SCEA finally pulled the cover off the hood and gave us our first look at GT5 during its press conference this year. The trailer opens with what is almost certainly a CG intro of a pit crew working on a car that then speeds down a couple highways, but it quickly changes to in-engine footage of vehicles tearing up some concrete.
The camera pans by a few buildings at points, all of which look to be located in London (the final shot is a giveaway). Store fronts are covered with signs, ads and so forth, giving them a hint of life. Windows reflect the sky and glow bright white as the sun blankets them with rays.
On the track, the camera hovers on a red Ferrari F430 drives for a few seconds before the Italian car speeds past. The camera then fades out and in above an Audi R8, giving us a nice view of the engine through its long rear window. Next a field of a half-dozen cars or so, including an F430, the R8, a Mercedes, Dodge Viper and TVR compete vie for position around a corner. Lastly, we're left with a shot of a parked Type-R concept sitting in downtown London.
While the trailer didn't give us many details about content, it did show us how phenomenal the lighting engine looks these days. Reflections and specular lighting roll off the vehicles naturally, while shadows dance in and out of the car in each of their tiny crevices. Gran Turismo HD looked good, but this blows it out of the water.
While the trailer is certainly indicative of what Gran Turismo 5 in full will look like, it was actually set up to tease Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, the prequel of sorts that will give gamers a sizeable taste of the full Gran Turismo experience. There's no word of when this will be available or even in what form, though we'd throw down a few chips that it'll be a PlayStation Network download.
