dullu
"Bungie community director Brian Jarrard – who has been involved in development of at least four Halo projects over eight years – says that Microsoft deserves respect for the careful way it manages its studios." Source But one line that stood personally for me was this: ”The way that we build games, the way that the team works, means that being in that oppressive Microsoft office was not conducive to the type of work that we do. I do believe that we felt like we wouldn’t be able to do good work there – maybe we would have died a little bit inside had we not been set free into our own studio.”

Bulovski
MS had some great studios. They retained the ones which said wouldn't make any games.
HundredProofSam
Rather, they retained the ones that didn't have the option to leave peace
dullu
Infact, in contrary to what the headline says; the rest of the article simply has Jarrard speaking about how difficult it is in general to work at M$; and how they were treated king size and given their own private office where M$ scum was not allowed @Sam: yep; and they closed down an awesome studio like Ensemble and retained Rare
HundredProofSam
Rare can be a great developer if given to the freedom to make the game they want to. I doubt the core team from a few years ago is even there anymore. peace
Aftrunner
Rare are dead. They are a far cry from a team that almost single handedly made the N64. Edit Ensemble closing down was more Ensemble's fault than MS. Their own guys said the studio was a mess from the inside.
devil_angel
Couldn't they have meant....."the way they manage their (2nd party) studios" or something??
HundredProofSam
They had Epic, who're now with EA They had Bizarre, who're now owned by Activision They had Bioware, who're now owned by EA So not the ideal track record for second party either. peace
devil_angel
what about Lionhead and Turn 10? They're still with them right?
Sapola
being in that oppressive Microsoft office was not conducive to the type of work that we do Says the guy who is going to start working with Activision, he is gonna learn real meaning of this word in no time. But seems a lot of things in the later part of the interview are very contradictory to what the most of the article suggests. He commends MS for being supportive, helping Bungie becoming a better studio and nurturing them, then suddenly drops the bomb. The reason for separating from MS seems, them feeling more insecure than anything, it is to the point of them building straw houses in the fear of a big bad wolf. OK so you avoided getting eaten up by MS, and then walked right into the lion's den, genius.

Karooo
TSays the guy who is going to start working with Activision, he is gonna learn real meaning of this word in no time. They own the IP so don't think there will be much pressure, COD is like bread and butter to Activision and they need to churn one out every year. Different scenarios both.
