Star Wars Battlefront launches Christmas 2015, EA has announced.

EA boss Andrew Wilson made the announcement during a conference call to investors following the release of the company's Q2 2015 financial results.

This was followed by a tweet from the EA account.

Star Wars Battlefront, which EA said tonight was its "major first-person shooter" for the year, had been expected summer 2015, so it's been pushed back by a few months. But the release window comes as no surprise: The JJ Abrams' directed movie Star Wars: Episode 7 is due out 18th December 2015.

The imagery features a pair of Rebels, a woman with a standard blaster, and a man with a scoped rifle, flanking a pair of Stormtroopers – one with his rifle at the ready, the other priming a Thermal Detonator – as the forest moon of Endor burns in the background.

In the distance, behind the Empire’s AT-ST, we get a glimpse of Ewok villages in the trees, hopefully indicating verticality in DICE’s map design. A defeated AT-ST sits smoking in the woods. Perhaps this suggests destroyed vehicles remain on Star Wars Battlefront’s battlefields.

DICE remains close-guarded with gameplay specifics, but speaking with IGN, Star Wars Battlefront Design Director Niklas Fegraeus explained a bit more of what’s to come when the first-person shooter arrives this fall..

“The scale of our maps and modes offer a great variety” depending on the location, Fegraeus explained. Hoth, where the Rebel Alliance fought off invading AT-ATs in snowy plains, will differ in size than the dense woodland of Endor.

“We have actually made the decision to specifically tailor certain maps to certain game modes,” Fegraeus continued, “and what we get from that is not only incredibly varied scales, but also gameplay that will allow players to live out some of their most memorable Star Wars battle fantasies.”

DICE’s Frostbite Engine brings that to life by way of the studio’s “internally developed photogrammetry systems.” With photogrammetry, developers can use photographed images to achieve an incredible level of detail – we saw this in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, which IGN nominated for Best Graphics in the 2014 Best of Technology category.

“Perhaps the hardest part about bringing the franchise back is managing expectations,” said Fegraeus. “Star Wars fans, including ourselves, are incredibly passionate about the universe. Each of us have our own personal favorites. However, with the talent we have here at DICE, the Frostbite technology at our fingertips, and the fantastic working relationship we have with Lucas, I believe we will deliver a Star Wars experience that excites fans around the world and gives them the chance to play out battles in some of the most iconic locales in the series history.”

Plus, more on map size and DICE's technology.

By Mitch DyerEA and DICE have been quiet about Star Wars Battlefront since E3 2014, when we got our first glimpse of the revival in the Frostbite Engine 3 -- and while it’ll be a bit before we finally see the multiplayer shooter in action, IGN is excited to reveal this gorgeous piece of concept art.

It won’t be long before we see what he’s talking about – DICE is set to reveal Star Wars Battlefront this spring. “We’ve been showing the game to some close partners and one of the things we hear is that it doesn’t feel like other shooters and that it’s fully born from Star Wars. That really strikes a chord with me and the team as that is exactly the emotion and feeling we are going for and we can’t wait to show the world more this spring.”

^ Two posts above you, although Screwey has not put a source (he rarely does), it is mentioned that the scheduled release is Christmas season.

Disney Sets Battlefront in Official Star Wars Timeline

Disney retconned all of the Star Wars extended universe not long after taking the helm of the series, thus wiping the Star Wars slate rather clean outside of George Lucas' films and the films Disney is working on.

As EA's Star Wars Battlefront game is one of the blessed games, Disney has found the good graces to place it in their sanctioned timeline. The game will fall in between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, but it will be sharing the in-between slot with another of Disney's productions.

DICE and EA wrote on official StarWars website: "It has been hard to keep these secrets from the community, but we’re excited to announce that we will be hosting a panel at Celebration on April 17th, kicking off at 10:30AM PT, where we will debut the official reveal trailer for Star Wars Battlefront.

Make it a proper multiplayer game with no unlocking bullshite, no medals popping up on screen, no battle-packs, no skins, no match history, no battlelog, nothing.

Just a proper game where people fight without caring about K/D ratio. You spawn, you fight, you die, you either win or lose. That's it.

Even Hardline was

Stupid game breaking advantage to subscribers

The head start in MP lobbies should be kept apart from these subscriptions

So if I pay N amount extra I'll get 10-12 hrs. head start on others

Tmrw greedy bastards will increase it to 30-40 hrs

Glad this stupid sh*t didn't make it to PS4

Because Xbox people traditionally spread their wallets wide open to be ripped off
