The burn in effect is almost non-existent on modern phones.

okay. i am not even sure if it helps or not.....whatever i hear read sounds kinda myth only....it may be that the user gets use to that sound and start liking it...but headphoen startingf to sound great after hours of use...not sure

burn in depends on the HP, it isn't limited to just iem's but any audio instrument for that matter.

and it's a very subjective thing, the sound change in most cases is nominal at best, there are other factors that come into account which people confuse with burn-in

Burn in is very real and affects all your senses, but your hearing and smell senses are more prominently affected (ask a perfume specialist). I know my Klipsch S4i's sound totally different now than they did when I bought them about a year ago, but the other Sony surround headphones are just about same. Maybe cause in surround headphones the sound is so dynamic you never actually get used to them.

Burn in is nothing but the way your brain changes the interpretation of a signal that you keep bombarding it for a longer time. Stronger the initial signal, higher the change you'll experience. This is why you should never buy perfume after just one single sniff, let it linger around for few minutes and you'll get a different scent after that. This change is usually permanent, burnt into your brain, hence the word.
