  1. Here are some alternative SaaS platforms:

    Vanilla: https://vanillaforums.com/features/forums/

    Discourse (open source): https://www.discourse.org/features

    IPB's SaaS platform: https://invisioncommunity.com/buy

Tribe is great but too expensive ($500 per month)

Or we could move to a traditional forum software like phpBB which is free and self-hosted. Many other forums use it. Only issue is that it looks even more dated than IPB.

What would be the most straightforward conversion tier for us? I guess that would also be dictated by where most of the cost is going currently. I'll be happy to explore alternatives as well!

The lowest tier should be fine for us. Migration cost is $250, but waived off if we pay for the full year up front. But I'm a bit concerned about getting stuck with a 1 yr commitment if their servers are sluggish and they aren't able to optimise performance.

Would everyone be okay with having these forums as read-only and switching to an entirely platform from scratch?

  3. I've been trying to find a solution to it, but the forums have become so bloated over the last 10+ years, there doesn't seem like much can be done, short of dumping it and starting from scratch.

Even our AWS billing is through the roof (35k per month) because the forums have become so unoptimised that its taxing the server.

The forums software company (Invision) has a service where we can move the forums to their own server but they can't guarantee that it will run any smoother.

  4. Hey guys,

I don't think we already have a thread about this so I thought it might help, especially given the global scenario we're in.

I also thought of starting this thread because an ex-colleague is working on a story around how online gaming and gaming communities have helped people deal with mental health issues, and also helped people make friends.

There's a lot of evidence out there that gaming can help people dealing with conditions like anxiety, depression and autism. I personally know a couple of people who, through IVG and the people they met here, were able to over come their mental health troubles. So it would be great to hear some stories of how gaming has helped you or someone you know. You don't have to if its too personal, but sharing your story might help someone else. :)

Sharing below a message from Anu, who is looking for inputs for her story:

I am an independent journalist based in Mumbai and I've written for Huffington Post, India Today, Scroll, Mumbai Mirror, National Geographic Traveller and so on. Please find more information about me and my work here: anuprabhakar.contently.com.

I am now hoping to write an article on how the gaming community can be a source of support and comfort for those battling anxiety, depression and other mental health issues in India, where seeking help for mental health is still largely considered taboo (although things are changing, slowly). I am looking for people who have made friends through gaming - I believe multiplayer games are very popular for this reason as well - and think of the gaming community as a safe space where they can share their struggles. I would love to get in touch with gamers who would like to participate in my article and share their story. Members can remain anonymous in the article. My email id is anuprabhakar2016@gmail.com. If this article interests you at all, please do reach out and I would love to take this forward. Thank you.

IVG Community Showcase: November - Win Cyberpunk 2077

After three months of the IVG Showcase packed with great entries from the IVG Community, we’re now at the final month of the showcase. And as promised, the IVG member with the winning entry this month will win what is possibly this year’s most anticipated release.

In case you’re new to the IVG Community Showcase, here’s a recap:

The IVG Community Showcase is a way for us to highlight – and reward – some of the coolest gameplay moments from the IVG community, whether it’s a great kill streak, a speed run, some skilled stealth gameplay or an amazing goal. Regardless of which games you play, and which platform you game on, you can be part of the IVG Community Showcase. Once you’ve got a great gameplay clip you’d like to share, here’s how you can participate:

    • Upload the clip to a social media platform of your choosing. Make sure you tag/mention IVG in the post.
    • Post a link to your clip in this thread

    Win Cyberpunk 2077

As we did with Marvel’s Avengers, and Watch Dogs Legion this month’s winner will also win a high-profile new release. For month four, we’re giving away Cyberpunk 2077. The winner will be able to choose the platform of their choice: PC, PS4 or Xbox One. The game will also be eligible for a free upgrade to next-gen consoles in 2021.

    Picking a winner

Once the last date for entries has passed, the IVG team will shortlist the best clips. We will then create a poll and invite the community to vote on their favourite clip. The clip with the most votes will be selected as the winner.

    The Rules

While you’re welcome to share any and every cool gameplay clip of yours with the community, here are some rules to keep in mind to be eligible to win a prize:

    • You have to be residing in India
    • You must be a member of the IVG forums to be able share your clips. It's free and easy to sign up and there's plenty in store for gamers, from discussing your favourite games to great deals on preowned games and consoles
    • You must tag or mention IVG in your social media post containing your gameplay clip. That way we know it was intended as an entry into the IVG Community Showcase
    • The social media post and clip should be no older than one month from the date of posting it on the IVG forums.
    • Prize on chosen platform will be subject to stock availability
    • Campaigning for votes is not allowed. If there is any suspicion of rigging the polls, the concerned entry will be disqualified and its votes will be nullified.

Last date for entries: November 22

Another event full week in gaming, both in India and globally, and we're here to talk about it all in episode 54 of the IVG Podcast.

