Background Story

When a catastrophic accident on the Moon fills near-Earth space with debris, the survivors must fight or face death in the cold of space.

Man is back on the Moon but greed soon leads to a catastrophic accident, when an explosion fills near-Earth space with debris. Survivors on the Moon are forced into conflict with those trapped on the battered International Space Station. Control of limited supplies means the difference between survival and death.

Man is back on the Moon and the companies that took him there are reaping huge profits. Their greed soon leads to the largest mining accident in history, when an explosion throws billions of tons of rocky debris into near-Earth space. Fragments of the Moon settle around the Earth and become known as the Arc.

With Earth surrounded by debris there's little chance of rescue or return. Survivors on the Moon are forced into conflict with those trapped on the battered International Space Station. Control of the Arc means the difference between survival and death in the cold of space.

Background Story

Man is back on the Moon and the companies that took him there are reaping huge profits. Their greed soon leads to the largest mining accident in history, when overexploitation of a risky new technique called Incite Mining leads to a catastrophe of unprecedented scale. An explosion throws billions of tons of rocky debris into near-Earth space, its aftershocks threatening to tear apart the Moon itself.

Fragments of the Moon settle around the Earth and become known as the Arc, named after the dramatic shape they draw across the night sky. With Earth surrounded by debris there's little chance of rescue or return for the thousands of people stranded in space.

The International Space Agency's astronauts and scientists trapped in the battered International Space Station are given the task of apprehending those responsible for the catastrophe. Weapons are among the last supplies sent to the station before the supply route from Earth is cut.

The Moon Mining Cooperative finds itself facing serious charges after only barely surviving the cataclysm. Cut off from Earth, they see independence and self-sufficiency as their only possible future and the ISA as a threat to their existence.

The two sides are drawn into an armed conflict. Desperate battles are fought over strategic locations and the scant supplies from Earth that make it through the shroud of debris. Control of the Arc now means the difference between survival and death in the cold of space.

Firing Squad has reviewed the game .. 85/100

Pros:

Graphics are pushing the envelope. The cold and lonely reaches of space don’t lend themselves to a particularly exciting environment, but technically, things look great. The warm glow of the sun cast upon hundreds of rocks is particularly captivating.

Innovative gameplay. An original game like this is a rarity. Even more unlikely would be something like it coming from a big name like EA or Ubisoft. You have to give Futuremark Games Studio props for their ambition.

Simple controls make the game easy to get into. You don’t even need to use more than WASD and the mouse until you’re comfortable with putting around that way.

Universal stat-tracking. With statistics and rankings tied to your SteamID, you can check them out on the website and see where you stack up on the leaderboards.

Exclusive to the PC. It sucks that this is considered a pro nowadays… But it gives you a better interface, full support for dedicated servers

, free downloadable content updates in the future, and a very strong possibility of a map-maker or other mod tools being released.

Cons:

Steep system requirements. I suppose it’s to be expected of a company famous for being on the cutting edge of tech demos. Still, you’ll need a beefy rig to run this game, and if you’re on XP or have a DX9 video card, you’re SOL.

Little weapon variety. FGS emphasizes that they wanted to make winning or losing dependent on your skill, not your equipment loadout. However, this puts more of the tactical burden on the player, and some people aren’t that creative and/or don’t want the responsibility. Maybe they just didn’t want to have to balance several different weapons…

Zero-G can make you ill. After playing for a while, even someone who’s not usually prone to motion sickness can feel a bit woozy. Take regular breaks, but if you’re the type that gets sick from regular FPS games, don’t even bother.

FiringSquad says:

Combat in zero gravity is an interesting idea, most certainly due to the tactical possibilities opened up by the complete freedom of movement. But beware, the 360-degree battlefield can be very disorienting, and often you’ll be ambushed with no clue as to where the fire is coming from. Even with the directional damage indicator, you’ll have a tough time finding the enemy before you die. Learn to be a bit more thoughtful and deliberate in your approach, though, and your K/D ratio will improve.

It’s very admirable for Futuremark to make an exclusively PC game that is DX10 only, to boot, but I’m not quite sold on the longevity of the zero-G concept. It’s a new and exciting spin on the competitive FPS genre, but I don’t think it will keep me away from games like Borderlands or Dragon Age for long. Though at $20, it’s a good value, especially if they keep their promise of continued content updates. If you’re a longtime fan of Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, or others and have the power under the hood

to run it, you’ll find a lot to like in Shattered Horizon.

^^ Even if you have 8800 series card and 3gig of ram it will look great and churn out a steady 30 FPS and it will look better then most of current gen games.

I have preordered the game and it got unlocked yesterday but I have put it to download only this morning so will post some impressions and screens as soon as I reach home .

a friend of mine could not max out the game at 1680x1050 with all settings high and 4x aa. and he has a heavily overclocked quad, an overclocked gtx260 and 8 gigs of ram. this game eats hardware for breakfast :P. having said that, he also mentioned that the visuals were nowhere near as good as the performance it was demanding.

Ok I played like 3hrs, here are my first impressions of the game-

I can say my decision of ditching Modern Warfare 2 and picking this one for MP was not wrong. This game perfectly delivers what i expected a Zero-g FPS to be. Despite its premise its a very accessible game ,a true zero-gee sim would have been impossible to play as every shot fired would have propelled you backward and every shot fired from hip would have sent a player spinning.'SH' balances this feel of Zero-g and vacuum with accessible gameplay , (i got a hang of the controls within first game and but i would suggest a you to try the controls on an empty or practice server ).

Its a mp only game and you spawn as an astronaut of one of the two warring factions , you are wearing a high tech spacesuit which while turned on simulates the gunfire and other ambient sounds and also prevents you from being propelled backward while firing, it comes with a jetpack which can accelerate you for brief bursts. You can power down the suit too , and when you turn off the suit, you disappear from radar of other players and everything goes silent and only thing that can be heard is your heartbeat and muffled sound of your gun, this tactic when used properly can make life hell for campers.Only disadvantage of turning it off is the hud disappears and you can only aim through ironsights and you get propelled backwards whenever you fire a shot.

There is only one gun in the game and every one has same one ... but its a swiss army knife of a gun.. normally it works as assault rifle but click middle mouse and look down the scope and it will start firing sniper slugs .The gun also comes fitted with a bayonet for melee which can kill in one hit by ripping open enemy's space suit and a granade launcher for .. well ! throwing granades .Granade launcher can cycle through three types of granades , ICE , EMP and MFR. ICE is like a smoke granade good for taking cover , EMP forcibly shutsdown the suit of enemy player turning them into a sitting Duck, and MFR nade has push back effect which is good for throwing other players into deep space.

The game depends a lot on teamwork , going solo more than often results into a cutscene of a corpse with punctured spacesuit spinning away into deep space.Because of the versatility of the weapon you can switch from one role to another .. just by a button press.

Also ,unlike *cough* IW *cough* the game has got dedicated servers and soon dedicated server will be released for players to download and host servers for their locales.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate it 8/10 .Anyone looking forward to a unique MP experience (different from the cookie cutter online FPS MP that we have got used to) and has a rig to handle it ,should buy it .
