Title announced today at Square Enix presentation in Japan.

The team responsible for XIII is at the helm, including director Motomu Toriyama. It features a new character as well as XIII protagonist Lightning.

"Final Fantasy XIII-2 is currently in production with an aim for producing high quality game content which exceeds Final Fantasy XIII in every aspect; namely, a brand-new story which stems from the previous title as well as a battle system which has evolved further since XIII – and more," reads the press release.

"We will be disclosing further details about the new game in the future."

Official Statement

Following the official announcement at a press event this morning, Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix Interactive Entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, has confirmed Final Fantasy XIII-2 for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. A sequel to Final Fantasy XIII originally released in Europe in March 2010 that has since shipped a cumulative total of six million units worldwide, Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be available late in 2012.

According to Square Enix; “Final Fantasy XIII-2 is currently in production with an aim for producing high quality game content which exceeds Final Fantasy XIII in every aspect; Electronic Theatre Imagenamely, a brand-new story which stems from the previous title as well as a battle system which has evolved further since "XIII" - and more. We will be disclosing further details about the new game in the future.”

From the release of the first Final Fantasy in 1987, this unique RPG series has continued to offer the industry's most advanced graphics, highly imaginative worlds and rich stories as it gains the highest accolades from users around the world. I have a feeling all the stuff that got left out of FFXIII proper will find its way here which would explain the speedy turn around time.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Coming Winter 2011 In Europe

Square Enix has just confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII-2, which was just announced during Square Enix's "Square Enix 1st Production Dept. Premier" event, will be releasing during Winter 2011 in Europe.

During the event, it was merely put down as a 2011 release, and that was for Japanese territories, so this is certainly great news for Final Fantasy fans.

The sequel will follow the story of Final Fantasy XIII protagonist, Lightning, and the initial trailer showed her in new armour as she squared off against a new purple-haired antagonist.
