3. Fernando Alonso / McLaren

Lewis Hamilton was comfortably on for a third place finish till his right front tyre got punctured and he was forced to make an emergency pit stop. Luckily he was on for a second pit stop in any case, but driving around half the lap on three tyres robbed him of two places.

Hamilton sets early Monza pace

Tuesday, 28, August, 2007, 18:25

Lewis Hamilton just shaded Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen as McLaren led the way after the first day's testing at Monza.

Despite suffering a CV joint failure in the morning the world championship leader clocked up 53 laps en route to his 1m24.122 fastest lap.

Nick Heidfeld underlined BMW's confidence in its low-downforce configuration as the German lapped less than 0.2s slower than Hamilton.

Jarno Trulli was fourth fastest and described himself happy with his day's work.

“The car has quite a ‘light’ feel at Monza because you run with the bare minimum of aerodynamic downforce because so much of the track is flat-out," he said.

"In general we got through a decent amount of work on the set-up today before the rain came at the end of the day.

"We worked on the tyres and brakes and I was am happy with progress."

The Italian also expressed his approval of the revised safety precautions at the second chicane.

"The second chicane now has a tarmac surface instead of gravel and it is good to see that – a definite step forward,” he said.

Running was cut short as rain fell towards the end of the day, and it remains unclear whether anyone will venture out tomorrow since more is forecast for Wednesday.

Tuesday's times from testing at Monza

Alonso outpaces Lewis in Monza test

44166_1.jpg

Fernando Alonso replaced his team-mate Lewis Hamilton at the top of the time-sheets as the McLaren drivers dominated the second day's testing at Monza.

The British rookie set a time of 1m23.454s before handing the car over to the world champion who lowered the mark to1m23.155s as he set-up planning his own Italian Grand Prix set-up.

Nick Heidfeld wrapped up his pre-Italian Grand Prix with more set-up and tyre evaluation work as he went third fastest, ahead of Jarno Trulli who was fourth for Toyota.

Kimi Raikkonen completed his running for Ferrari in fifth, more than 0.6s slower than his championship rivals. The Finn will hand over to Felipe Massa for what is scheduled to be the final day tomorrow (Thursday).

Raikkonen's compatriot Heikki Kovalainen reported no problems as he took over from Renault test driver Nelson Piquet junior to go sixth fastest.

"We had a good day, and the car got better with every run," he said.

"We worked hard so that by the end of the day, the R27 was well-balanced. I think this will be a good baseline to work from on Friday at the Grand Prix, and at that time, we will focus on fine-tuning the set-up to extract the final tenths of a second for the race."

Sebastien Vettel was an impressive seventh fastest for Scuderia Toro Rosso, ahead of Williams driver Alex Wurz who suffered an unspecified technical problem in the afternoon.

Honda test driver Christian Klien took over from stable-mate James Rossiter to go ninth ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber.

Takuma Sato made a rare testing outing for Super Aguri, while Adrian Sutil was just 0.3s slower than the Japanese in the B-spec Spyker.

Alonso fastest again as rain hits Monza

Thursday, 30, August, 2007, 18:20

World champion Fernando Alonso took advantage of the afternoon’s dry weather running at Monza to top the testing timesheet for the second successive day.

The third day of the test had threatened to be a washout after torrential rain battered the Italian circuit for most of the morning, confining drivers to just a handful of installation laps.

But improving conditions from just after lunchtime gave drivers the chance for some serious running and it was the McLaren driver who set the best time on a 1m23.490s after 51 laps.

The Spaniard’s benchmark effort was a full second clear of second-placed man Robert Kubica, with the Pole concentrating on set-up work on the BMW F1.07.

David Coulthard was a strong third for Red Bull Racing on his first outing of the week, ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and fellow Red Bull stable-mate Tonio Liuzzi in the Toro Rosso.

Honda was half a second off Alonso’s pace courtesy of Jenson Button, while Nico Rosberg was eighth for Williams.

Giancarlo Fisichella, along with Sakon Yamamoto in the B-spec Spyker, registered the most laps during the rain-hit session – 72 – and despite the morning’s weather, was pleased with his work.

“Even though we did less running than planned, I am quite pleased with the day,” he said.

“It was an important test, just one week before my home race, and all the more so because this is a very unusual circuit in terms of the high speeds, and how we use the brakes.

“I ran in wet and dry conditions, and I think we made good progress ahead of next week's race.”

