could pay off handsomely if fans buy into the extension of Tolkien’s fiction. The game is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The player is a Ranger named Talion, who is killed alongside his family and then is returned from the dead by a mysterious “spirit of vengeance,” or a wraith that resembles the Ringwraiths of the trilogy. You make the choices about who you want to go after, how you go after them. It will be different for every player. The game opens as the Black Captains flee Dol Goldur in the forest of Mirkwood, where Gandalf leads an expedition against the sorcerer named the Necromancer (who is really the evil Sauron in disguise). “Like Frodo’s Sting, you can build up your weapon and its legend over time,” de Plater said. “It’s like a gameplay-based crafting system, where your weapon becomes different based on who you go after.” “The story is something that we are really excited about and will dive deeper into it later,” de Plater said. The game’s combat is visceral, earning it a “mature” rating. The weather system varies, with big rainstorms that add a lot of realism and a dark mood to the game. The world will have iconic locations such as the Black Gate, Udun, Mount Doom, and Barad-dûr, the Dark Tower. Peter Jackson’s special effects teams helped with the design of characters and landscapes in the game. “The world is a hellscape,” de Plater said. “It is a mature game, and we wanted it to be visual. Stealth is important in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Sounds great.
spindoctor
This game must have the shortest design document ever. step 1 - copy Assassin's Creed step 2 - copy Batman Arkham Asylum step 3 - that's it.

And how exactly is that a bad thing? If any one copies a excellent product, Gives it it's own identity and flavour I'd say bring it on...it all depends on execution. Example.... see in automobiles, cars like CCX, CCXR and Agera took styling and tech from Ferrari and Engine tuning/ Craziness from Lambo... look at the results. Just saw the gameplay and I must say I am waiting for this game now. Cheers
spindoctor
It's a problem because it highlights just how badly this industry is lacking in creativity. They're not even trying to hide how blatantly they've ripped off those games. So much so that one of the people who worked on AC2 is actually accusing them of using the exact same code/assets. It's also a problem with the direction this industry takes. COD has affected the gameplay systems of most shooters (and many other games) in the last 6 years. Uncharted 2 spawned a stable of clones, some more blatant (Tomb Raider) than others. Some of these might be entertaining but their success reinforces the homogeneity that is engulfing gaming. Also, I see so many complain about how Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed is the same game every year. How can one criticize repetition but be okay with ripoffs? Heaven Angel
Says the guy who buys same crap every year and will end up buying this as well. There is a difference between repetition and ripoff. Nobody likes to pay $60 + $60 for same crap every year (COD and FIFA.) Whereas ripoff is different. Just because the game has same gameplay mechanics, it doesn't make it bad. People copy the good stuff to make it even better. AC is actually POP ripoff. Starbound is Terraria ripoff..etc So it doesn't matter as long people enjoy it. Moving on.
spindoctor
f**k it. nvm. You heard it here first folks. Ripoffs are a good thing.

PS Fan
AC is actually POP ripoff. xvinnix
What's the point? No one is going to change their opinion. Let people play what they enjoy. You are getting my point wrong....... key words are Copy and Execution here, Rip-Off is entirely different stuff. Do one thing... if you like music then check the covers from Boyce Avenue....that is an excellent example of copy but executed very well......and then see the Song titles for these f***** bands like Direction Bieber stuff.....those are rip-offs. Rip-Off is lack of talent whereas copying something and executing something in your own identity sometimes need more talent than creating something original ( Jack Nicholson created the identity of original Joker, Look what heather did to it ) Do we agree anywhere on this? sudarsan
This looks waay better than any AC games, Ac games took platforming to a higher level but it had lot of things that put me off like terrible AI, padded missions, poor stealth and shallow combat. Middle earth Core gameplay is a rip off no doubt about that but the way you approach an objective open up the gameplay to a different level and most importantly the world of middle earth looks lot more intriguing. AC world bores me to tears
KyoyaHibari
we know nothing about gameplay yet, any AC gameplay vids look as good as this. But when you play, then only you realize how bad AI is AC worlds are pretty interesting imo. 3 and 1 was a bit let down because the worlds are empty, but still they look quite good
