As first revealed at last month's Tokyo Game Show, the sequel is titled Shirokishi Monogatari: Hikari to Yami no Kakusei. The name can be translated, unofficially, as White Knight Chronicles: Awakening of Light and Darkness.

The story of White Knight 2 follows the events of the original. Main character Leonard has formed a contract with one of five giant knights. As part of his battle with the Wizard people who aimed to gather all the knights, Leonard and his allies unlocked the secrets of the Dogma War, a great war that took place 10,000 years before.

This new chapter in the White Knight Chronicles saga promises to expand in scale to the whole of the land. Things kick off with the City of Greed, the Kingdom of Barandel, and the Magic Republic of Foria all facing various problems.

You'll once again create your own avatar character who will accompany Leonard on his adventure and will also serve as your online persona when you play the game's network mode. Your avatar character will play a greater role in the story this time around.

Screens highlighting the avatar part of the game hint at some major additions for the sequel. There are a few shots showing your character transforming; something along this line was mentioned in past Famitsu interview stories, but Sony has not provided details.

The first White Knight Chronicles featured four giant knights: Leonard's White Knight, the Black Knight, the Dragon Knight, and the Sun King. White Knight 2 adds one more, "Tsukihime," or "Moon Princess." She's the only female knight in the bunch, and with her bow and arrow, she emphasizes long distance attacks. Her allegiance is unknown at present.

The game's combat system promises to retain the basics of the first White Knight, while adding new skills and readjusting the balance of current skills. The individual roles for your party members will be more greatly emphasized.

Sony didn't specifically mention this, but screenshots suggest that your battle party can now include six members.

Sony and Level-5 also shared screens and artwork of the new areas, monsters and equipment we can expect for the sequel. Of these, it provided details only on the new "Forest of Mystery" area. This area is a holy forest which surrounds Foria. It has been protected since ancient times by four forest gods who control the seasons.

First game came disappointing for most due to its faulty gameplay mechanics and focus on multiplayer. They still got the chance to turn this one to something great, hope level 5 pulls it off!

Same here, I don't think anyone in IVG has played WKC yet thanks to its perfect release date. :threatenlumber:

I was this close to picking it up but then I thought of my backlog + other upcoming RPGs... FFXIII and Resonance Of Fate and kept it back.

I hope they polish up the game to a large extent. WKC had some brilliant ideas marred by shoddy execution. cant say I am thrilled about online as it means upgrading my firmware and risk losing my PS3.

For starters:

- Have separate currency for combos and Knight transformations

- Make the damage proprtional to the amount of mana spent. No sense in having a 4 mana attack do 300 damage and a 22 mana attack do 375 damage.

- Make materials for synthesis more easily avilable and not only through the quests

WKC2 BD to include WKC1 with upgraded graphics and game play mechanics. :fear:

Pretty surprising news, and since most of the complaints about the first were regarding unbalanced gameplay and stats, this could mean we might get two good jrpgs. Also glad that I didn't play WKC, will have to wait for the Japanese release and confirm this first now.

thats pretty amazing, read it a few weeks back on andriasang, good that famitsu confirmed it. looks like Hino wants to make amends after the critical panning WKC got in most parts, mainly due to the weak SP mode, a lot of content was cut from the game to make way for the christmas release

White Knight Chronicles 2 (8/9/8/8, 33 points): Level-5's latest online-compatible RPG may not have a release date outside of Japan yet, but the game's done and is receiving pretty decent reviews over there.

As Famitsu's reviewers pointed out, this sequel doesn't rock the boat, but does improve upon the original game pretty drastically. "Weapon abilites are made much more clear, which enhances the strategic element of the game," one wrote. "You can take NPCs with you on quests and do knight transforms with avatars, which is nice. There are some annoying parts, like how you can't adjust your allies' tactics in much detail, but I'm glad to see controls on things like the map display and chat made a lot better."

"There are some pretty dramatic improvements from the previous game, especially in the battle system," another added. "Even with all the new features and strategy, the battles proceed at a quick pace and are much easier to follow."

A third reviewer didn't have much good to say about the story: "The two-part story has a ton of volume, but does have a very heavy fetch-quest feel to it. I wish there was some more variety to the quests you receive, too."

The title is in Japanese since no western release has been announced (IIRC). It is basically White Knight Chronicles 2 even though they left out the '2' from the title for the Japanese release.

I got that it's in Japanese.. still confusing that they need so many words to say "White Knight Chronicles"