Before we get to the topics for this week, we’d like to give a big shout out to AMD for hooking us up with the PC gaming rig that we’ll be using for streams and reviews going forward on IVG. Here’s a quick round up of this week's episode:

    • Updates on month 3 of the IVG Showcase and our FIFA 20 Farewell Cup
    • What Microsoft’s $7.5 billion power move means for Bethesda’s franchises, Game Pass, Xbox console sales and PlayStation gamers
    • Xbox Series X preorders sold out within minutes in India but you might still be able to get one
    • Does Microsoft’s push towards Game Pass endanger single-player games?
    • Sony India remains silent on PS5 launch plans, and retailers aren’t helping matters either
    • Amazon Luna and what it’s doing differently from its potential game streaming rivals
    • Our impressions on Mafia Definition Edition, PES 2021, Serious Sam 4 and The Division 2's new Summit mode

  11. Since both PS4 and Xbox One had abysmal support for wireless headsets, I've been reading up on whether PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will have better support for third party headsets. And the good news is that seems that they will.

Both consoles will support 2.4 GHz wireless as well as Bluetooth 5. The problem is PS5 and Xbox One X will use different tech so the same headset won't work wirelessly with both PS5 and Xbox Series X. So if you have both consoles, you either buy two headsets, or buy one for your preferred console and use it on the other one via 3.5mm headphone jack.

The one headset that really stood out for me in terms of features is the Audeze Penrose.

    https://www.audeze.com/products/penrose-wireless-planar-magnetic-headset

It has a PS5 version which also supports PS4 (Penrose) and it has an Xbox Series X|S version that also works with Xbox One (Penrose X). I believe both will also work with PC and Switch.

It's not out yet, but it's up for preorder on Headphone Zone for 25k :panic:. The really cool thing about it is that it can connect via 2.4 wireless and BT at the same time. So you could connect to PS5 over 2.4 wireless and you can at the same time connect to your phone via BT for Discord voice chat.

The PS5 and XSX variants are identical, except for the USB dongle because because they both use slightly different tech. I'm hoping you can buy a dongle for the other one separately, but I doubt it.

Another option (which I haven't read up on a lot) is the Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless. This is also an expensive option.

I'm guessing the most affordable will be the Sony Pulse 3D headset. Hoping for it to be about 10k in India.

If you guys come across other good options - wired of wireless - please share

IVG FIFA 20 FAREWELL CUP: RULES & REGULATIONS

    1. General

1.1 Each participant must be aware of all the rules listed below. Insufficient knowledge of the rules cannot be used as an excuse for breaking the rules.

1.2 Teams should be submitted before the start of the tournament kick-off date. Teams cannot be changed after the tournament has started.

1.3 Matches need to be completed within the days mentioned for each round. Contact your opponent via PM on IVG to set a date and time.

1.4 Players are required to play with the PSN ID they have specified at the time of registration.

1.5 Every player is responsible for his own connection and has to have a good internet connection to avoid possible ‘lag’. We have heard from multiple members that whoever is hosting has an advantage. Everyone will be playing a home and away match and hopefully this will minimize the lag handicap.

1.6 In case of a serious lag issue – quit the game within the first 15 mins of the game and report  to the organizers. Save a video of the gameplay to back the claim.

1.7 We encourage and appreciate if everyone can save their games using the PS4’s Share button and upload it to YouTube. We did not have this option during last generation, and we are excited to watch some great games.

    2. Specific game settings FIFA

    2.1 General:

    • Settings: Standard settings
    • Match duration: 12 minutes (6 minutes per half)
    • Game speed: Normal

2.2 All matches should be played in ‘Friendly Match’ mode

2.3 All matches have to be played with the online squads.

2.4 Only tactical defense is allowed.

2.5 When the connection is lost, the match will be resumed at the remaining time and the current score. In scenarios like these, extra time is always counted as +5 mins to the remaining time.

    2.6 KO stage:

    • All rounds in the knock-out stage will be Best of Two.
    • Everyone plays a Home and an Away match with the away goals rule being active.
    • When you are the home team, you invite the opponent to the match and vice versa.
    • In case of the aggregate score being a tie at the end of the second match (including the away goals), there will be a new match at a neutral venue with Golden Goal. (The first team that scores, wins the match)
    • Golden goal game: Select a neutral venue for the golden goal game. If there was no lag issue in the previous two games - the one who hosted first game can host the golden goal game in a neutral venue. If either player had lag, Organizers will randomly select the host.

2.7 Players are allowed to play with club and national teams. Adidas All Star XI and MLS All Star XI are not allowed.

2.8 It is NOT allowed to change your team during the tournament. The team you choose for your first match has to be used throughout the tournament.

    3. Reporting scores

3.1 Both players must posts the score after finishing the game in the tournament thread.

3.2 The total score of a match must be reported by both players.

3.3 Both players need to report the scores on the same day after the end of the match.

    4. Behavior rules

Play Fair and be nice to your fellow IVG members. Bad language and/or threats against the players are not tolerated.

  16. IVG Podcast 51: PUBG ban, Avengers letdowns, Ubi Forward expectations, RTX 30

But that’s only part of what we have in store in this extended edition of the IVG Podcast, where one lucky listener also has a chance to win a cool Marvel’s Avengers Steelbook.
