LittleBigPlanet

Developer:Media Molecule

Publisher:Sony

Genre:Platform,Creativity,Toy

Players:1-4,Online

Platform:PS3

Release:Q1 2008

Media Molecule, the makers of the wildly addictive Rag Doll Kung Fu, now brings its talents to PlayStation 3. Given the cheeky working title The Next Big Thing™, LittleBigPlanet is a game that is also a game making studio.

The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character's powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community. Creativity is part of the gameplay experience and playing is part of the creative experience. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like. When it's ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet community to come and explore their patch -- or can go and explore everybody else's.

e've seen 2008's LittleBigPlanet before (enjoying it every step of the way), but never had the chance to try out its "Pop It" creation feature. For the unfamiliar, "Pop It" is the same cool-looking menu system that we've seen demoed a million times before but weren't allowed to touch. Now that we have, however, we definitely like it.

How does the creation system work? ...Pretty easily actually. Once a player has decided to manufacture something, they simply need to tap a button and bring up the onscreen menu. Once the HUD is active, users can then scroll through a series of material and item types and pick the things they want to work with. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of pieces to scroll through but they're themed to the selected backdrop. So in the E3 demo, for example, there was a blank white slate, a graveyard, the area from GDC, a desert, and a cool-looking garden.

Once players have selected their background and item types, the creation process begins. Each object is entirely physics-based too; so if a ball falls from the sky and lands on a hardwood floor then it will react just as it should (as will all objects). Once users have chosen what they need (no word yet on whether or not there's a limit to how many pieces can be inserted into a level), they can further customize them by adding stickers, changing their position, or erasing parts of these objects entirely. Players can even put items together to create new working contraptions -- cars, carts, you name it. Oh, and yes -- it's as cool as it sounds.

The best thing about this entire process, though, is that you can build entire worlds populated with funny gadgets and obstacles in minutes. LittleBigPlanet is one of those rare examples of finding something that really is limited only by your imagination. Expect plenty of awards for this one in '08.

Mario, Katamari possible in LittleBigPlanet'

Remember those old concept pics showing Mario, Master Chief and Katamari Damacy in LittleBigPlanet? Well it looks like it's entirely possible to have them in the final game yourself.

"That was just early concept art," creative director Mark Healey informed CVG, "but you can customise your character so much that that's entirely possible." Our LBP character's going to have a nice set of Master Chief armour then...

Healey says that because you can pimp out your character with "stickers" imported from the PS2 hard drive, a character in Mario or Katamari gear is fairly straight forward to put together.

Will this sort of content wind Sony into trouble? Healey says the company is going to rely mostly on the game's community to moderate dodgy content. "It's hugely important," he said, "the first thing I'd do is make a big c*ck and publish it, but clearly we can't allow that." No we can't, Mark.

Look out for the full interview and our updated impressions of this truly mind-blowing game shortly.

Littlebigplanet demo not coming out this year. :cry5:

"I can officially confirm that there won't be a demo this year," Ron Eagle, senior manager of PR for Sony Computer Entertainment America told me. But he did say he's played 30 of the games 50 planned developer-made levels and that it's a lot of fun. He seemed genuinely pleased about his time with the game, but his company won't be showing more "LBP" at least until next month. Eagle could only add that the full game is set for a 2008 release."
