I think even at around 9-10 feet a 50" is perfectly fine especially if you are using it mainly for HD

I have been using a 42" Panasonic plasma for over 2 years now and sit about 10 feet away from the TV. After a couple of weeks you get so used to the size you would want a bigger TV.

I havent had any burn in on my TV yet. There is always mild image retention after playing a game for a few hours, you'd be able to see the HUD on the screen, but that goes away in no time. Hell, in fact i completely forgot to switch my TV off last week and left it on for more than a day, with just the input name on the screen. There was image retention which went away after playing for a few hours. So you dont have to worry about burn in.

There has been no image degradation over the years, and to my eyes the TV still looks brilliant, even though its an older gen one which isnt full HD.
If i were to buy a TV today, id get another plasma.

Didn't CRTs also have ghosting? And they had the best blacks. Shame about the resolution.

Well, CRTs could have pulled off high def. They arent fixed resolution panels in any case.
The main issue was the form factor, they could never be as thin as LCDs, plasmas. That and the fact that a slimmer profile with a widescreen aspect ratio apparently caused geometry issues.

^^ yea. i normally sit at 9-10 feet and i have a 42. my room is quite wide though so there is no cramped feeling. infact i feel i cuda gone for a bigger one. but then 46 as a size is not common and 50 wuda been overkill. not to mention outta my budget :saberfite:

Same here. I've got a 40 inch LCD at 10ft and I so wish I'd gone for 46 inches.

the first high def TV (IIRC) was the sony wega which was essentially a high def CRT. it weighed in at about a 100 pounds. the pic quality of that set could still destroy most sets today.
