If you haven't purchased GTA IV yet, then do yourself a favor and dont watch too many gameplay videos or read too many reviews, it'll just hype up this game to a point where you'll be kind of disappointed. I wouldn't rate it as a 10/10 but it definately deserves around a 9.
The game is gorgeous (360 version, havent played the PS3), I'm sorry sam, I have to disagree but just the shear scale of things and the painstaking attention to details in the environment sets this apart from most games out today. Just little things like driving under a bridge and having small patches of light bathe your car, or the slight fog that accompanies a rain storm, or even just a blotch of blood that stains the side of the screen as you kill someone just immerses you in this amazing gameworld.
A large number of missions are a bit dissapointing. I havent gone too far into the game so ignore this if im speaking a load of bull, but it seems that most the missions ive done so far...are just drive here and kill this just in different varriations, there is of course extremely clever missions such as
The mission where you must kill this individual in hiding, except the only way he'll come out of hiding is if you date him...so you set up an account on a dating site and etc. etc.
. More missions like this would have been great, but alas...maybe DLC? However the dialouge is great, Niko is a genuinely funny guy who's dialogue isnt too cheesy to class him under comic relief. Bruice has to be my favorite character so far, he has this dane cook sort of feel about him and Just talking to him is entertaining within itself.
The Driving is actually, pretty cool, I cant drive for my life in video games, but there's just something about going really quickly, slamming the breaks and doing a 180 that just sets this apart from the other GTAs. Although the driving does need getting used to, when you do, you'll definately love driving.
My Biggest quirp in this game is the police... Nothing is wrong with the AI...it's just escaping from a 4 star wanted level or whatnot is laughably easy to the point where you just have to groan everytime you lose your star level. Dane cook remarked about this a while ago in one of his stand up routines, and this game does it more than any of the others. I cant remember his exact routine but it was something like:
"I love Grand theft auto. If you commit a crime all you have to do is crouch and hide behind a dumpster...for like 30 seconds and the police will call off their search, they'll just be like "f**k it, he's probably in mexico by now" "
Ack! Where are the epic police chases, hiding, fighting off police from your safe house, driving in a gunned down car looking for a pay 'n' spray. Makes me a little nostalgic y'know?
My NAT is strict so i have nothing on MP.
And I have a little question for those of you who have played this for a bit...but for the radio stations such as "PLR" that have talkshows...do they ever get new dialogue? For some reason the only show that seems to be on is the one on "HMO's and the health industry."