The reigning world champion team will not however be returning to the track on Friday despite the test being extended into a fourth day following the poor weather.

A number of teams are expected to stay on to complete their programmes ahead of next week’s Italian Grand Prix, but Renault has opted to save the testing mileage for later in the season.

Testing times from Monza (Thursday 30th August)

1. ALONSO McLaren 1m23.490s

2. KUBICA BMW 1m24.413s

3. COULTHARD Red Bull 1m24.453s

4. MASSA Ferrari 1m24.525s

5. LIUZZI Toro Rosso 1m24.768s

6. BUTTON Honda 1m24.918s

7. ROSBERG Williams 1m24.983s

8. FISICHELLA Renault 1m25.069s

9. SCHUMACHER Toyota 1m26.175s

10. YAMAMOTO Spyker 1m26.384s

McLaren completes Monza clean sweep

_______________________________________________

44370_1.jpg

McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa completed a clean sweep for the team this week at the top of the Monza testing order on Friday, although it only narrowly edged out title rival Ferrari on the final day.

De la Rosa took over from fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso to complete the extended test session for the team and clocked a best time of 1m23.285, just four thousandths of a second faster than Felipe Massa.

Teams were once again greeted with wet conditions when the session opened on Friday, but the weather improved considerably in the afternoon allowing teams the chance to complete final preparations ahead of next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

And it was de la Rosa who set the pace as McLaren carried out aerodynamic testing, brake selection, set-up and mechanical work specific to both the Monza race and the season's remaining grands prix.

Robert Kubica was 0.3s further back for BMW and completed the Hinwil-based squad’s programme with mechanical set-up, electronic system and tyre comparison work.

Williams’ Nico Rosberg completed 89 laps to set the fourth fastest time, with Ralf Schumacher fifth for Toyota.

“It was a little bit frustrating today and once again we lost the morning to rain,” said Schumacher.

“The track surface was ‘green’ once again and we lost a bit more time in the afternoon when the car stopped due to a small technical issue.

“I was concentrating on mechanical aspects of the set-up but at the end of the day I still felt that we had work to do.

“It was also difficult to make meaningful comparisons at the end of the session when someone lost an engine and oil went down at Turn 1.”

Sixth was taken by Jenson Button, while Toro Rosso’s Tonio Liuzzi was seventh as he completed the team’s pre-Monza aero work and Anthony Davidson eighth for Super Aguri after a mammoth 110 laps.

David Coulthard rounded up the runners in the Red Bull RB3, but despite its final position the team was satisfied with its week’s work.

"This has been a productive test," said its chief test engineer Ian Morgan.

"We have achieved high mileages with a number of components that had durability problems in recent races so we seem to have made progress in that area.

“The aero work has produced some encouraging results and, despite the rain, we managed to get through all our usual pre-race work in preparation for next week's Italian Grand Prix."

Testing times from Monza (Friday 31st August)

1. DE LA ROSA McLaren 1m23.285s

2. MASSA Ferrari 1m23.289s

3. KUBICA BMW 1m23.575s

4. ROSBERG Williams 1m23.962s

5. SCHUMACHER Toyota 1m24.171s

6. BUTTON Honda 1m24.537s

7. LIUZZI Toro Rosso 1m24.760s

8. DAVIDSON Super Aguri 1m24.919s

9. COULTHARD Red Bull 1m25.185s

^^u've been watching formula 1 long enough to know that practice times aren't an indication of qualifying and race performance

peace

Practice times are completely misleading where the lower ring teams are concerned. But among the top two or three teams they are pretty indicative of current levels of competitiveness on a particular track. To top the times on all four consecutive days of testing at any one track is a pretty strong indicator. You may recall that before this season began, Felipe Massa blitzed everybody else at pre-season testing in Bahrain and look at what he achieved there. Obviously it could be that one or more of the teams could be sandbagging. But yesterday's test times have conclusively proved that McLaren have the legs of the Ferrari at Monza, at least in current car configurations. With both teams scheduled to bring new parts over the course of the next seven days in preparation for the race next weekend, the balance could swing the other way. But for now, it is firmly in McLaren's court.

who topped the practice times in turkey and who won the race?

peace

But it wasn't a comprehensive domination like in Monza since the first session went to Ferrari. And the Monza times are test times, not practice times. Practice times are even more misleading because of the different fuel and tyre strategy evaluations that are undertaken in the short practice windows.
