It actually depends upon their mood.I have bought Asus laptops ipads together and my carrying bag was marked as X so had to pay customs on that.Sometimes they dont mark X on the baggage so it becomes customs free.Or you can try out your luck by rubbing the x mark on your baggage. LoL

I think it all depends on what you are carrying, if its something small like mobile, camera, handheld gaming device, laptop, watch or jewelry, it is recommended you throw away the packaging and invoice. Also try to carry these things on you rather than keeping them in your suitcase. For example carry the phone in your pocket, wear the jewelry and watch.Keep the camera in a waist pouch, and make sure it has some pics stored in it.

As for big things like game console,e.t.c it all depends on the sole discretion of the custom officer, if he is ready to believe that you carried the console from here to abroad, just for entertainment. It will be hard to make him believe if you are going for a few days. If for a few months, then it will be easier.

Also a lot of times they don't stop you, specially if you are not carrying anything big,and have only one or two suitcase per person. Anything more than this will attract their eye.

And if you are carrying something like lcd or led, then there is no way to avoid customs, as soon as you put the tv on your trolly they will call you for inspection.

In the end it really does not depend on the value of the goods, it depends on how well can you hide them. Even if they stop you there is a high probability that they will ask you for bribe instead of charging you customs, in this case negotiate as much as you can.

Plus I would like to add if you are buying electronics, a lot of countries offer VAT refund, make sure to ask the dealer from where you buy if the item that you have purchased is eligible for this or not, if yes then you will need to carry the invoice.

I need someone to bring me a GTX 680, and a SSD from US. Direct conversion from dollars would make it around 35000. Any chance of getting customs? I guess he can carry the SSD in his handbag, but graphics card may not be small enough to carry in it. Can the things being carried in handbag be sealed?

Last year i bought least 1.5 lac around good for my car, inlcuding alloys, projectors, led tail lamps, K and & in big boxes, suprisingly no one stopped us

I feel indian customs really depends on their mood and maybe somewhat on the timings when your flight lights, they mite be like a little more lazy by 2 - 5am or so??!?!

And a week back i got a sealed mac air, and they took 5k bribe for it since i got it box packed itself (dint want to open it before i reachd home ) and i was just carrying a bag and still was stopped and checked

Take the card out, and keep the box alone after crushing it so it goes right on the bottom of the suitcase, you can reassemble it easily after that.

Yes PS you will have to show the bill, or they will take an approximate value decided by them not the one given by you. I got a music system for my car for shich i did not have the ill, it was 18k, he told me as per indian prices this sells for 40k, so i showed him the invoice after opening my laptop and he let me go after that. Usually if you have sealed boxes or stuff in boxes it is easier to get caught. (I think they run a bar code scanner to check the value of the item in the box). And as people said above carry as much on you and it is totally on there mood.

I still think that 25k limit is kinda retarded in this day and age. Also noticed when I flew in day before (with 2 laptops, 3 phones in my bags and they didn't charge me :giggle: ) that they had a higher limit for value of jewelry worn by women. I call that sexist and discriminatory against men :P They should allow gadgetry worth 1 lakh for geeks then :P

I've done it before with far more valuable stuff from Thailand and Singapore and such (some still boxed like GPUs and Motherboards) and it just depends on your luck (rub that goddamn X mark off and walk through the green channel). Generally take the box off before bringing it in or fold and put away the box in a different part of your luggage (did this with the PS3).

You know a far scarier thing is when I fly back to college in the US with a huge amount of Indian food in my suitcase and this huge black dude goes "Do you have any foodstuff in your luggage?" and you have to go "Nope" confidently and nonchalantly.
