Platform:- Pc and Mac

Release Date:-Valve time (late 2012)

As expected, Valve has just announced Dota 2 – that's capital D, lower-cased ota – its "massive sequel for one of the most played games in the world." There aren't many details in the short press release found after the break, save for its platforms -- Mac and PC -- and its release window of 2011.

The title, which eschews the original's acronymic camel-casing ("DotA"), also avoids any mention of the actual original game's title, which is "Defense of the Ancients." Earlier this year, Valve filed a trademark application for the DotA trademark which led one of the game's original creators, Steve "Pendragon" Mescon -- now working on DotA-esque League of Legends at Riot Games -- to tell Joystiq that he was "surprised that [Valve has] decided to try to trademark the DotA name, because it goes against what [he] and others believe DotA means to the community."

Riot Games even counter-filed for the DotA trademark, pledging "to protect the work that [original DotA creator] Eul, Guinsoo and dozens of other modders have done to create the game," adding, "if we were to obtain the trademark, we would keep the game and the DotA name freely available to the mod community."

Valve's newly announced Dota 2 will bring back all of the WarCraft 3 mod's hundred-plus heroes, and bring some new social features in as well. A writeup over at Game Informer says that Valve is updating its Steamworks system specifically for the game, and in addition to including in-game features like the ability to point out and recommend certain strategies and items for beginning players, veterans will get rewarded for helping outside of the game as well, by writing and editing strategy guides and tips. There will also be an in-game coaching system available with voice chat and screen sharing, all designed to help a wider audience adapt to the hardcore world of "action RTS" gameplay.

As for gameplay, there will be still only one map to play on, though there will be different match types available, some added after launch. "Denying" is in -- DoTA remake League of Legends decided not to include the controversial mechanic in its gameplay, but Valve's version will let you kill your own creeps to prevent the enemy from getting XP. And AI bots will be available, but not for a full singleplayer experience, just to fill in when human players drop out or aren't around.

Graphics will of course be updated -- GI says Valve has "a sizable art team" working on the game, and there are other design tweaks as well, like the environments getting the saturation tuned down so players can focus on the gameplay. Characters will have all new voicework, too, and not just toss out one-liners in certain situations, but sometimes even interact when they have a past with one of their teammates or opponents (we already know who one of those voices will be). And Valve promises the game will get the same community support as its other titles like Team Fortress 2, including possibly more hat-related shenanigans.

It all sounds quite fun. Too bad we have to wait until 2011 to actually sit in Ventrilo Valve's own voice chat, and play Dota.

I never played this but just one map? Is this supposed to be a budget release or bundled with Portal 2 or something?

DotA was initially just a custom map for Warcraft 3 - it became so popular that it attained mod status with years of updates and changes.

millions of people play that 1 map over and over even today - so i dont think 1 map is any limitation - there are over a hundred heroes with different spells and abilities and thats where the replayability lies - as well as in the competitiveness of the game.

this is certainly an important release for valve , they are even reworking a lot of things in steamworks to work well with Dota 2.

but the price may be kept low - along with micro-transactions or something.

maybe even free to play to increase steam userbase (although thats highly unlikely)

if it was bundled with portal 2 that would be awesome - because a lot of people want to try this anyway.

ps - for any conspiracy theorists here - you might want to read up on this blog that popped up yesterday - truth about icefrog

Dota 2 is an upcoming action fantasy strategy video game, developed by Valve Corporation. It is the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Defense of the Ancients mod independently developed for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The game currently has a tentative release of late 2011. The game's lead designer is the longest-serving and current developer of Defense of the Ancients, IceFrog, who continues to maintain his public anonymity, even while leading a development team at Valve. The game will be released by Valve, through both retail and Steam, for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Dota 2 marks Valve's first fantasy video game and first Action RTS game.

Platform: PC

Developer: Valve

Publisher: Valve

Designer: IceFrog ( Developer of Original Dota Mod of Warcraft 3 )

Engine: Source Engine

Genre: Action RTS

Gameplay (Source: Wikipedia)

Much like the original Defense of the Ancients title, Dota 2 combines the real-time strategy element of traditional perspective projection, while also incorporating the leveling and itemization system of a role playing game. Players assume the role of a unit categorized as a "hero", which can be leveled up to a maximum level of 25. The basic setup of Dota 2 places two strongholds with "ancients" at opposing ends of an evenly-balanced map with multiple connecting regions identified as "lanes", in which enemy units primarily traverse, while also combating powerful defensive towers along the way. Players are split into two teams, ideally in a five-on-five format, to compete as the primary defenders for each ancient.

The overall objective of each game is to battle through the opposing force's defenses, in order to arrive at and destroy the opponents' ancient. The towers and stronghold defenses are invulnerable to attacks so long as the farther distanced towers still stand. Periodically, groups of weaker infantry units commonly called "creeps" are spawned, which move along their lane until they reach an enemy unit or structure, which they will then attack.

Defeating enemy forces grants a distributed amount of currency of gold to the offending team, with the greater portion being retained by the player who made the final blow. While also gaining gold, the players will gain experience as well, which accumulates to gain higher levels. The greatest proportion of gold and experience comes from destroying higher priority forces, such as enemy heroes and towers.

Dota 2 will utilize Valve's Steam software in order to provide social and community functionality for the game. Steam accounts will save personal files and settings on the online accounts using the Steam Cloud. Dota 2 will also feature free-camera live spectating, in tradition of competitive Valve titles. The game host has the option to fill open slots with AI bots. Another option allows the host to determine if AI bots or other human players will be used to fill the vacated slot of a disconnected player. Valve is introducing a coaching system to allow for more experienced players to tutor new players.

As the sequel to Defense of the Ancients, the development cycle of Dota 2 has been concentrated primarily upon fully transferring the aspects of its predecessor to the Source engine, as well as building upon the core gameplay. In the debut Q&A, IceFrog stated that Dota 2 will serve as the long-term continuation of the game, building upon the original gameplay without making too many significant core changes that might change the overall experience. Dota 2 will also remain completely based around instant action multiplayer activity, excluding a single-player campaign, but retaining a strong lore tied into the gameplay, including individual hero back-stories and vocal interactions in-game.
