NO don't go to 3-1LOL what a pushover the giant spider turned out to be. The Tower knight was a nightmarish motherf**ker. This one died with almost zero effort or strategy. Hell forget the Tower Knight I had a harder time with those flame chucking fatsos in 2-1 than I did with the 201 boss. At least they managed to kill me a couple of times, the spider went down in my first try and I only had to heal twice.
Still I aint complaining. I will take an easy boss any day.
So now, should I do 3-1 first for 4-1? Which is better for a melee character?
NO NO NO
Save it for last
go to 2-2 & 2-3

Tried 4-1 but the skeletons keep stunning me. My shield is sorta puny.

Too late. Already in 3-1.
Tried 4-1 but the skeletons keep stunning me. My shield is sorta puny.
Don't block the skeletons, doge or parry. Actually the 4-1 is the first level I went to after 1-1 because the area lets you level up insanely fast once you learn to parry.

If you haven't been using this till now then the game should get significantly easier for you. I had moved out of 1-1 only after mastering parry on the weak monsters there and it lets you take out enemies in one hit that are otherwise much tougher to handle.
Don't parry. It requires a lot of practice. If you miss, which you will; you're dead. Just hit and run.
I have to disagree, I spent some 30-60 minutes practicing it and was hardly missing anything after that (except some fast ones). Anyway killing an enemy with a parry + riposte is extremely satisfying, I don't see much point in playing DS as a melee if you are going to rely on hit and run all the time.

Also the level design in 3-1 is terrible. Everything looks the same.

And there is nothing like walking towards the middle of a large group of monsters and taking them out with a chain riposte. Nothing else in DS felt as rewarding.
The game does not restrict you to a particular style anyway, so whatever feels right for you.

Those fat guys are a pain in the a*s. Dont bother blocking. Lock on to them and strafe. Most times you can find them in a doorway so you can use the side areas to hide, hit them, hide again. Or if you meet one in the open, strafe from mid range and wait till they cast, move in quickly and hit them, move back again and strafe again.
2-1 is actually easier than 1-2. After that though, its a PITA.
Check the Demons souls wiki. It helped me out a hell of a lot.
This is my design.

even with theif ring not able to give them backstab, being too close is also sucking up huge health, only option for me is to use soul arrows

which weapon are you using? Ge the crescent falchion from 4-1 and try to upgrade it if you have the materials to do so. It does good magic damage and is pretty useful early on.
What kind of character are you trying to build? melee || magic || ranged || etc...
3-1 is easy if you take it slowly. Wait for those medusa heads to turn around and then run behind them and R1 R1 R1. Hopefully, if your weapon is reasonable, they will be dead before they ring your death bell.

The worst generic enemies are:
Giants in the swamp
Invisible assassins in 4-2
Assassins in the palace
I will get there
