Leo82
Hey Guys, I am planning to buy the PS certified Xperia Play from an UK online vendor. They confirmed that they can ship to India, but when asked about custom duties, they said they weren't sure.... Can u guys let me know if custom duty would be attracted for this shipment? If so approx. howmuch? Thanks!
playstationdude
Yes i think a mobile will definitely attract customs duty.I think its about 14%, not 100% sure I would recommend you not to import a mobile phone via courier as the Indian customs is notorious for raping the packages. Rest is up to you.
Leo82
Oh ok! By 'raping' u mean they would damage the package?
nameless
Looks like Custom Duties on mobile phone is 5%. You can use SnS for getting it shipped to India. Might be safer that way. Refer to this thread SnS.

Leo82
Sorry for being a noob, but if I get it shipped to a friend in UK, who 'rapes' the package and sends it to me in India as a used one, will there still be custom hassles? Also @nameless SnS looks interesting... is there a chance that I can directly give their address in India for shipment so that they can handle the customs? (cos the vendor is willing to ship to India, where as providing a UK address will attract UK VAT)

Buzz
so are you rally going to take the custom department to court if they charge 5%, this is India son SnS people are quite good with their job PAPA
avkash
I will not joke on the PAPA answer, but it can get really murky, avoid it with other people, they may not care so much for your sentiments, assuming you can understand what could have the reply been Also, SnS DOES NOT include or pay customs, it is charged once the item reaches to you

Leo82
cpl of guys hav pmed me abt the details of the deal, for the benefit of anybody else who might be interested, I am posting it here too I used http://www.unlocked-mobiles.com/ Its a UK based service. Xperia Play is cheap here, but you may check the models of other prices. They order the Play at the end of the week u had paid in. Dont worry, I found them to be trustworthy. I came to know abt them by an article in Pocketgamer. Before placing the order I registered myself in ShopnShip to get the phone from UK to India. The life term membership costs u $45, but ask them for a promo code on their twitter (link's provided on their website). With promo code, u will pay just $5 for life time membership Once u get registered on SnS, they'll giv you a UK address and how to use the address. Go to unlockedmobiles, order the phone (PLS MAKE A NOTE OF TRANSACTION ID), and send the invoice details to SnS The tricky part (wont be tricky for u as u'll be aware of it now ) - Since unlocked mobiles will see that the address u provided is of a freight forwarder, they will ask you for an ID proof. I provided them with a scan of my passport. They'll ask u for some merchant code, which I found is native to UK, to identify your payment. Hence I provided them with a snapshot of the online bank statement with the TX ID. Then, once the above are approved, U need to wait for the shipment to arrive at unlockedmobiles. My order was delayed further by another week due to huge order backlog they had. U can talk to their customer care in case of follow up. They were friendly Then, the products gets shipped to the UK address within a cpl of days. From Aramax SnS ships to India and you are provided the tracking details. The package was under 500gms. Hence, as per their rates, had to pay around $10 for shipping costs Additional Rs.400 was paid on delivery for the custom charges
