How to connect PS3 to your laptop wirelessly

For those of us who've been going nuts trying to connect PS3 over ad-hoc network to our laptops and use internet sharing, here's the big news:

PS3 does not support ad-hoc. And you'll find tons of methods online which show you how to, but none of them work. In fact, short of buying a wireless router/switch/ADSL Modem, there's no way you are gonna connect your PS3 to your laptop... until now.

Before you read on: This works only with Windows 7. Because Windows 7 implements something called Wireless LAN miniport

And a bunch of people created this software called Connectify to turn your Windows 7 lappy into a Hotspot. So here goes:

1. Download Connectify. Note: The latest version does not support UPnP. So unless you want the latest bells and whistles, I suggest you download the earlier version 1.2

2. Install it on your laptop

3. The first time run will show an easy configuration wizard. Generally, you only need to put in the name of your new "Hotspot n/w" and the password. The rest is automatic. You should also select which Internet Connection to share. Usually it would be your wired LAN.

4. Fire up your PS3. Select "Settings" and then "Network Settings" from your PlayStation 3's main menu. Select the "Internet Connection Settings" option.

5a. Select "Easy" > "Wireless" > "Scan". Select your network. Enter your password.

5a. For "Proxy" choose "Disabled". For "UPnP" choose "Enabled".

5a. You should now run the Test to see if you are able to connect. At minimum, you should get the IP address. If not (timed out error), see below.

5b. Select "Custom">"Wireless">"Scan". Select your network. Enter your password.

5b. For IP Configuration, select "Manual" and enter an IP which is assigned by the Connectify client (in my case, the Connectify "virtual router" took the IP 192.168.2.1. So I used 192.168.2.2)

5b. Subnet: 255.255.255.0

5b. Gateway: Either the "virtual router" IP (for me, 192.168.2.1) or your ADSL modem (for me, 192.168.1.1)

5b. DNS: I used my ADSL Modem IP. But it may be different for you. In which case, check out your LAN properties to find out what to enter here.

5b. For "Proxy" choose "Disabled". For "UPnP" choose "Enabled".

5b. Run "Test". By this time you should be able to get your IP address at least. If not, -> :nerves:

6. If your internet connection test fails or if you are not able to sign in to PSN, I'd suggest disabling your firewall.

7. Enjoy

peace of mind vs headache?

not really. once its configured, u can have Connectify run @ startup and ur lappy will be a Hotspot everytime.

Just need to configure Firewall to allow PS3 connection thru. And works equally well for Wi-Fi cellphones.

Just a poor mans router

hmmm... dunno why u guys think its a headache.

I was planning to buy a wireless router/modem but after this, I've realised I dont need one. I connect my cell, PS3 and my other laptops with my "Hotspot" very easily. Thats a Rs1K saving for me. Actually Rs1.6K since thats what a wireless modem costs here.

but why should i have my PC running also when i have a standalone thing to do my work :D

but anyway good it works for you :D

u r not getting the point... but nvr mind. posted it for some chap who'll eventually come here and put up a post "hey guys. i dont have a wireless modem and i was wondering if any of you can help me connect my PS3 over ad-hoc so I can share my internet connection"

btw, I was about a minute away from posting that query before I stumbled on this rather obscure solution.

Get an android phone and use wi-fi tether if we are talking about alternate solutions of ps3 connecting to the net.

Best option is to connect both (ps3 and laptop) to internet via same router and install ps3 media server on laptop. Then you can access all the files on laptop via ur ps3.

Yeah.. It is the simplest way..

Just download PS3 Media Server.. Drag drop the files you want to share via laptop and just access it on your ps3.. I can do it using my BSNL wifi modem..
