IGN preview

SCEA finally pulled the cover off the hood and gave us our first look at GT5 during its press conference this year. The trailer opens with what is almost certainly a CG intro of a pit crew working on a car that then speeds down a couple highways, but it quickly changes to in-engine footage of vehicles tearing up some concrete.

The camera pans by a few buildings at points, all of which look to be located in London (the final shot is a giveaway). Store fronts are covered with signs, ads and so forth, giving them a hint of life. Windows reflect the sky and glow bright white as the sun blankets them with rays.

On the track, the camera hovers on a red Ferrari F430 drives for a few seconds before the Italian car speeds past. The camera then fades out and in above an Audi R8, giving us a nice view of the engine through its long rear window. Next a field of a half-dozen cars or so, including an F430, the R8, a Mercedes, Dodge Viper and TVR compete vie for position around a corner. Lastly, we're left with a shot of a parked Type-R concept sitting in downtown London.

While the trailer didn't give us many details about content, it did show us how phenomenal the lighting engine looks these days. Reflections and specular lighting roll off the vehicles naturally, while shadows dance in and out of the car in each of their tiny crevices. Gran Turismo HD looked good, but this blows it out of the water.

While the trailer is certainly indicative of what Gran Turismo 5 in full will look like, it was actually set up to tease Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, the prequel of sorts that will give gamers a sizeable taste of the full Gran Turismo experience. There's no word of when this will be available or even in what form, though we'd throw down a few chips that it'll be a PlayStation Network download.

10.08.07 - The “Best Car” magazine led an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi of Polyphony digital, which works on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue:

- Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3) is to appear in Japan - as announced - in October 2007. Yamauchi says that the distribution is to statfinden still before the Tokyo engine show, which begins to 26.10.07.

- The main part Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) is to appear approximately around July 2007 in Japan.

- Gran Tursimo mobile (PSP) is to be published only after Gran Turismo 5 (PS3).

Think GT5 is still awhiles off? Quit your thinking, it's not good for you. Stick to listening. Listen to Kazunori Yamauchi, for example, who reckons the game will be out in Japan by next summer. Around July-ish. Which if precedent is anything to go by (and it normally is, that's why they call it precedent), we can expect an American release by next Christmas and a PAL release in...what, 2009? And that's if everything goes according to plan. Which, it being Gran Turismo, it probably won't.

Graphics are going to be stunning as usual, but I hope they add damage this time. I really hated that in Gran Turismo 4 as well as the fact that the AI cars would follow their own line, regardless of where my car was. These 2 basically killed GT4 for me. TOCA Race Driver 3 was much better than GT4 IMO. I just don't get why can't they add damage?

@abhishek, the game never had damage physics due to licensing issues. No manufacturer wants their flagship models to look banged up and dented after each race.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue To Feature Car Damage, Improved AI, Better Physics

We just had a chance to sit down with Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi to not only watch the Polyphony Digital president play some expert-level Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, but catch up on how the teaser version of Gran Turismo 5 will play. The early taste of the first proper PLAYSTATION 3 release will feature a number of firsts, including online play, damage effects for cars, and fully modeled interiors.

We spent a good portion of our session going through Prologue's "My Page" features. Most of it is rather self explanatory—Options, Home integration, Garage—but Polyphony touched briefly on the TV functions. The developers plans to show videos of non-game content, including (potentially) real life races, television shows, and "how to" clips created by Polyphony themselves. The My Page Profile aspect was pitched as very straightforward, containing information about the user's personality, but we weren't shown what it actually looks like.

Kaz seemed pretty proud of his latest car museum disguised as a PlayStation game, giving us ample eyeball time with the lovingly crafted car models. He showed us details on a 2006 Ferrari F430, making sure we didn't miss the stitched leather details to our left. Yes, Kaz, very pretty. Players will be able to inspect Polyphony's hard work even during races, as the GT driving wheel will let drivers pan left and right, an option supposedly not available with the SIXAXIS controller.

We also got a bird's eye view of the Lotus Elise convertible from the same model year which he took out for a spin on the familiar Suzuka Circuit. This probably won't come as a surprise, but Kaz was pretty good at playing Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The one curiosity I noticed was that he steered with the D-pad, not the analog stick. He told me to chalk it up to habit, having learned how to play his own game on the original PlayStation, before the controller became the analog stick-equipped DualShock.

Hardcore racer will be pleased to learn that GT5 Prologue will also add a new level of mastery for expert drivers, with a Professional driving physics option. Apparently, fan requests for a more intense driving experience led to the change.

Also at the behest of fans is a working damage model, one of unspecified depth. We didn't see Kaz run into anything during our session, so it was hard to tell if the game features the system in place yet. When asked about the new built-from-the-ground-up AI code and the option for car damage, Yamauchi indicated that CPU controlled drivers are aware of the new penalties for playing "bumper cars." With up to sixteen cars on the track, they need to be aware of each and the danger of spinning out when one comes in contact with another.

Yamauchi says these changes will lead to fewer cars lining up as they had in previous Gran Turismo games.

Apparently, with GT5 Prologue being built on a car and component basis, virtual racers will be given a better perspective on how their changes in hardware will affect cars from a performance basis and how they'll look when decked out. After learning this, I asked Yamauchi if the new guys at PD are stuck building just components, like aftermarket wheels and bonnets. No, he said, but that is one of the tests when someone comes on at the developer. Get your tire models right, then you can move on to cars.

Yamauchi also confirmed, via his translator Tsubasa Inaba, that a new force feedback wheel is being developed specifically for the release of the game. The Polyphony Digital staff declined to give us additional details on what changes we could expect, but I think we can safely assume that they're not adding motion control.

The bad news? A North American release has not yet been confirmed. The Europeans and Japanese will get their driving gloves on the game this year, but Yamauchi asked us to solicit fan feedback. They said they'll be evaluating fan interest to see if a US and Canada version makes sense.

You know what to do. If you want it, say so.

rofl Forza ?? it had some 200+ cars compared to GT4's 700+. So it is very much possible some odd car manufacturers didn't want damage and they can't put it for some cars and not for others, that would look stupid. Otherwise, if Polyphony could make a game run in 1080i on PS2, they could've easily done damage physics.

I read this on some forum very long ago. In GT 5, when u buy the game, u get only very few cars, and you need to buy other cars online from PSN store paying extra, is this still true ?

Yeah, considering what Poly Digi said about the data size of each car and thats why BluRay was the only way to go, it would take days to download GT 5 Prologue if it had anything over 100 cars.

ya, paying extra for cars is pathetic, its like robbing u in broad daylight, pay $60 for the game and pay $5-$10 for every subset of cars....it would've set a bad precedent for games to come. Then we would see like - main mission for $60, $5 for every additional mission  !
