If by data science you mean running ML models, then it might not be the right time for M1 Macs yet. The native M1 support for ML libraries and some core apps (e.g. anaconda) is still sparse. So, if you do decide to go for M1s, be ready for teething issues or end up using Rosetta /  Parallels.

Yeah, I mean ML and AI models.

I know Native support isn't there yet but you can bypass it by getting Xcode directly, installing Homebrew and then Miniforge (community driven-conda). You can get support on arm64 then.

It's not ideal but gets the job done. No need for Rosetta/Parallels.

That being said, I don't like MacOS. Even small things like pulling up two folders to drag and drop as compared to right click and cut/control+X, just irks me. And many more.

Lack of good shortcuts in MS excel.

Windows is just more productive for me.

No for battery life. Infact I wouldn't recommend Dell at all. I'm using a Lattitude for work, and it's battery is also not so great. Has micro stutters with MXM3. Exceptionally bad audio.

Aah, great. These suckers need to do better and catch up to Apple.

Mac is literally what you want

On the windows side look for Lenovo Thinkpad T series or X1 Carbon series, Dell XPS or Latitude 7000 series, and HP EliteBook( they probably have some ultrabook equivalent also )

All these are business grade laptops so you have like 3 years warranty standard.

XPS seems good. I don't want to go with HP.

    Will look at T/X1.

Mac with Parallels, running Windows. :P

Tbh, if you need good camera for video calls, nothing beats the Mac.

What internals are you looking for ? There are decent options on Intel side with good battery. AMD ones available in India tend to gave a dedicated GFX card, eating up battery life.

I'm using LG Gram since my primary use case wasn't heavy, rather downloads, some calls, media playback etc, and it lasts for a good 8-9 hours.

I am leaning towards Intel too as the support for most data science libraries is solid.

Having a dedicated GPU wouldn't be bad though in case I need to handle some large datasets but will be very minimal.

I was looking at XPS and something from Asus.

  5. Need to invest in a great laptop.

Use case: Research, lot of video calls, presentations and data science projects.

Won't game much but decent battery and good internals.

I know Mac fits the bill but I don't like MacOS and just more comfortable with Windows.

    Need good speakers and trackpad.

16" preferred, else 14" is fine too.

Budget is flexible but ready to spend if I can get good value for it.

    Not too heavy.

    Please suggest.

That just means the pay range in your new role was same as your old role. Makes sense to have the same pay. Don't wanna pay more to a new guy than existing employees working in the same role.

That is how things work in an ideal world. Not the real world.

Companies will happily pay more to a new employee as compared to an existing one because expect less people to switch and new employees are bar raisers. It's a cost saving mechanism.

And no, it wasn't about the same pay range. It was about trying to get the same person for the same pay but handling him more responsibilities.

I was checking with soptloss and target price for GNFC shares :P

Fundamental investor here. Happy to hold stock in red if the business keeps performing.

    No stoploss and targets.

All I can say is that I will be happy to add GNFC at 500 and hold for next 5 years. But fully expecting to dip below that too.

If you're joining a decent MNC or a big listed Co. the salary is completely dependent on the position at least from what I know. What you can actually negotiate is the level you join at and maybe some joining bonus. At least from what I know. I know multiple people who have been able to negotiate 70-100%+ hikes on previous CTC so I feel the past CTC thing doesn't really hold these days.

Holds a lot of weight in Finance.

Holds true for tech too but getting better.

This practice of asking of last CTC, payslips of prev company should change in India (will never happen in reality though).

Ofcourse they can demand it to cross check if we really have correct employment history but they use this to low bal offers.

Sooner or later ,the person who joins the company  will find out that he is making less and will jump ship.

    Shittiest practice ever, man.

Most recruiters will ask for it before even talking about the overall job.

Was going through bunch of interviews recently and everyone asked me the same.

For some I gave a ballpark number and for others I just said that X is the market value etc etc.

I have been particularly lucky and have been able to negotiate but some of friends where quoted downright insulting offers after getting through all rounds.

Ex: Friend was earning X and was offered X, lol.

He then said he got offer from Amazon for X+0.15X and then was told to take it or leave it. After he left it, they came back with X+0.25X, which given the current market is still not that amazing.

While one of friends got into Google and the recruiter was amazing. Gave market value from the get go plus hike from the get go.

A good way to circumvent it is by saying you have a sizable year end component and hence it won't be visible in previous paychecks.

Congrats what does that mean in layman terms what opportunities and salary you can get?

    No guarantee, no salary.

It just opens the door for equity and asset management jobs.

MBA still is the best way to get into this space. CFA just sets you apart because of the growing competition.

I am registered for CFA L1 and I am looking to get it before my MBA.

Your ctc will be decided from your other qualifications, skills and most importantly, your last CTC.

Somehow had opposite experience with their in store shopping. Last time I went inside a Croma store was in 2018, to buy a C8, and they didn't even bother attending for 10-15 mins. Just gave up and went to RD, who were excellent in offers, and sealed the deal with them.

    Never bothered with Croma since.

    I have experienced this too.

Was clearly interested in C9 but they didn't bother to attend. However, things were opposite in another store.

I think these guys know that they can't beat prices of RD or Vijay Sales and hence, don't even try.

    Absolutely cracking results by GNFC.

Something to look forward to tomorrow given Laurus will fall, especially with the F&O entry.

    GNFC does it once again.

Market will soon realise its value.

Gonna try to nab more on Monday.

I need to get mom a Sim for 1-2 days for travelling to Australia. Which network (Airtel or Jio )would be more economical so that she can make calls within that country.

In my experience, almost every Indian operator charges just about the same. And the service can be really dodgy while being expensive.

I would suggest to get a local sim on arrival from the airport. Much better prices even for international calls and data. It's instantly activated.

Getting my cousin to buy FB, Amazon, Nvidia and Netflix - all looking like good buy for the monthly investment right?

    Looks good to me.

But then again, you never know when Amazon or Google or Apple ends up eating FB's core business or if Netflix can get the growth back.

Lot of optionalities in the business but depends on execution.

So your cousin needs to do his due diligence.

  15. Core business made $33B last quarter as compared to $27B in Q4FY20 and $21B in Q4FY19.

Meta trading at <20x FCF, that is insane.

Especially with over $10B put behind R&D.

I would seriously put 5% of my PF behind Meta if it were simpler.

Margin of safety is too good.
