Software giant looking for hardware engineers to work on console "from conception through implementation"; one position mentions "future platforms."
http://www.gamespot....ws/6302784.html

Historically, a console life cycle has usually lasted about five to six years. So, with the Xbox 360 getting set to celebrate its sixth birthday this November, it shouldn't be a surprise that Microsoft is laying the groundwork for its next move in the gaming hardware market.

According to several job postings on LinkedIn, Microsoft is forming a team "responsible for defining and delivering next generation console architectures from conception through implementation." Currently, the company's Interactive Entertainment Business is hiring an Audio/Video Hardware Architect, Audio Architect, and a Graphics Architect for positions with descriptions that contain the aforementioned language.

Another position, for Wireless DV Engineer, will play "a key role in the development and verification of the Xbox and future platforms." (Emphasis added.) The Xbox division is also hiring a Design Verification Engineer and a Senior Hardware Verification Engineer.

Microsoft's original Xbox model came out in November 2005 and was beset with hardware failures that ended up costing the company in excess of $1 billion due to warranty extensions. The problems were largely remedied with newer chipsets, with the whole console undergoing a redesign that resulted in 2010's slimline Xbox 360 S. That model is the one currently on the market in both 4GB and 250GB configurations.

Gaming Hardware I own: AMD Phenom II 1055T | GIGABYTE 880M D2H | CM Hyper TX3 EVOMSI R9 280 GAMING 3 GB DDR5| Seagate Barracuda 1 TB | Corsair 8 GB 1600 Mhz | Corsair CX 500 V2| CM Elite 371| HP DV6 1211AX| PS1| PS2| PSP| PS3| Xbox 360| PS4| Xbox One

This gen seems to be going on and on and on with no end in sight. We havent even heard of the next gen consoles yet and it will take them a year or so to get them out once they are announced. :(

Perhaps the world is not made. Perhaps nothing is made. A clock without a craftsman. It's too late. Always has been, always will be.....too late.

really? this gen still seems like it hasen't hit it's stride :fear: but that could be just me.....Could we just consider games like UC2 and Gears 2, coupled with a KZ and a few more shooters as the pinnacle? If yes, then this gen is :(

@arch: it should be Sony....they were the real ones to taste the bitter feeling of being late. Nintendo will obviously introduce something jazzy enough for the public to lap it up

That's a good thing. The longer the life cycle, the more money everyone makes, and the less we have to pay for hardware.

Microsoft better be hiring a good hardware QA team to make sure they don't put out crap hardware.

Don't think so.

360 slim 250gb will hit 150/200$, PS3 will hit 200/250$ soon. So that will increase the install base of both consoles by 40 million or so, then they will announce the next gen consoles.

Nintendo will announce it next year, they will pimp 3DS this year, so yeah ...

^ I believe M$ would play the PS2/PS3 scenario with the xbox360/successor. They can always lower the price and at $150 the 360 will make a fantastic buy. In the meantime they can always roll out a new console. They really need to. The 360 is getting whacked in a corner when it comes to good games now :(

Oh yeah where would we be without all those sequels that have 3 at the end of them and look pretty much exactly similar to their prequels with maybe one or two added effects and absolutely no changes in core gameplay.

That alone makes extending this gen for another 3-4 years worth it. If we are lucky we can have Gears/UC/whatever number 4 and 5 and maybe even 6 this gen itself on the same engine.

O.o

And as far as developers making money is concerned you make it sound like everyone was losing money up until the last 2 years. I am sure they will do fine. Its not like this is the first time new consoles are coming out. Its been the same for 25 years.

New hardware means devs spend a lot of time and money developing engines and other tech to develop for that hardware. Lets not forget all the crap games that come out in the first couple of years in most console life cycles. Gears of War was the Xbox 360's first killer app and it came 1.5 years after the console launched. As the specs get higher, that number of crap games earlier on is only going to go up.

And what makes you think launch titles for the next Xbox won't be Gears, Halo and Forza? New hardware doesn't mean new game IP. Or is just the same games with better graphics enough to justify a new console?

WHOA ! you got to play castlevania....that game is superbly presented in both art form and graphics wise...if developers churn out lazy sequels with just one added effect it is not the hardware fault.....also look at ff13...it looked spectacular......they come under pressure to release game soon to meet markets demands instead of working more on it taking their time.....new hardware also wont make much difference if the developers have same attitude....

Yeah..as many have said, the longer a gen lasts the better it is for everybody. I believe we still haven't seen the best this gen has to offer.

On another note..a small insignificant nitpic; this November it would the 360's sixth anniversary, not birthday.

They have to meet market/publisher demands. That is largely how the gaming industry works. Very few devs have a staunch support to say "When it's done" instead of a release date. Look at IW :fear: It is probably less about the attitude of the devs themselves

Uhhh yes. Thats the whole purpose of having new hardware. O.o

And FWIW Gears might have been the first big new exclusive IP but by that time we had already had GRAW, CoD2, Oblivion 4, Rainbow six, PGR 3, Splinter cell DA, FNR3 etc.

Games ranging from good to amazing in the first year itself.

The next gen needs the following - two new IPs which are brilliant to look at and supports stunning 3D, Kinect enabled shooting, Halo multiplayer rip off, and a bunch of third party developers who can give 10 sequels the following year.

And who made those tags for this topic?

I will get there

Kameo was a launch game and it was also pretty good. Also, Gears released about 11 months after the console launch, not 1.5 years.

so its that attitude only...that hampers the development process and quality suffers....we all know games that have taken there own time and all usually come out great....even with new hardware if it trend continues ....after just few amazing games everything will start looking similar with one or two added effects on them....asking for new hardware so soon is not gonna help anyone.

Honestly imagine a proper Crysis sequel that isnt gimped by hardware. Imagine BF3 getting the same visuals on consoles as a top end PC. Imagine it not being limited to 24 players while the PC version gets 64. And imagine more games following that example. Imagine Witcher 2 running on a console looking like what we have seen. Go look at that UE 3.whatever video from GDC and imagine the NEXT version of that engine running a game on the consoles. Or the Cryengine 3 screenshots which could be a game running real time.

How can you look at that and say no thanks, I will stick with my usual sequel thats indistinguishable from the prequel. FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS! Its insanity.

Exactly at the one who said Imagine BF3,That proves it all. if the current generation consoles can still make the customers fap then why a new console? The current generation still have got a very high potentional in it,They just dont know how to use it..

As for microsoft,They just dont have First parties. They should buy some of them instead of making a new console,X360 is a very powerful console they just need to use it.. If BF3 can why can't others?
Edit - Also the games of this generation when we switched into this from PS2,It made us fap badly also have high concern of the games being in HD which compiles 50% reason of why we fapped,i wont be surprised if the games of the next generation console for the first 1 year sucks

WTF no MGS 4?
yeah.

as above

Once upon a time, a woman was picking up firewood. She came upon a poisonous snake frozen in the snow. She took the snake home and nursed it back to health. One day the snake bit her on the cheek. As she lay dying, she asked the snake,
"Why have you done this to me?" ....and the snake answered,
"Look bitch, you knew I was a snake.
